These stories share an animal, not a single automotive tradition.
Why do horses appear on Porsche and Ferrari badges?
Porsche’s horse comes from civic heraldry; Ferrari’s comes from a personal emblem adopted for racing. Their similar animal imagery has separate origins.
Porsche: Stuttgart’s rearing horse
The horse in Porsche’s crest is derived from Stuttgart’s city seal. Porsche connects the city’s history and name to horse breeding and a ducal stud farm called “Stuotgarten.” The crest also incorporates Stuttgart’s name, red and black regional colors, and stylized antlers from the regional coat of arms. Porsche’s design-history account explains these elements as part of the crest’s local roots.
The crest itself was a response to a branding need, not simply a decoration chosen when the company began. After a design competition organized by Ferry Porsche and customer Ottomar Domnick in 1951 produced no approved design, US importer Max Hoffman urged Ferry to create a visual quality seal that expressed the company’s roots. Porsche credits publicity head Herrmann Lapper and designer Franz Xaver Reimspiess with the eventual design. It first appeared on a Porsche 356 steering wheel in 1952, then on hubcaps and hoods. Porsche Newsroom’s historical account traces that development.

The crest has been refined rather than fundamentally replaced. Porsche says its 2023 update was the seventh iteration, retaining its essential elements while adjusting details and proportions. Style Porsche vice president Michael Mauer described that update as combining historical characteristics with details including a honeycomb structure and brushed metal.
Ferrari: Francesco Baracca’s emblem on the track
Ferrari traces its Prancing Horse to Francesco Baracca, an Italian aviator and war hero who bore the emblem. According to Ferrari, Baracca’s family suggested that Enzo Ferrari adopt it for good luck. The horse first appeared on Scuderia Ferrari cars in 1932, at the Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours; Ferrari’s account also notes an earlier appearance on a motorcycle that year. Ferrari’s retrospective recounts the emblem’s adoption and early use.

The first version paired the black horse with a yellow field associated with Modena, Enzo Ferrari’s home city, and included the team initials and Italian colors. The symbol began as a racing-team mark and became part of Ferrari’s enduring identity. That is a different story from Porsche’s use of Stuttgart’s civic horse: Ferrari’s was an adopted personal emblem, not a city coat of arms.
How did horses influence Mustang and Bronco branding?
Ford’s Mustang and Bronco examples are connected to model branding, but the evidence is not identical: Ford documents a running-horse logo and multiple reported associations for Mustang’s name, while Bronco’s documented horse emblem is specific to a trim package.

Mustang: a running-horse badge and a name with more than one association
Ford credits Phil Clark with designing the Mustang’s running-horse logo. Before settling on Mustang, Ford considered names including Cougar, Allegro, Torino, and Avanti. Ford de México’s account presents both wild North American horses and the North American P-51 Mustang aircraft as associations offered for the name. The available account does not establish one as the sole cause of the choice, so it is more accurate to treat them as concurrent associations than to declare a definitive origin. Ford de México’s article on the logo and name gives this account.
Bronco: Ford’s “another pony” and a Ranger-package emblem
At the Bronco’s introduction on August 11, 1965, Ford executive Don Frey called it “another pony” alongside Mustang. Ford described the Bronco as a vehicle for road and trail use, but this launch language does not establish why the Bronco was given its name. Ford’s corporate history records the launch and the vehicle’s intended versatility.

A horse badge is documented on a particular Bronco configuration: the 1973 first-generation Ranger package had a bucking-horse logo on its spare-tire cover. That detail should not be generalized to every Bronco, nor does it prove the origin of the model name.

| Brand or model | Horse connection | Documented role and early use |
|---|---|---|
| Porsche | Horse from Stuttgart’s city seal, alongside regional heraldic details | Part of the company crest, first used on a 356 steering wheel in 1952. Porsche Newsroom |
| Ferrari | Emblem associated with aviator Francesco Baracca; adopted by Enzo Ferrari after Baracca’s family suggested it | Used on Scuderia Ferrari cars in 1932, with a yellow Modena-associated field. Ferrari |
| Mustang | Ford says Phil Clark designed the running-horse logo; Ford’s account offers horse and P-51 associations for the name | Model branding. The cited Ford account does not establish one exclusive cause for the name. Ford de México |
| Bronco | Ford’s launch description called it “another pony”; a bucking horse appeared on a specific Ranger-package spare-tire cover | The documented package emblem is from 1973, not evidence that every Bronco carried it or that it explains the name. Ford |
The contrast is the useful takeaway: a city’s heraldry supplied Porsche’s horse, an aviator’s emblem supplied Ferrari’s, and Ford’s horse imagery belongs to the branding of particular models. The resemblance among the badges does not make their histories interchangeable.
