It lists 18 questions for renewal applicants taking the first section of the adult test form. These figures come from an older DMV evaluation, so check the current instructions for your application: a renewal may have an alternative to testing or may not require a written test.
Question count depends on your age and application
The California Department of Motor Vehicles’ Class C Written Knowledge Test Evaluation gives these counts for the forms it evaluated:
| Applicant and test purpose | Questions |
|---|---|
| Original license, age 18 or older | 36 |
| Original license, under 18 | 46 |
| Renewal applicant taking the evaluated adult-form segment | 18 |
The report is older and describes specific test forms and procedures. It is the clearest official source for these counts, but it does not establish that every applicant today will take that exact form. Check the instructions attached to your application before relying on a count.
Do renewal applicants always take a written test?
No. The current California Driver’s Handbook says eLearning may be available as an alternative during renewal. The DMV has also announced that some drivers age 70 and older with clean records do not need a written knowledge test when renewing. Renewal requirements depend on the applicant and the DMV’s current instructions, so check the options for your own renewal rather than assuming the 18-question segment applies.

How to prepare
Study the California Driver’s Handbook
The DMV says test questions are taken from the handbook and recommends reviewing it over several days. Use the official California Driver’s Handbook as your main study reference.
Use official sample tests
The DMV provides sample knowledge tests for regular Class C, motorcycle, and commercial applicants. The DMV periodically adds questions to its samples. They are practice material, not a promise that every question on your live test will be identical.

Attempts and test-day rules
The current handbook says original driver-license applicants have three attempts to pass before they must reapply. Applicants under 18 must wait seven days to retake a failed knowledge test; the day they fail does not count toward the wait. The handbook also prohibits testing aids such as a handbook or phone during the test. Review the current DMV handbook instructions for the full process.
