IMSA’s GTP class is the top prototype category in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. GTP cars are purpose-built race cars, not modified road cars; most use a hybrid system that recovers energy under braking, while IMSA identifies Aston Martin’s entry as non-hybrid. GTP competes alongside LMP2, GTD PRO, and GTD, so a car’s class position and its place in the overall race order are different things. The exact cars, participants, and technical settings depend on the event and the applicable 2026 rules and bulletins.
What GTP means in IMSA racing
GTP stands for Grand Touring Prototype. It is one of two prototype classes in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship; the other is LMP2. The championship also includes the grand touring classes GTD PRO and GTD. These four classes share the track during multi-class events, but each has its own class competition and standings. A GTP car can therefore lead its class without being first overall, or occupy a lower place in the overall order while still contending for a strong GTP result.

That distinction is useful whenever a broadcast or results page shows several positions at once. Overall position compares all cars in the race, while class position compares a car only with the entries in its own class. IMSA’s class overview describes the four categories and the visual system used to help viewers recognize class position.
How to read the leader light
IMSA uses an LED panel on the side of each car to show its position within its class. The number’s color corresponds to the car’s class. Treat the panel as a class-position aid, not as a complete overall leaderboard: it answers where that car stands among its class rivals, not where it sits against every car on track.

In practice, a viewer should keep two questions separate: “Who is leading GTP?” and “Who is leading the race overall?” In a multi-class event the answers can differ, and a car passing another car does not necessarily mean it has gained a place in its own class. The leader light helps with the first question; the race timing or broadcast classification is needed for the second.
What GTP cars are, and what their powertrains do
GTP cars are purpose-built prototypes designed for the racetrack. That makes them fundamentally different from GTD and GTD PRO cars, which are based on road-going production models. IMSA says GTP cars first took to the track in 2023. The class’s prototype character is also why a GTP car should not be understood simply as a high-performance version of a showroom model: it is a dedicated competition car, with manufacturer-developed engine and bodywork styling within the class’s technical framework.
Most GTP entries use a common hybrid powertrain. In broad terms, it captures kinetic energy during braking, stores that energy in batteries, and makes it available later. This describes energy recovery and reuse; it does not mean that every GTP entry is hybrid. IMSA’s overview specifically identifies Aston Martin as non-hybrid, so blanket descriptions such as “all GTP cars are hybrids” are inaccurate.

IMSA says manufacturers develop their own internal-combustion engines and bodywork styling. Its class overview names Acura, Aston Martin, BMW, Cadillac, and Porsche as GTP manufacturers. That is the manufacturer list in the overview, not a guaranteed roster for every event or a claim that each manufacturer’s car appears at every race. The event entry list is the right source for determining which cars and participants are actually entered on a particular date.
What to compare between GTP cars
A comparison grounded in the class information should distinguish the manufacturer and homologated chassis/bodywork, the engine design, whether the particular entry uses the hybrid system, and the event’s applicable Balance of Performance (BoP). These are relevant points of difference, but they do not by themselves establish which car is faster. A performance comparison needs current, event-specific evidence, such as official results and the applicable technical notices. Manufacturer reputation or drivetrain configuration alone is not enough to infer a result.
Teams and drivers: why the event and date matter
There is no single stable list of GTP teams and drivers that can be stated from the manufacturer overview alone. IMSA’s current provisional points pathway is its WeatherTech standings page, but that page’s reviewed text did not expose a complete 2026 team-and-driver roster. A standings page is useful for points context; it should not be treated as a substitute for an event entry list or the results of a specific race.

To identify who is racing, first choose the event and date. Then check IMSA’s current entry list for the participants entered in GTP and consult event results for who actually took part and how the race was classified. This matters because a manufacturer name does not tell you which team is entered, which drivers are assigned, or whether the lineup applies to another event. If publishing or discussing a roster, label it with the event or date it describes and use the official event material rather than inferring names from the manufacturer list.

How the 2026 GTP rules are organized
GTP is governed by a framework of documents rather than one universal specification page. IMSA’s 2026 Rules & Regulations index points to the relevant rule materials. The framework includes Sporting Regulations, Series Supplementary Regulations, Technical Regulations, Event Supplementary Regulations, and applicable bulletins. The rule documents define GTP as Grand Touring Prototype, and IMSA reserves discretion over a car’s eligibility and compliance.

The distinction between sporting and technical rules is practical. Sporting regulations are the place to look for race procedures; technical regulations and applicable bulletins address car specifications and technical limits. Event Supplementary Regulations can add event-specific provisions. A reader looking up a procedure or requirement should start with the document that governs that subject, then check whether a later revision or event document changes what applies.
For 2026, IMSA lists its sporting regulations on the rules index. The relevant sporting regulations and SSR document cited here is the June 17, 2026 blackline version. The linked June 17 blackline PDF is the later 2026 sporting document among the two linked versions. A January 23 redline PDF is also available, but should not displace the later document when checking current sporting rules. Always confirm the revision applicable to the event rather than assuming an earlier document remains controlling.

Balance of Performance, commonly shortened to BoP, is a technical setting that can vary by event. IMSA’s 2026 technical bulletins index lists GTP BoP and power-correction notices for particular events. That means a setting published for one race should not be repeated as a universal GTP figure or as a season-long specification.

When a technical figure matters, identify the event, the bulletin, and its date. Check whether there is a later notice for that same event. The relevant value may be changed through event-specific documentation, so a figure copied without its event context can mislead even if it was accurate when issued. The rule index and bulletin index are more reliable starting points than a generalized description of the class.

- Identify the class first. Confirm that the car you are following is in GTP rather than LMP2, GTD PRO, or GTD. IMSA’s class overview explains the championship’s four-class structure.
- Separate class position from overall order. Use the leader light for the car’s place among its class competitors, and use the event timing or classification for overall position.
- Check the actual event entry list for names. A manufacturer appearing in the class overview does not establish which team or drivers entered that race.
- Use the event’s results for the race outcome. Results establish participation and classification for the event, whereas season standings provide points context.
- Check the current technical notice before citing a setting. For a BoP or power-correction value, use the bulletin applicable to that event and retain its date and event qualification.
This sequence avoids common errors: treating the overall leader as the GTP leader, describing an entire season from a single event entry, or applying one race’s technical setting to the whole class.
What is changing later—and what is not a 2026 rule
IMSA, the ACO, and the FIA outlined a framework for top-prototype regulations beginning in 2030. IMSA describes the planned framework as using a single two-wheel-drive platform, in contrast with current rules that allow rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive prototypes. This is future-facing context, not a description of the current 2026 GTP rules. The planned framework should not be used to characterize a present-day GTP car or to imply that the 2030 regulations already govern the class.
