How Far Can an Electric Car Go at 70 MPH?

A steady 70-mph drive can produce very different range from one EV to another. Independent tests show why model, test endpoint and trip conditions matter.

There is no single 70-mph range for every electric car: the model, configuration and trip conditions matter. In MotorTrend’s 2023 constant-speed tests, a 2023 Lucid Air Pure RWD covered 330 miles and a 2022 Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor covered 258 miles. Those results used 95% of a full charge, so they are test measurements—not guarantees that any EV will travel that far before stopping.

What does “before it stops” mean?

At a steady 70 mph, range is the distance an EV covers before it reaches the test’s chosen endpoint. That endpoint matters. MotorTrend reported its results after using 95% of a full charge, while Consumer Reports described a separate highway-only test in which 22 popular EVs were driven at a steady 70 mph until each was inoperable. The two outlets’ figures therefore should not be treated as directly comparable.

Neither result promises how far a particular car will go on your trip. The exact vehicle, battery condition, weather, route and amount of charge you plan to use all affect the answer.

What have independent 70-mph tests found?

MotorTrend’s 2023 Road-Trip Range test covered 44 electric cars, trucks and SUVs. It used a constant 70-mph out-and-back route intended to minimize elevation and wind effects, and reported distance using 95% of a full charge. The outlet published the results in 2024.

Vehicle as tested Reported 70-mph distance
2023 Lucid Air Pure RWD 330 miles
2022 Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance 330 miles
2022 BMW iX xDrive50 312 miles
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Long Range RWD 291 miles
2022 Kia EV6 Wind AWD 260 miles
2022 Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor 258 miles

These are historical test examples, not a ranking of current EVs. MotorTrend found that some vehicles came close to their EPA combined range, while others fell substantially short; the EPA label and the outlet’s 70-mph procedure measure range differently. A historical InsideEVs excerpt also reported 108 miles at 70 mph for a 2020 MINI Cooper SE with a 28.9-kWh usable battery, averaging 3.7 miles per kWh. That single older-car result is not a rule for newer EVs.

Consumer Reports’ separate test summary said some of its 22 tested models exceeded advertised ranges and others fell short. Because its endpoint and method differ from MotorTrend’s, those results should be read as another test approach, not merged into one apples-to-apples table.

Why the EPA range is not a 70-mph promise

The EPA determines EV range using laboratory dynamometer tests, including city and highway cycles. Automakers may use a multi-cycle method that also includes constant-speed cycles. The EPA label’s combined range weights adjusted city and highway results 55% and 45%, so it is not a direct prediction of a sustained 70-mph drive.

According to the EPA’s explanation of fuel-economy testing, the most common adjustment approach multiplies laboratory results by 0.7 to account for real-world effects such as air conditioning, cold temperatures, and high-speed or aggressive driving. In the EPA’s illustrative example, a vehicle recording 200 miles on its highway laboratory test would yield 140 miles after that adjustment. This is an example, not a conversion to apply mechanically to every EV: optional approaches are permitted.

It draws zero power when inactive, protecting your battery while ensuring the device is ready every time you drive

What changes your range at 70 mph?

  • Vehicle and configuration: Make, model, model year, trim and wheel/tire setup affect the result. The tested examples above show that specific EVs can differ considerably.
  • Battery: Usable capacity and battery condition affect how much energy is available for the drive.
  • Weather and cabin climate: Cold and heating or cooling demand can reduce the distance available. The EPA includes HVAC and cold-weather effects in its adjustment approach.
  • Route and wind: Elevation changes and wind affect energy use; MotorTrend used an out-and-back loop designed to minimize those influences.
  • Usable charge: The distance changes depending on your starting state of charge and the reserve you want to keep. A test that stops at 95% of a full charge does not establish a zero-to-zero distance.

How to estimate your own 70-mph trip

A useful estimate needs more than the car’s EPA combined figure. Gather the details below, then look for a 70-mph test of the same configuration—or use a vehicle-specific trip estimate that accounts for conditions.

  • Make, model, model year and trim
  • Wheel and tire configuration, if known
  • Starting state of charge and the reserve you want at arrival
  • Expected weather and cabin heating or cooling use
  • Route, including elevation changes and likely wind

Do not plan on reaching a displayed zero as though it were a guaranteed, safe endpoint. If you share those vehicle and trip details, a range estimate can be made more specific; without them, an exact distance would be false precision.
