A MacPherson strut combines a shock absorber with a structural role in locating the wheel. Because it replaces a separate upper suspension link, its design influences how the wheel moves, how steering forces are carried, and how the car responds to bumps. Ride comfort and handling depend not on the layout alone, but on the strut’s geometry, spring and damper tuning, friction, structural flexibility, tires and the rest of the vehicle.
What is a MacPherson strut suspension?
In a common MacPherson layout, the strut assembly connects the wheel support to the vehicle body, while lower locating links connect the wheel assembly to the body below. The assembly contains a spring and damper, and the strut also helps locate the wheel. That structural role is the key distinction: it is more than a device that controls bouncing. The arrangement eliminates the need for a separate upper suspension link, though exact details vary by vehicle.

At the upper end, a mount connects the strut to the body. In many designs, a bearing in or near that mount lets the strut rotate as the wheel steers. The damper controls suspension movement; the spring supports the vehicle and stores energy when it compresses. They are packaged together, but perform different jobs.
How does a MacPherson strut work as the wheel moves?
When a wheel travels upward over a bump or downward into rebound, the spring compresses or extends and the damper resists that movement. At the same time, the wheel follows an arc set by the suspension links and strut. It does not simply move straight up and down: its orientation and position relative to the body can change through the travel.

Engineers analyze this as a three-dimensional mechanism, tracking wheel position and motion as the suspension moves. Relevant geometry includes camber (wheel tilt viewed from the front), toe (whether the wheels point inward or outward viewed from above), caster and steering-axis inclination (angles that describe the steering axis), and track width (the distance between the left and right wheels). These relationships also change as the wheel steers. Their effects depend on the particular design and tuning; there is no single ideal geometry for every vehicle. Why do spring and damper design affect ride comfort?
The spring carries the vehicle’s load and compresses as the wheel rises. The damper controls how quickly the spring and suspension move, helping manage repeated compression and rebound. Their behavior matters to comfort, but so does friction inside the absorber: resistance that is not part of the intended damping can affect how freely the suspension responds to small movements.

A 2000 SAE paper on MacPherson-strut spring design examines the spring’s force-action line as a way to reduce absorber friction and improve ride comfort. The practical lesson is that designers consider how the spring’s force acts on the strut, not just the spring’s rate. The paper supports this as a design approach; it does not establish a universal comfort improvement or a result that applies to every strut. How can strut flexibility and side loads affect handling?
Structural flexibility can change wheel geometry
Because the strut helps locate the wheel, it also carries structural loads and can bend. A 1997 SAE Brasil paper reports that structural flexibility affects suspension geometry, particularly camber, with implications for handling and driving safety. The degree of flexibility depends on the design; the finding is not a measurement that can be applied to every vehicle. It shows why designers must account for the strut as a load-bearing member as well as a damper. [SAE Brasil, “Design Characteristics of McPherson Suspensions” (1997)]

Side loading is a design concern, not a universal fault
A damper in a strut can experience side loads as the suspension operates. A 1994 SAE paper discusses side loads that can impair damper response and examines a side-load spring as a design response. This identifies an engineering issue and one way to address it; it does not mean that every production strut has a problem or that a vehicle with struts will handle poorly. [SAE, “Side Load Springs as a Solution to Minimize Adverse Side Loads Acting on the McPherson Strut” (1994)]

Designers tune suspension and steering geometry together against motion and performance goals. The outcome for the driver depends on how the system’s parts and forces work together:

- RESTORES RIDE HEIGHT -- Precisely calibrated to meet the OE design, each application-specific coil spring type is engineered to restore ride height and support the vehicle's weight
- VEHICLE-SPECIFIC DESIGN -- Application-specific coil spring, mount and strut designs ensure optimized ride and handling experience unique to each vehicle profile
- Geometry through travel and steering: changes in camber, toe and related angles affect how the tire meets the road.
- Spring and damper behavior: these support the vehicle and control suspension movement, while absorber friction can influence response.
- Structural stiffness and compliance: flexibility can affect wheel geometry under load.
- Side-load management: forces acting across the damper are a design consideration.
- Vehicle integration: tires and the rest of the vehicle’s setup contribute to the resulting ride and handling.
These factors explain why the layout alone cannot promise either a comfortable ride or sharp handling. Engineering studies identify mechanisms and trade-offs, not one comfort or handling score for all MacPherson suspensions. [JTEKT Engineering Journal, No. 1019E (2023)]
