A 2023 report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), summarizing a Defense Department estimate, says more than 40,000 U.S.-provided vehicles remained in the country, including 23,825 Humvees. That accounting does not break out Ford Rangers, and it does not establish how many vehicles were operational or later captured.
What the numbers actually count
Several widely cited figures describe different vehicle populations and different moments. They should not be treated as interchangeable: vehicles fielded to Afghan forces over years are not the same as vehicles estimated to remain in Afghanistan after the 2021 collapse.
| Figure | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| More than 31,000 light tactical vehicles | The U.S. Army reported in 2012 that this many had been fielded to the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police. The Army said nearly 26,000 were police variants. U.S. Army, January 3, 2012. | It is not a Ranger-only total and is not a count of vehicles left behind in 2021. |
| About 76,000 key vehicles | The Government Accountability Office reported in 2017 that Defense Department data covered vehicles funded for Afghan forces through fiscal year 2016; nearly 30 percent were Humvees. GAO, 2017. | It is a cumulative funding figure, not a post-withdrawal inventory or operational count. |
| More than 40,000 vehicles remained, including 23,825 Humvees | SIGAR’s 2023 report summarized a Defense Department estimate of U.S.-provided vehicles remaining in Afghanistan after the 2021 withdrawal. SIGAR, 2023. | It does not give a separate Ford Ranger count, prove the vehicles were all captured, or show how many worked. |
SIGAR also reports table categories of 53,180 general-purpose or light tactical vehicles and 43,139 remaining ground vehicles. Those figures are category totals, not Ford Ranger counts; the labels and categories should not be collapsed into a model-specific total.
Why Afghan forces had Ford Rangers
The Rangers were supplied to Afghan security forces, not simply left-over U.S. military vehicles. The U.S. Army says the Combined Security Transition Command–Afghanistan began equipping the Afghan National Security Forces with Ford Ranger light tactical vehicles in 2005. Both army and police units used them.

The Army described the Ranger J97 as the base for four fleet variants: cargo, mobile maintenance, police, and tactical ambulance. In its 2012 account, police variants served the Afghan National Police and cargo variants the Afghan National Army; both forces used ambulance and mobile-maintenance vehicles.
The vehicles were commercially acquired through Global Fleet Sales, which the Army identified as an authorized Ford dealer, then modified for security-force use. The Army listed 31 modifications, including weapon-storage provisions, heavy-duty suspension, collision protection, an extended-range fuel tank, and an off-road package. These are descriptions from the Army account, not independent vehicle testing.

Why fleet size did not guarantee readiness
Vehicle counts alone do not show how many could be used. In the Army article, Lt. Col. Graham Compton, Product Director for Non-Standard Vehicles, called the Ranger a “dependable workhorse” based on field feedback. That is an attributed official assessment, not a measured reliability finding.
The Army also reported that Afghan forces lacked the logistics infrastructure, trained maintainers, and spare parts needed to sustain a large vehicle fleet. That limitation matters when interpreting any total: a vehicle could be fielded or still present without being ready for service.

SIGAR says the Defense Department’s post-collapse inventory relied on military records and the Afghan forces’ CoreIMS inventory system, but the department had low confidence in the data’s accuracy. CoreIMS crashed in early 2021, losing records for equipment provided after March. SIGAR also says the operating condition of much of the abandoned equipment was unknown.
What is known about the vehicles after the collapse
SIGAR’s 2022 assessment described Taliban units using pickup trucks and armored vehicles likely supplied to the former Afghan forces. It also noted that maintenance, parts, and fuel could be difficult to secure. This supports a qualified account of Taliban use, not a claim that every remaining vehicle was usable. SIGAR, 2022.

Janes reported in 2025 that the Taliban Ministry of National Defense announced restoration of vehicles abandoned by the Afghan National Army, including a batch of 30 HMMWVs and another batch of five vehicles described as “ranger” vehicles. Janes said those likely referred to Ford Rangers; that identification is an inference, not a verified nationwide Ranger inventory. Janes, 2025.
On October 4, 2025, Afghanistan International reported that the Taliban Interior Ministry was phasing out Ford Rangers in favor of Toyota vehicles and motorcycles, citing fuel and spare-parts expenses. The report concerns that ministry and does not establish the fate of every Ranger in Afghanistan. Afghanistan International, October 4, 2025.

Vehicles that were not left inside Afghanistan
The post-withdrawal inventory should not be read as a count of everything originally supplied. SIGAR reports that U.S. forces destroyed or removed some equipment, Afghan aircraft were flown to neighboring countries, and 73 vehicles—mostly Humvees—pending delivery to Afghanistan were held at a U.S. base in Kuwait. Those 73 were not part of the fleet left inside Afghanistan.
Quick Recap
How to read claims about Rangers, Humvees, and captures
- “Fielded” or “funded” describes earlier program totals; it does not mean the vehicles remained in 2021.
- “Remained” is the Defense Department estimate relayed by SIGAR; it does not mean every vehicle was captured in working order.
- “Captured,” “restored,” or “in use” needs its own evidence. Reports of Taliban use or particular restoration batches do not establish a complete inventory.
- “Ford Ranger” should not be inferred from broad light-tactical-vehicle totals. The public post-withdrawal estimate does not identify a Ranger subtotal.
