How long do BYD batteries last? There is no well-established real-world lifespan in years or kilometres for every BYD traction battery. BYD cites more than 5,000 charge-and-discharge cycles in testing, but that manufacturer claim is not proof that a complete vehicle pack will last 1.2 million kilometres. The clearest ownership benchmark is the warranty for the vehicle’s market and model; it defines coverage under stated terms, not an expected battery failure date.
What BYD’s 5,000-cycle claim means
In a January 2026 announcement, BYD said its Blade Battery had exceeded 5,000 charge-and-discharge cycles in intensive load and endurance testing, and described that as equivalent to a service life of 1.2 million kilometres. That is BYD’s test claim and equivalence, not an independently established distance driven by a representative fleet of BYD cars. It should not be read as a guarantee that every pack will reach that mileage.
Cycle testing and vehicle mileage are not interchangeable measures. The announcement does not establish how a particular car’s battery will age in daily use, or give a universal service life in years. BYD’s European announcement also describes the warranty extension and its scope.
BYD battery warranty terms vary by market
These published examples show why buyers and owners should check the warranty booklet for their exact vehicle, country and contract. The time and distance limits are alternative limits: the stated term applies until whichever limit is reached first, subject to the applicable warranty conditions.

A warranty limit is a coverage boundary, not a forecast of when the battery will fail or a claim that it will reach the distance limit without degradation. Coverage depends on the applicable terms, including any model, use or contract exceptions. Before buying, ask for the vehicle-specific warranty document; if you already own one, use that document rather than assuming another market’s limits apply.
What independent degradation evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A 2020 laboratory study by Ahmed Gailani and co-authors compared cells from Sony, BYD and Samsung. Under the study conditions, it reported nearly 8% calendar capacity loss after 30 months for the BYD lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell. This is a result for tested cells, not a measured average for complete BYD car packs in everyday use.

The result therefore cannot establish a typical annual degradation rate, predict a specific owner’s remaining range, or give a vehicle lifespan in years. Cell-level laboratory results and whole-pack fleet performance are different kinds of evidence. The study’s abstract and paper provide its research context.

BYD Australia’s 2025 handbook recommends keeping the battery at 40–60% state of charge if the vehicle will be stored for more than seven days. It also says to recharge a battery at 0% as soon as possible and warns that leaving it unrecharged for seven days may cause permanent damage not covered by warranty. The handbook recommends regular full charging and a low-charge AC cycle every three to six months to help range estimation.
