In the Audi and BMW systems described by their manufacturers, that light forms a supplementary, long-range high-beam spot—not an exposed laser beam aimed at the road. The headlamp’s optics shape the light, and vehicle controls manage when it operates and how it responds to other traffic.
How a laser headlight makes light
- Laser diodes produce blue light. The diodes generate a tightly directed beam inside the headlamp.
- Optics direct the beam to a converter. Lenses guide it onto a phosphor material, also called a phosphor converter.
- The converter emits white light. The road-facing illumination is converted white light, not the original blue laser beam.
- Headlamp optics form the beam. The system shapes that light for the road. In the cited Audi and BMW examples, it supplements other high-beam lighting as a focused, long-range spot.
BMW describes several high-performance diodes sending a bundled beam through special lenses onto a fluorescent phosphorus substance, which transforms it into white light. Audi describes a 450 nm blue beam converted to white light at 5,500 K. Those figures and designs describe the manufacturers’ systems; they are not universal specifications. Audi’s lighting technology lexicon and BMW’s 2014 series-production announcement explain their respective systems.
What laser headlights do on the road
A laser element in these examples is a high-beam supplement, rather than a complete replacement for every other headlamp function. Its value is a concentrated spot that can extend illumination farther ahead. The exact role and operation depend on the vehicle’s headlamp design and control logic.
Audi’s described system
Audi says its laser spot operates above 70 km/h and outside city limits under that system’s logic. A windshield camera detects vehicles within range and automatically dims the spot. Audi says the spot doubles high-beam range to around 600 metres. These are claims about Audi’s system, not guarantees for all laser-equipped cars.

- Perfect Light Pattern: AUXITO fog light bulbs adopt latest chips technology, 0.04 inch ultra-thin light emitting, 16 pcs chips each bulb make the light pattern focused and even without dazzling oncoming traffic.
- Plug and Play: Thanks to the intelligent IC driver, AUXITO H8 9005 light bulbs provide an easy solution for night driving with high compatibility for a wider range of models. Error free, plug and play.
BMW’s described system
BMW’s 2014 announcement describes an optional laser boost for the i8, with a claimed range of up to 600 metres. It also describes camera-aided high-beam control intended to prevent dazzling. That model-specific manufacturer claim is not a like-for-like test against Audi or other headlamps.
How glare is managed
Long-range light must be controlled around other road users. In the Audi example, a windshield camera detects vehicles and the laser spot dims automatically; BMW likewise described camera-aided high-beam control. These features are specific to the cited systems. Do not assume every vehicle with a laser component uses the same sensors, activation threshold, or dimming behavior.

What “laser” does—and does not—mean
The word can appear in product names without describing a laser headlamp. For example, OSRAM’s NIGHT BREAKER LASER is a halogen headlight lamp that uses laser ablation technology; it is not a laser headlamp. OSRAM’s product information identifies it as a halogen lamp.
How to compare laser and LED headlights
Compare what each system does in a specific vehicle, rather than relying on the technology label or a manufacturer’s maximum-range figure. Useful points include:

- Beam performance: Compare beam pattern and range under the same test conditions. Audi’s and BMW’s published range claims are not independent, controlled comparisons.
- Glare control: Check the actual vehicle’s high-beam assistance and dimming functions.
- Market and trim: Availability and equipment can vary by vehicle version and market.
- Repair and replacement: For service parts, confirm the exact model year, trim, and market with the vehicle maker or parts supplier; the cited descriptions do not establish a compatible replacement assembly.
Does the technology mean a car is legal or approved everywhere?
No general approval conclusion follows from the cited sources. The NHTSA page available here is a 1996 interpretation concerning an aftermarket rear-fog anti-collision laser, not a ruling on automotive laser headlamps. It says FMVSS No. 108 bars added equipment that impairs required lighting and notes that state requirements may apply. It should not be treated as proof that a particular headlamp is approved or legal in every jurisdiction. Read the NHTSA interpretation in its stated context.
