When you pay for an IONITY ad-hoc charging session with a bank card, the first amount shown may be a temporary authorisation rather than the final cost of charging. IONITY typically reserves 40 EUR, 40 GBP or a similar local-currency amount, then adjusts the reservation once your session total is known. Your bank statement may show both the reservation and the final transaction while the first entry is still pending; that does not, by itself, mean you paid twice.
IONITY says most reservations are released within five business days, but cancellation can take up to 28 business days. The exact timing depends partly on your card issuer. The payment route matters too: QR-code payments and contactless terminals use ad-hoc bank-card authorisation, while IONITY RFID, a mobility-service-provider contract and Plug & Charge are different access methods.

What happens when you pay for an IONITY ad-hoc session?
An ad-hoc session is one you start and pay for without relying on an IONITY subscription tariff. IONITY offers two direct ad-hoc bank-card routes: scan the charger’s QR code and pay on its payment website, or use an NFC/contactless terminal at a site that has one. These routes differ in where you authorise payment, but both may involve an initial reservation before the final session cost is settled.
The reservation lets IONITY check that the payment method works and that funds are available. It is not necessarily the amount you will ultimately pay. Once the session ends and its cost is known, IONITY adjusts the reservation to the final amount. The charge you should use to understand your session cost is the completed final transaction, not simply the initial pending amount.

IONITY’s published reservation examples
IONITY describes a typical reservation of 40 EUR, 40 GBP or a similar local-currency amount. Its support guidance gives these examples for selected currencies:
- 40 EUR, 40 CHF or 40 GBP
- 300 DKK
- 500 NOK or 500 SEK
- 200 PLN
- 15,000 HUF
- 1,000 CZK
These are examples, not a promise that every currency will have an exact converted equivalent. The payment page may show another local amount. Check the amount displayed for your selected payment method before authorising it.
How to start a session and authorise payment
Pay by QR code and payment website
- Scan the QR code on the charger, or select the charger on IONITY’s payment website.
- Choose an available payment method and complete the payment authorisation. Your bank may ask you to approve it.
- Connect the car after authorisation is complete, then start charging according to the charger’s instructions.
IONITY lists Visa and Mastercard, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay, among its payment options. It also says American Express is available through the payment website in all countries. The options presented at checkout are the practical guide for your specific session.

- At a site with a terminal, select the charger on the terminal if prompted.
- Present your card or phone and follow the on-screen instructions. Because the authorisation can be relatively high, the terminal may ask you to enter a PIN.
- Wait for the terminal to display approval before plugging in the car.
Not every IONITY charger has a contactless terminal. IONITY’s guidance lists Visa and Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay for card-terminal payments. American Express acceptance at terminals is limited to Germany and the UK in that guidance; its stated availability through the payment website is broader. If there is no terminal, the QR/payment-website route is the direct ad-hoc alternative where that service is available.

How the reservation becomes the final charge
After authorising the initial reservation, you charge the car and end the session. IONITY can then calculate the session cost and adjust the reservation to match. The final amount is based on the actual session cost, not automatically the full initial reservation.
If the session costs less than the reservation
IONITY’s NFC example is a 30 EUR session against a 40 EUR reservation. In that example, the final charge is 30 EUR and the 10 EUR difference is released. The release may not appear immediately in your available balance or statement: the bank controls how quickly a cancelled authorisation disappears from your account view.
If the session costs more than the reservation
IONITY’s example is a 100 EUR session against a 40 EUR reservation. In that case, the additional 60 EUR is reserved or collected so the total can cover the final cost. The example explains why a reservation is not necessarily a maximum charge. It is an initial authorisation; the completed transaction reflects the cost of the charging session.

For NFC billing, IONITY says it completes billing overnight. The timing and appearance of transactions can still vary by card issuer, so a delay between ending a session and seeing the completed amount is not, by itself, proof of a payment problem.

Why two IONITY entries do not always mean two charges
A card statement may show a pending reservation and a separate final transaction. IONITY says the reservation is cancelled while the final amount is charged. A pending authorisation and a completed transaction are therefore different things, even when both appear in the account at once.
Look at the status of each entry in your bank’s app or statement. A pending reservation is not the same as a second completed debit. If you attempted to start a session several times, multiple reservations may also appear; each attempt can leave an authorisation to be released. Compare the completed transaction with the session you actually took, and allow the issuer time to update the pending entries.
If two entries both become completed charges, or the completed amount does not match the session cost, contact your card issuer and IONITY with the transaction details and any receipt. The operator’s description of a reservation explains normal pending entries, but it cannot establish how a particular issuer has classified a specific transaction.
When will the pending reservation disappear?
IONITY says reservations are released within five business days in most cases, but cancellation can take up to 28 business days. Its terminal guidance also describes a delay of up to four weeks and attributes timing in part to bank processes. These are operator estimates, not a guarantee that every bank will remove a pending authorisation on the same day.

Your card issuer controls when the cancelled authorisation stops appearing as pending or becomes available again in your balance. If the reservation remains after IONITY’s stated maximum period, contact the issuer and ask whether it still holds the authorisation. Provide the date, amount and merchant details shown in the pending entry. If the issuer needs confirmation from IONITY, use the session details or receipt to help the operator identify the payment.
Which payment route should you use?

If you have an IONITY subscription and want its subscription pricing, use the app rather than assuming the NFC terminal will apply the tariff. IONITY says terminal sessions are charged at the standard IONITY DIRECT price and do not support subscription tariffs.

Sites without contactless terminals
A terminal is not fitted at every IONITY site. If you do not see one, use the charger QR code and payment website where available. The availability of the terminal is a site-level difference; the payment route should be clear before you begin the session.

IONITY’s support guidance identifies Portugal as an exception: ad-hoc payment through the IONITY app and IONITY payment website is currently unavailable there. It says scanning the charger’s QR code redirects drivers to miio to authorise payment and start charging. Because country-level payment arrangements can change, follow the option presented by the QR code at the station rather than assuming the usual website flow applies.

Payment-method differences
Payment methods may differ between the website and an on-site terminal. In particular, IONITY’s guidance distinguishes American Express availability: it lists Amex through the payment website in all countries, while terminal acceptance is limited to Germany and the UK. Check the payment interface or terminal for the options available at your location.
How to get a receipt or invoice
For QR-payment sessions, IONITY says you can add details to receive an invoice by email within 24–48 hours. For NFC sessions, receipts are available through IONITY’s receipt portal, generally within 24 hours. These are IONITY’s stated timeframes; they are not a statement about when your bank releases a pending reservation.
IONITY’s terminal instructions say Safari does not work with the receipt portal and recommend using Edge or Chrome instead. If the portal does not load in Safari, try one of those browsers. Keep the receipt or invoice with your bank entry if you need to query a mismatch between the final payment and the charging session.

What to do if the payment does not look right
- There is one pending amount and no final transaction yet: check whether the session has ended and allow time for billing. IONITY says NFC billing is completed overnight; issuer processing can affect when entries change.
- The pending amount is higher than the session cost: compare it with the final transaction. The difference is the portion of the reservation to be released, not automatically an extra completed charge.
- You see several pending amounts: consider whether you made more than one start attempt. IONITY says multiple attempts can result in multiple reservations.
- The reservation remains visible: check its status with your issuer. IONITY’s usual release estimate is five business days, with cancellation taking up to 28 business days.
- You see two completed charges or an unexpected final amount: keep the session receipt and contact the issuer and IONITY with the date, amounts and transaction details. A pending reservation alone is not evidence of a duplicate completed charge.
- You cannot start payment: confirm whether you are using the site’s available route, whether the bank requires an authorisation step, and whether the terminal has approved payment before connecting the car.
