Teams share cars among multiple drivers, manage event-specific driving-time rules and pit stops, and score points according to finishing position—with qualifying points also at stake. This guide covers the 2026 WeatherTech Championship; other IMSA series can use different formats and rules.
What are the IMSA WeatherTech classes?
The 2026 WeatherTech Championship has four classes grouped into two broad types: purpose-built prototypes and GT cars based on road-going production models. Not every round includes all four classes; check the event schedule and supplement for the lineup at a particular race.

These descriptions follow IMSA’s class guide; its manufacturer examples are for 2025 and should not be treated as a 2026 entry list.
Why do different classes race at once?
The classes share the track, but cars are classified and scored against their own class rivals. A car’s overall position is therefore only part of the picture: a GT car can be far down the overall order while leading its class. IMSA’s colored LED number system helps viewers identify class position on the cars.

When following a race, keep four things in view: which class a car is in, its place within that class, its overall place, and how much race time remains. A pass between cars of different classes may be important for traffic management without changing either car’s standing against its class competitors.
How long are IMSA races, and do all classes enter?
Race length varies by round. The 2026 schedule lists the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA at 24 hours, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring at 12 hours, and Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen at six hours. It also includes shorter events, such as a 100-minute race at Long Beach. These are event durations, not a standard length for every championship race. See IMSA’s 2026 schedule.

The class lineup varies too. Under the 2026 regulations, Long Beach lists GTP and GTD, while the Rolex 24 and Sebring list all four classes. The event schedule and supplement determine the applicable duration, lineup, and event-specific rules.
How does qualifying work?
IMSA’s fan explainer describes a 20-minute qualifying segment for GTP and 15-minute segments for the other classes. One driver qualifies each car. GTP and LMP2 set their class grids by qualifying time; GTD PRO and GTD qualifiers are ordered together for the GT grid. The fastest qualifier in each class earns the Motul Pole Award.

For 2026, the sporting regulations specify that an LMP2 qualifying driver must be Bronze-rated. Qualifying sets the starting position and awards championship points as well as the race grid. Check the relevant event supplement for current details. IMSA explains the general format in WeatherTech: Understanding The Sport.
How many drivers share an IMSA car?
Endurance entries share a car among multiple drivers. IMSA’s fan guide says at least two drivers are required per race and notes that Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen, and Road Atlanta endurance races may use three to four. That is general guidance, not a guarantee about a particular entry; consult the event entry list for the actual lineup.

Driver time is set event by event
Each driver must satisfy the minimum drive time in the event supplement. The 2026 rules set a maximum of four hours in any six-hour period unless the event supplement sets another limit. Bronze drivers accepted into GTP or GTD PRO have a minimum drive time consistent with the LMP2 or GTD rules. There is no single minimum stint length that applies across all classes and events.
What the rules mean for strategy
Teams must distribute the race among their drivers while meeting eligibility and time requirements. They also choose when to change drivers and tires, take fuel, and address repairs or adjustments. Those choices trade time in the pits against track position; a strategy that makes sense in one race is not a universal rule.

How do IMSA points work?
The 2026 race-points table awards points by eligible finishing position. The car’s result earns points for its drivers, subject to technical and sporting eligibility and penalties.

Qualifying awards points by class at 10% of the corresponding race-points amounts. The championship also recognizes manufacturer, constructor, tire-partner, and team standings, as well as the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup. “Points” can refer to different standings, so identify the title or class table being followed. The 2026 system is set out in the IMSA sporting regulations; current leaders and totals change during the season.
What happens during an IMSA pit stop?
A stop may include refueling, tire changes, a driver change, repairs, or adjustments. The exact combination depends on the car, the team’s plan, and the rules for that event. IMSA’s fan guide says nobody may cross the pit wall until the car is fully stopped. During a driver change, a crew member may help connect the incoming driver’s radio, air hose, drink tube, and safety belts.
Crew and refueling restrictions
For race pit-box work, the 2026 regulations limit the number of people working on a car to four. Fuel transfer requires a properly attired crew and a fire-extinguisher attendant ready at the car; restrictions also apply to people and work around active refueling. The permitted tasks and whether they can be performed at the same time depend on the car’s systems and the applicable rule provisions. See the 2026 WeatherTech Championship regulations.

- The car enters pit lane and slows to the speed prescribed for that event.
- It stops in its assigned pit box; crew members can approach once it is fully stopped.
- The team performs the permitted work, which may include fuel, tires, repairs, adjustments, and a driver exchange.
- The car rejoins traffic, where its position depends on the stop, other cars’ timing, and the race situation.
IMSA’s fan explainer gives a pit-lane limit of 60 km/h and describes a drive-through penalty for speeding. Because pit-lane instructions can be event-specific and time-sensitive, verify the current official instructions before applying that figure to a particular round.
