Grid-scale battery storage helps Malaysia’s electricity grid by taking in electricity when it is available, holding it, and returning it later—or by providing support to help regulate grid voltage and frequency. It is a utility asset, not simply a larger version of a household battery. Its two key ratings describe different things: megawatts (MW) measure how quickly it can deliver or absorb power, while megawatt-hours (MWh) measure how much energy it can store.
At Santong in Terengganu, TNB’s 100 MW/400 MWh system entered commercial operation in April 2026. The ratings imply four hours of output at full rated power by arithmetic, not a guarantee of four hours in every operating situation. Separately, Malaysia’s MyBeST programme is advancing four grid-connected projects, each rated at 100 MW/400 MWh, with commissioning reported as targeted for 2027.

What a grid-scale battery does
A grid-scale battery energy storage system, or BESS, stores electricity so it can be used at another time or provide services to the electricity network. It connects to the grid through power-conversion equipment and is operated as part of the wider electricity system. Unlike a power station that produces primary energy from a fuel or other energy source, a battery returns electricity that was supplied to it earlier. Charging and discharging involve conversion losses, so storage shifts energy in time rather than creating a net supply of energy.

The familiar “power bank” comparison is useful for understanding the basic idea: charge when there is electricity to store, then discharge when it is useful. Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof used that analogy when discussing Santong, describing BESS as a large-scale “power bank” capable of storing excess electricity and releasing it when required. The analogy has limits: a grid battery is a controlled utility installation, and its role can include supporting the network as well as moving energy from one time to another.

How charging, storage and discharge work
1. Charge when scheduled
A BESS draws electricity from the connected grid or a generation source when charging is scheduled. The particular source and timing depend on how the system is operated. The general purpose is to make electricity available later, not to imply that every battery charges only from renewables or only when electricity is otherwise unused.
2. Hold energy in battery cells
Within the installation, battery cells store energy chemically. A utility BESS is more than cells: the overall system includes battery modules and controls, safety systems, and equipment to convert electricity between the battery and the grid. The detailed configuration and battery chemistry of the Malaysian installations described here have not been established by the cited project information, so it would be misleading to assign them a particular cell type or engineering layout.
3. Return electricity through inverters
Battery cells produce direct current (DC), while the electricity grid uses alternating current (AC). Inverters convert the battery’s output into grid-compatible AC during discharge. They also form part of the equipment through which the system interacts with the grid. An operator can dispatch the BESS when its output is useful, subject to its available stored energy, power rating and operating conditions.

4. Provide energy or grid support
Discharging can move available energy from one period to another. A BESS can also be designed to help with grid services such as stability support. TNB describes its utility BESS projects as supporting reliability, stability and renewable integration. For Santong specifically, the project is described as using grid-forming technology and helping regulate voltage and frequency. Those descriptions explain intended functions; they are not published measurements of response time or proof of a particular system-wide outcome.

How to read MW and MWh
MW and MWh are related but not interchangeable. MW is a rate of power: it describes how much power the system can deliver or absorb at a given time. MWh is an amount of energy: it describes stored energy capacity. A battery can have a high power rating but a relatively short duration, or a given power rating backed by more stored energy for longer discharge.
For Santong, dividing the published 400 MWh energy capacity by its 100 MW rated power gives four hours (400 MWh ÷ 100 MW). This is a calculation from the stated ratings, not a reported test result. It means four hours at full rated output in an idealized rating-based calculation. It does not establish that the system will always discharge at 100 MW for four hours: actual operation depends on available charge, dispatch, system limits and other conditions. Nor does the rating mean the installation can supply every load on the grid.

How battery storage can help Malaysia’s grid
Renewable integration and energy shifting
Wind and solar output varies with available natural conditions, while electricity demand and grid needs change over time. A battery can absorb electricity when it is available and discharge later, shifting some energy across time. This is the basic mechanism behind the view that storage can help accommodate more renewable generation. The Energy Commission says the MyBeST programme is intended to support grid stability and renewable integration, and TNB describes BESS as a way to accommodate increasing solar capacity while maintaining grid security and reliability.

Voltage and frequency support
Voltage and frequency are important characteristics of an electricity system. Santong is reported to use grid-forming technology and to help regulate both. TNB’s 2025 integrated annual report describes its advanced inverters as establishing and regulating grid voltage and frequency. This identifies a capability and stated role; it does not, on its own, provide measured response times or demonstrate how much system-wide reliability improved after the installation began operating.
Grid-forming describes the system’s role in establishing or regulating electrical conditions, rather than simply returning energy to the grid. The available project descriptions do not provide enough technical detail to explain Santong’s control settings, operating modes or engineering configuration. Claims about precise response speed or performance in particular grid events would therefore go beyond what those descriptions establish.
Local support on distribution networks
Battery projects can also be smaller and connected to distribution networks, where the purpose may be local rather than transmission-scale. TNB describes community lithium-ion storage installations intended to reduce peak loads on transformers and smooth power fluctuations. That function differs in scale and use from Santong’s 100 MW/400 MWh grid-connected system. A comparison should account for the connection point and intended service, not just the fact that both installations store electricity.
Malaysia’s projects: Santong and MyBeST
Santong and MyBeST are distinct developments. Santong is a TNB system in Terengganu that is reported to have entered commercial operation in April 2026. MyBeST is an Energy Commission procurement programme for four separate grid-connected BESS projects in Peninsular Malaysia. Keeping those statuses separate matters: an operating project is not one of the four projects merely because its rating matches the capacity specified for each MyBeST installation.

The MyBeST dates reflect different stages of the programme: the initial target announced in 2024 and the later commissioning target reported with the 2025 shortlisted-bidders statement. The latter reported target is 2027. It should not be described as proof that the projects have already been commissioned.
For Santong, Bernama’s 18 May 2026 account reported an expected lifespan of up to 15 years, attributing the statement to the minister. That is a reported expectation, not a measured service-life result. TNB’s 2025 integrated annual report records the installation’s commercial operation in April 2026; Bernama gives the specific official start date as 17 April 2026.
The Energy Commission’s 2023 publication record dates the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) to 30 August 2023. TNB describes the national target as approximately 70% renewable energy capacity by 2050. The metric is installed capacity; it is not a claim that renewables will supply 70% of electricity generated.

What the published figures do—and do not—show
Published capacity and project status are useful for understanding what Malaysia is building, but they are not a substitute for operating data. The figures establish the stated power and energy ratings, the announced MyBeST investment estimate, Santong’s reported cost and operating date, and the programme’s reported commissioning target. They do not establish a measured round-trip efficiency, grid-wide cost savings, emissions reductions or comparative performance against other grid resources.

For example, the four-hour figure for Santong follows directly from dividing 400 MWh by 100 MW. It is not evidence that the battery delivered four hours at full output during a particular event. Similarly, the RM2.8 billion programme estimate announced in 2024 and Bernama’s report of about RM380 million for Santong refer to different projects and are not a like-for-like cost comparison. The available information does not provide a common basis for judging cost per unit of storage, realised expenditure or value delivered.
When assessing a BESS project, ask what it is rated to deliver (MW), how much energy it stores (MWh), where and how it connects, what services it is intended to provide, and whether it is proposed, under procurement, under construction or operating. Those distinctions make a more useful comparison than treating every battery installation as interchangeable.
Why the distinction matters for electricity customers
Storage can help manage when electricity is available and can provide specified forms of network support, but it is one part of an electricity system that also includes generation, transmission, distribution and grid operations. A battery does not remove the need for energy sources; it can return energy supplied to it earlier, after conversion losses. Whether a particular BESS reduces pressure on the system or supports renewable integration depends on how it is used and on the conditions it serves.

Ratings explain the planned scale; status and operating evidence explain what is actually available. The sources cited here do not establish measured system-wide savings or outcomes beyond those stated project roles.
