It is a feature of specific serializer/deserializer parts—not of every GMSL link—and it protects content on that link rather than every data path or function in a vehicle.
What HDCP protects on a GMSL link
High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) adds content protection to a display transport. Under the Digital Content Protection, LLC HDCP on GMSL Specification Revision 2.3, an upstream transmitter sends encrypted audiovisual content to downstream HDCP receiver(s). A receiver authenticates to its immediate upstream connection; it can render the content or operate as a repeater that forwards it to further receivers. The system can also revoke receivers that DCP determines are invalid.
The specification addresses protected content crossing the GMSL-based wired display link. It does not define system discovery, association, setup, or teardown, and it does not claim to secure every vehicle network, camera-control signal, or other in-car function.
Why the GMSL and HDCP versions matter
The DCP specification is Revision 2.3, dated October 20, 2022, and maps HDCP 2.3 to GMSL protocol version 2 and later. That boundary should not be read as evidence that an older GMSL product supports HDCP 2.3: check the part’s own datasheet and documented pairing. The specification is a technical standard, not jurisdiction-specific consumer guidance.

Examples of HDCP-capable GMSL parts
Analog Devices lists several Maxim-origin parts with HDCP-related functions. Their features differ, so “GMSL chipset” alone is not enough to establish compatibility or suitability.
| Part | Documented role and details | Lifecycle or selection caveat |
|---|---|---|
| MAX9263/MAX9264 | Serializer/deserializer chipset with HDCP encryption of video and audio. The vendor lists a pixel clock up to 104 MHz; I²S audio up to 192 kHz and 32-bit sample depth; and embedded full-duplex UART control from 9.6 kbps to 1 Mbps. Listed applications include automotive navigation, megapixel camera systems, and rear-seat infotainment. | The product page labels it “LAST TIME BUY.” The figures and applications apply to this specific chipset. |
| MAX9266 | HDCP GMSL deserializer that decrypts protected content from a compatible HDCP GMSL serializer. The vendor lists 2.5 Gbps payload (3.125 Gbps with overhead), secure on-chip preprogrammed HDCP keys, and an operating temperature range of −40°C to +105°C. Listed applications include navigation and rear-seat infotainment. | The product page labels it “LAST TIME BUY.” It must be paired with a compatible HDCP serializer. |
| MAX9280A | HDCP content-protection variant in the MAX9276A family, whose input options include coax or shielded twisted pair. The vendor distinguishes the MAX9280A as the HDCP version while describing the MAX9276A as otherwise sharing the family description. | The MAX9276A page says “NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW DESIGNS.” Verify MAX9280A’s specific requirements, lifecycle, and datasheet before selection. |
How to assess a chipset for a vehicle display design
- Confirm the exact part and pairing. Identify whether the component is a serializer, deserializer, or chipset, then verify that the intended upstream and downstream parts support HDCP together. Do not infer HDCP from GMSL branding alone.
- Match protection and transport generations. Check the product documentation for its HDCP revision and GMSL version. The DCP Revision 2.3 mapping covers GMSL 2 and later; an older part needs its own documented support.
- Check signal and interface requirements. Compare the specific design’s video timing, audio format, control interface, and throughput needs with the part’s documented limits. For example, the MAX9263/MAX9264 and MAX9266 figures above describe different roles and are not interchangeable performance claims.
- Verify medium and topology. Confirm the required cable medium and whether the design uses a direct receiver or repeater topology. The MAX9280A family description includes coax and shielded-twisted-pair inputs; check the exact device documentation for the chosen configuration.
- Check lifecycle and supply before design-in. The cited MAX9263/MAX9264 and MAX9266 pages show “LAST TIME BUY,” while the MAX9276A page shows “NOT RECOMMENDED FOR NEW DESIGNS.” Confirm current lifecycle, compatibility, authorized sourcing, and stock with the vendor.
What the automotive application examples establish
Vendor materials list navigation, rear-seat infotainment, and megapixel camera systems as application contexts for certain parts. These are intended-use examples; they do not identify specific production vehicles or prove that a particular model uses HDCP over GMSL. No market-size, adoption, or vehicle-deployment statistic is established by the cited specification and product pages.
