A CR-V redesign can change what shoppers want, but the available figures do not show that a redesign alone makes the outgoing generation lose a fixed amount of value. To judge a specific CR-V, first identify whether its model year marks a new generation or a mid-cycle update, then compare vehicles with similar equipment, mileage, condition, location, sale channel, and valuation date.
Does a redesigned CR-V make the previous generation lose value?
Not automatically, and not by a reliably measurable amount established by the figures available here. A redesign may affect buyer interest, but the CR-V depreciation estimates cited below describe model-level value changes over time; they do not isolate the effect of a redesign from age, mileage, condition, trim, location, supply, or the wider used-car market.

That distinction matters when comparing, for example, a 2017 CR-V with a 2023 CR-V. The older vehicle has had six more model years to age, and the two examples may differ in equipment, mileage, history, market, and transaction type. A price gap between them is real, but it cannot tell you how much of that gap a redesign caused.
Use the timeline as context, not as a depreciation formula. It can help explain why two model years differ in features or appeal; it cannot, on its own, predict a particular vehicle’s trade-in offer or sale price.

Which model years belong to each CR-V generation?
These are U.S. model-year ranges listed by iSeeCars’ CR-V generation history. Model year is not the same as the date a particular vehicle was built or first sold.
| U.S. model years | Generation | Timeline context |
|---|---|---|
| 1997–2001 | First | First CR-V generation listed by iSeeCars. |
| 2002–2006 | Second | Second generation listed by iSeeCars. |
| 2007–2011 | Third | Third generation listed by iSeeCars. |
| 2012–2016 | Fourth | Fourth generation listed by iSeeCars. |
| 2017–2022 | Fifth | Honda described the 2017 CR-V as fully redesigned and reengineered. |
| 2023–2026 | Sixth / latest listed | Kelley Blue Book describes the 2023 CR-V as totally redesigned for 2023; iSeeCars lists the sixth generation through 2026. |
The 2017 and 2023 boundaries are supported by Honda and KBB descriptions as well as the generation listing. Honda’s CR-V press-kit archive calls the 2017 model fully redesigned and reengineered and identifies it as the fifth generation. KBB’s 2023 CR-V page calls that model totally redesigned. Those descriptions establish product-cycle milestones; they do not quantify a used-value penalty for the preceding models.
A redesign is not always a new generation
Honda’s press-kit archive also describes the 2015 model as receiving a “mid-model cycle redesign.” That wording is a useful reminder to distinguish a substantial update within a generation from the start of a new generation. When comparing listings, label the type of change rather than treating every redesign reference as a generation boundary.

The latest full redesign boundary established by these sources is 2023. They do not establish when a future CR-V redesign will happen, so a buyer or seller should not treat an estimated future date as confirmed.
What the available depreciation estimates show
iSeeCars’ CR-V resale page reports model-level depreciation estimates of 13.7% after three years, 41.2% after seven years, and 56% after ten years. The page was accessed October 9, 2026. These are estimates calculated using iSeeCars’ method, not guaranteed outcomes for every trim or a forecast for a particular owner.
| Vehicle age | iSeeCars CR-V estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Three years | 13.7% depreciated | A model-level estimate at that vehicle age, not a quote for a specific three-year-old CR-V. |
| Seven years | 41.2% depreciated | A model-level estimate; individual mileage, condition, configuration, and market can produce a different result. |
| Ten years | 56% depreciated | A model-level estimate over a longer ownership period, not a guaranteed resale percentage. |
iSeeCars says it calculates depreciation from the difference between new- and used-vehicle prices at different vehicle ages and accounts for automaker and vehicle segment. Read the figures as estimates produced by that method, rather than as a measured effect of the 2017 or 2023 redesign. See its CR-V resale-value estimates and methodology for the source’s definitions and current presentation.

For broad market context, Kelley Blue Book said in its 2026 Best Resale Value release that an average 2026 model-year vehicle retains about 45% of its value after five years. KBB describes the award residuals as projected future auction values for an average-condition vehicle with 75,000 miles after five years. This is not a CR-V-specific estimate and should not be used as one. The date, mileage assumption, condition assumption, and projection basis are part of what the number means. KBB’s 2026 Best Resale Value announcement provides that context.

A redesign and a price change may occur around the same time, but that does not establish that one caused the other. A fair analysis would need to separate the design change from the other differences that accumulate between model years and between individual cars. A simple comparison of a 2017 listing and a 2023 listing cannot do that.
- Age: A newer model year has had less time to depreciate. Compare cars of similar age or state clearly that age differs.
- Trim and configuration: Trim, powertrain, drivetrain, and options affect the vehicle being priced. Do not treat differently equipped CR-Vs as equivalent examples.
- Use and condition: Mileage, accident and title history, maintenance, and current condition all distinguish otherwise similar model years.
- Market: Location and valuation date matter. Used prices change, and the same vehicle can have different values in different markets.
- Transaction type: A dealer retail or fair-purchase estimate, a private-party value, and a trade-in estimate describe different sale situations and are not interchangeable.
- Metric: Dollars lost and percentage depreciated answer different questions. A percentage also depends on the starting value used as its denominator; use original MSRP only when the source and configuration make that comparison meaningful.
- Product-cycle status: Record whether the model year begins a generation or reflects a mid-cycle update. That may help explain differences in shopper appeal, but it does not quantify the resale effect.
KBB’s current pages for the 2023 CR-V and 2017 CR-V show model-year-specific value information, including purchase estimates and depreciation or resale/trade-in figures. KBB says values can vary with mileage, condition, location, and other factors, and that its displayed values are updated weekly. Treat each displayed value as a dated snapshot and preserve its type; a current estimate is not a permanent price or a causal comparison.

How to compare two CR-Vs fairly
Whether you are deciding what to buy, sell, or trade, make the comparison repeatable. Use the same valuation date and market where possible, and write down differences that you cannot control. A comparison with imperfect matches can still help, provided you do not attribute every difference to the redesign.
- Identify the exact model years and cycle status. Use the generation timeline above. Mark a new-generation start separately from a mid-cycle redesign, such as Honda’s description of the 2015 update.
- Match configuration as closely as possible. Compare trim, powertrain, drivetrain, and options. If one vehicle has different equipment, record that rather than assuming the values are directly comparable.
- Match use and condition. Note odometer reading, vehicle history, maintenance information, and condition. A model year alone does not establish that two cars have received similar use.
- Set the market and valuation date. Use the same geographic market and collect the estimates close together in time. For KBB values, note that the page is updated weekly; do not combine a current estimate with an old saved figure without labeling the dates.
- Choose one value type. Compare like with like: dealer purchase or retail estimate against the same type, private-party against private-party, and trade-in against trade-in. These amounts represent different transaction contexts.
- Choose the metric and baseline. For a buyer, the current dollars required may matter most. For depreciation, compare dollars lost or percentage lost over a defined period. If using percentage depreciation, record the starting value and its source rather than silently substituting MSRP for a different baseline.
- Report the remaining differences. State what could not be matched, then describe the result as an observed price or estimate difference—not as the amount caused by the redesign.
How to use KBB and iSeeCars figures without mixing them up
Both publishers can help frame a question, but their figures are not interchangeable. iSeeCars’ percentages are model-level estimates based on its comparison of new and used prices at different ages. KBB’s model pages provide current model-year values and depreciation information, while KBB’s 2026 award release uses projected five-year auction residuals under its stated assumptions. Different methods, definitions, periods, and value types should not be blended into one trendline.
For a specific listing, a current value estimate for the correct year and configuration is more useful than a broad model-level percentage, but even a listing estimate is not a guaranteed transaction price. KBB notes that values depend on mileage, condition, location, and other factors. Its depreciation estimate methodology compares values of similar vehicles over time and incorporates forecasts from Manheim auction data; KBB says the estimate is not a guarantee. Check the page’s displayed value type and date before relying on a number.

For a broad question about how the CR-V holds value over several years, iSeeCars’ age-based estimates offer a model-level frame. Do not use those percentages to predict a single vehicle’s exact selling price, and do not set them beside KBB values as though the two publishers measured the same thing in the same way.
What buyers and sellers should take from the timeline
If you are buying the outgoing generation
A newer generation may appeal more to a buyer who values its updated design or equipment, while a previous-generation vehicle may suit someone who prefers its price or configuration. The timeline can help you identify the product-cycle change, but the sources do not show a fixed discount that every outgoing CR-V receives because a redesign arrived. Compare actual examples in your market and inspect condition and history rather than assuming the generation label sets the price.
If you are selling or trading in
Do not price a CR-V by applying a generic redesign deduction. Start with its exact model year, trim, mileage, condition, location, and intended sale channel, then compare estimates of the same value type. A trade-in estimate and a private-party estimate can differ because they represent different transactions; neither should be substituted for the other without explanation.
If you are forecasting depreciation
Set the ownership period and starting value first. Then use a consistent source and method for the estimate, label the date and assumptions, and treat a forecast as an estimate rather than a promise. For an individual CR-V, the condition and configuration can matter more to the estimate than a broad generation boundary, and the cited model-level figures cannot quantify the effect of a future redesign.
What the evidence does not establish
The cited sources establish CR-V generation ranges, Honda’s descriptions of the 2015 and 2017 product-cycle changes, KBB’s characterization of the 2023 model, and resale or depreciation estimates under publisher-specific methods. They do not provide a controlled comparison of used CR-V prices immediately before and after a redesign announcement, nor a CR-V-specific causal estimate that separates redesign effects from age, equipment, condition, supply, demand, and market movements.
That limit does not make the timeline irrelevant. It means the most accurate answer is narrower: a redesign is a useful marker for organizing comparisons and may be one factor in shopper demand, but no particular resale penalty or premium can be assigned to it from the estimates above. Current values should be reported with their source, date, geography, and value type, and any future redesign timing should be treated as unknown unless Honda confirms it.
