GPX Stream is the track-driving system behind the idea that a coach need not ride in the passenger seat. It combines an in-car camera view, live telemetry, radio coaching and post-session review so an instructor can watch and advise from the pit wall. That makes it an alternative for some track sessions—not a replacement for an instructor in ordinary road-driving lessons.

How GPX Stream remote coaching works

Road & Track’s October 6, 2026 feature describes a setup that gives a coach a view into the car and a way to communicate while the driver is on track. The system’s creator, racer and entrepreneur Jeff Segal, describes the aim as letting a coach see “things through a lens you don’t have inside a car.”

  • In-car view: A camera sends the coach a driver’s-eye view.
  • Live telemetry: The coach can follow performance data alongside the video.
  • Radio guidance: The coach speaks to the driver during the session.
  • Session review: Video and telemetry can be reviewed together afterward to discuss specific parts of a lap.

The feature traces the concept to a 2016 Skype call, when a phone was attached to the rear window of a Ferrari. It says a Sony 5G dual-SIM transmitter introduced in 2024 brought latency down to “barely 0.5 second.” That latency is Road & Track’s description, not an independently verified specification; actual performance may depend on equipment and conditions.

What the track demonstration showed

In the feature’s example, coach Rod MacLeod worked remotely while the writer drove a BMW M2 CS at the Concours Club near Miami, on its 2.0-mile circuit. MacLeod gave instructions by radio; after a dozen laps, he and the driver reviewed the session’s video and telemetry, concentrating on three corners. The writer reported improving by 1.5 seconds.

Rugged Radios H41 Behind-the-Head Racing & Industrial Headset
  • DYNAMIC MICROPHONE: The included adjustable dynamic noise canceling microphone allows for clear transmission to others even in the harshest conditions.
  • ENHANCED HEARING PROTECTION: Boasting a rating of 24 decibels NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) hearing protection makes this headset suitable for use in loud noise environments.
  • LISTEN TO YOUR FAVORITE AUDIO: A built in 3.5 mm jack for audio input allows for usage with various devices, such as a cell phone, race receiver, or scanner.
  • COMPATIBILITY: 5 pin universal radio port built in for compatibility with 2 way radios such as Rugged Radios, Baofeng, Motorola, Kenwood, HYT, TYT, and more

That result comes from one reported session, not a controlled comparison. It does not establish a typical time gain or show that remote coaching will improve every driver’s performance.

Why coach from the pit wall?

Moving the instructor out of the passenger seat changes what the coach can do and what the driver experiences. Road & Track presents several possible advantages, but does not quantify their effects:

  • ADD TO MORE HEADSETS: Easily add your H80 headsets to other H80s or Racing Electronics linkable headsets. Simply plug in the 3 pin cable to the other headset, and begin having fun!

  • PUSH TO TALK: Simply press the push-to-talk button built into the right ear cup for seamless communication with your group. Flick the isolate toggle switch to quickly shut off the incoming 3.5 mm audio, while still allowing for conversation!
  • NOISE REDUCTION: With a 24 dB Noise Reduction Rating, you can count on being able to hear all communication within your group, as well as the incoming scanner traffic, while blocking out the outside noise.
  • PREMIER COMFORT: Headsets come with pre-installed gel ear seals for all-day comfort, and ear covers give pillow like touch to your ears. A stainless steel headband provides a lightweight addition.
  • A different perspective: The coach can observe video and telemetry from outside the car rather than relying only on the passenger-seat view.
  • No instructor passenger weight: The coach is not riding in the car, so that passenger weight is absent.
  • Radio-coordinated passes: The feature says a coach can help coordinate safer passes by radio; it does not provide measured safety outcomes.
  • Potentially more efficient sessions: Remote instruction could help mixed-skill drivers share track time, according to the feature.

There is a human trade-off, too. MacLeod says some coaches are uncomfortable in the passenger seat, while some novice drivers may find an instructor’s presence reassuring. Remote coaching is therefore an option for particular drivers and sessions, not a universal replacement for in-car instruction.

Where this tech fits—and where it does not

GPX Stream is described as a specialized track-driving coaching system. The feature does not establish that it is suitable for ordinary learner-driver lessons, nor does it provide evidence that removing the instructor from the car makes a session safer overall. Track rules, driver experience, communications and the venue’s procedures still matter.

  • 3.5mm Input Aux Port For Music & Scanners

Segal says the system can give a driver “a coach, a spotter, a crew chief, or an engineer.” That describes the range of roles remote eyes and communication might support; it is not evidence that one setup replaces every form of on-track instruction.
