“GM hybrid” does not describe one powertrain. A conventional hybrid combines a gasoline engine, electric motor and battery but cannot be charged from a wall outlet; a plug-in hybrid adds external charging and typically has a larger battery that can support electric-only driving. General Motors has used more than one hybrid approach: eAssist and the Chevrolet Volt are distinct examples, and the Volt is a historical plug-in example rather than a description of every GM hybrid.
What makes a vehicle a hybrid?
A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) pairs an internal-combustion engine with one or more electric motors and a battery. The engine uses fuel; the motor can help propel the vehicle; and the battery stores electrical energy for the motor. In a conventional HEV, the battery is replenished onboard rather than by plugging the vehicle into an external electricity source. The U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center states that “An HEV cannot plug in to off-board sources of electricity to charge the battery.”

That definition matters because “hybrid” is sometimes used loosely to refer to any vehicle with both an engine and an electric motor. The ability to plug in is a separate distinction. An HEV and a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) share the broad idea of combining electric and combustion power, but they do not have the same charging arrangement or necessarily the same electric-driving capability.

The U.S. Department of Energy distinguishes mild hybrids from full hybrids. A mild hybrid uses electric assistance and may shut off its engine when the vehicle stops, but its electric system does not provide the same kind of short-distance or low-speed electric driving associated with a full hybrid. A full hybrid has a larger battery and motor, allowing electric power to move the vehicle in some conditions. Both remain conventional HEVs if they cannot be charged from an external source.

Those labels describe the extent of electric assistance, not whether the vehicle is a plug-in. A reader comparing vehicles should check the particular vehicle’s charging capability and powertrain rather than infer either from the word “hybrid.”
How the engine, motor and battery work together
The engine supplies power using fuel. The electric motor can assist propulsion, and depending on the design and operating conditions, may also move the vehicle. The battery stores electricity for the motor. The system coordinates these components so that the engine, motor or both can contribute as the vehicle operates. The exact division of work differs between designs, so there is no single operating sequence that applies to every GM hybrid.
Regenerative braking recovers some energy
When a vehicle slows, some of its motion would ordinarily be lost as heat through braking. In regenerative braking, the electric motor operates as a generator and recovers some of that energy as electricity for the battery. This is one way a non-plug-in HEV replenishes its battery while driving. Regeneration does not mean the vehicle creates energy: it captures some energy that would otherwise be dissipated during braking.

A PHEV can also use regenerative braking. Its battery may additionally be charged from an external electrical source and, in some designs, by the engine. The presence of regenerative braking therefore does not tell you whether a vehicle plugs in; both conventional hybrids and PHEVs can recover braking energy.
What happens when the battery has less charge?
For a conventional HEV, the battery is charged onboard, including through regenerative braking; there is no wall-outlet charging step. A PHEV can begin with electricity supplied by a charger, but it also has a combustion engine. When the battery charge is low or driving conditions call for it, the engine can contribute or take over according to that vehicle’s design. The precise transitions and controls are model-specific, and the broad category alone does not establish when or how they occur.
How a plug-in hybrid differs from a conventional hybrid
A PHEV combines a combustion engine and electric motor with a battery that can be charged from an external electrical source. It can also recover braking energy and, in some designs, use the engine to generate electricity. Its typically larger battery can allow electric-only driving. A conventional HEV has no external charging connection and relies on onboard energy recovery and the engine to replenish its battery.

Series and parallel describe power flow, not plug capability
“Series” and “parallel” explain how engine and motor power can reach the wheels. They are not synonyms for “hybrid” and “plug-in hybrid.” Plug capability is about whether the battery can take electricity from an external source; series and parallel describe the powertrain’s arrangement.
- Parallel: The engine and electric motor can both mechanically drive the wheels.
- Series: The motor drives the wheels while the engine generates electricity.
- Combined arrangements: Some PHEVs can use both arrangements under different conditions.
Consequently, learning that a vehicle is a PHEV does not, by itself, tell you whether its engine can mechanically drive the wheels. Nor does learning that a vehicle uses a series layout tell you whether it can plug in. Those questions require information about the specific model and powertrain.

GM examples: eAssist and the Chevrolet Volt
GM’s examples illustrate why the company name alone is not enough to identify one hybrid design. eAssist and the Chevrolet Volt represent different approaches. They should be treated as historical examples, not evidence that every GM hybrid operates in the same way or that either example is currently offered in a particular market.
eAssist: an assisted hybrid system
General Motors China’s 2014 corporate social responsibility report described eAssist as a hybrid propulsion system using an advanced lithium-ion battery and a 15-kW motor-generator. The report said eAssist delivered 20 percent fuel savings compared with conventional vehicles of the same class. That is a company-reported figure from 2014, not a current, independently established result for all eAssist vehicles, every driving situation, or GM hybrids generally. The report does not support applying the percentage to other models or years.

The reported motor-generator and battery identify components of that system, but the figures alone do not establish a vehicle’s electric-only range, current fuel economy, or present-day availability. Those details depend on the precise vehicle and year.

Chevrolet Volt: a historical extended-range plug-in example
GM’s technical paper discusses the Volt in the extended-range electric vehicle category. GM China’s 2014 report describes a lithium-ion battery and electric drive, with a gasoline-powered generator providing additional range. This makes the Volt useful as a historical example of GM’s plug-in approach: it is not a template for conventional non-plug-in hybrids such as the broad HEV category, nor proof that every PHEV uses the same power flow.
The available description does not identify a specific Volt model year or establish current U.S. availability. Any model-level comparison needs the exact year and powertrain; the category-level description should not be mistaken for a specification sheet.
How to compare two specific GM hybrid vehicles
Start with the exact model year and powertrain designation. A badge or general “hybrid” label is not enough to determine charging, wheel-drive arrangement, or electric capability. Use the following checks to make a meaningful comparison:
- Check whether it plugs in. Confirm that the exact vehicle has external charging capability. If it cannot be charged from an external source, it is not a PHEV.
- Check the battery and electric-driving capability. Compare the exact model-year specifications for battery size and whether electric-only driving is supported. Do not infer a range or battery capacity from the broad hybrid label.
- Find out how power reaches the wheels. Determine whether the engine and motor can each mechanically drive the wheels, whether the motor drives them while the engine generates electricity, or whether the design can use more than one arrangement.
- Account for charging habits and travel distance. For a PHEV, consider how far you drive between charges and whether you can plug in regularly. Those factors affect how much of its use can draw on externally supplied electricity and therefore its real-world fuel use.
- Keep model year attached to every figure. Use year-specific information for performance, fuel economy, battery details and availability. A historical GM example or a company-reported figure from 2014 cannot establish a current specification.
These checks also help prevent a misleading comparison between unlike systems. A conventional HEV and a PHEV may both have a gasoline engine, motor, battery and regenerative braking, but only the latter adds external charging. Two PHEVs can still differ in how the engine and motor transmit power and in the conditions under which the engine operates.
What is established—and what is not—about current GM offerings
The historical descriptions of eAssist and the Volt establish that GM has used more than one hybrid approach. They do not establish which GM hybrid models are currently sold in the United States, nor do they establish current fuel economy, electric range, emissions or pricing for any GM model. For a current purchase or ownership decision, verify the exact vehicle’s model year, powertrain and market availability using current model-specific information; do not treat a historical example as an active product listing.
