Bathurst 1000 fuel strategy is a balance between the fuel a car may carry, how much it will use over each stint, and the time and track position gained or lost by stopping. Teams plan when to pit, how much fuel to add, and how driver changes fit into the schedule. A lead on the road is not a guarantee of a finish: the 2026 winner passed the race leader after that car ran out of fuel on the final lap.
What fuel strategy has to solve
A team needs enough fuel to cover every lap, but it cannot plan in isolation from the rest of the race. The fuel-system capacity sets a ceiling on how much fuel the car can carry. How much fuel can a Bathurst car carry?
For the 2026 championship, Supercars lists different fuel-system capacities for Sprint Cup rounds and the Ryco Enduro Cup and Finals. The endurance category includes the Bathurst 1000. These are maximum capacities, not instructions about how much fuel a team must load or a promise about how far a full car can travel.

The 2025 checking-vessel figure and the 2026 championship capacity figure are not interchangeable descriptions of one procedure. The first is an approximate vessel volume in a dated event document; the second is a season-level capacity summary. The 2025 event document does not establish what every 2026 Bathurst refuelling or checking procedure requires. For a particular edition, the applicable event supplementary regulations matter.
A capacity limit is only one input into the fuel plan. It does not say how much fuel a car uses per lap, account for changing race conditions, or tell a team how many stops it should make. Supercars has described the reduced Enduro Cup capacity as a way to shorten stints and create more strategic choices, rather than as a fixed recipe for the race.
How teams choose when to stop
A pit window is a planned period in which a team expects to stop, rather than a universal lap number shared by the field. The team weighs the fuel remaining and the laps still to cover against the track position it may gain or surrender by pitting at that moment.

Fuel remaining and laps to go
The basic question is whether the car can safely cover the planned distance to its next stop, with a suitable margin, and whether the next planned fuel load can cover the following stint. A team must account for the whole route to the finish, not just whether the current stint can be extended. Adding too little can turn a time-saving stop into a much larger loss if the car has to slow, pit again, or cannot reach the flag.
The amount needed depends on the team’s consumption estimate and its plan for the remaining laps. The official figures cited here do not supply a general consumption rate or a public team-by-team fuel calculation, so an exact litres-per-lap answer or universal fuel margin cannot be given.
Stop time and track position
Every stop costs time. Pitting early may protect against running low or allow the team to pursue a track-position opportunity. But a car may rejoin behind rivals, encounter traffic, or lose ground to cars that stay out. Extending a stint can preserve position for a while, but it is only useful if the fuel plan still covers the distance and the team accepts the risks of waiting.

Teams therefore assess more than the amount of fuel to add. The relevant comparisons include planned stint length, pit-window timing, the driver’s remaining required time, traffic, race position, likely caution timing, and the fuel margin for the closing laps. The best option can change as the race unfolds; there is no single stop schedule that can be read off the capacity figure.

Starting fuel and each refill
Fuel planning begins before the first stop: teams choose a starting volume and decide what amount to add later. Supercars’ description of the 2025 Sprint Cup churn rules discussed teams choosing both starting volume and the amount added at two pit stops. Endurance events used towers. That 2025 description provides context for how fuel choices can be structured under those rules; it should not be used as a substitute for the detailed procedure in a different season’s event regulations.
At each stop, the team’s decision is connected to the next planned stint and the rest of the race. Adding more fuel may support a longer stint, but the race still has to be judged as a whole: the next stop, driver allocation, and likely position after the stop all matter. The sources do not provide comparable team plans or a universal amount to add.
How driver changes shape the plan
Bathurst is an endurance race, so fuel stops and driver stints have to be planned together. A driver may need to complete a minimum share of driving time, which constrains how the team allocates the available stints. A fuel plan that looks convenient in isolation may not fit the team’s driver requirements.

Supercars reported that the 2025 enduros required each driver to complete at least 37% of the driving time, which meant at least 60 laps at Bathurst. This is a 2025 figure, not a claim about the requirements for every future edition. The 2026 championship summary described the rule book as stable, but the specific 2026 Bathurst event regulations were not verified here; consult that year’s event documents before treating the 60-lap minimum as current.

In practical terms, the team has to coordinate the expected length of each stint with which driver is in the car and how much driving time each has completed. A revised pit window can affect that allocation. Strategy is therefore a shared schedule of fuel loads, stops, and driver time—not merely a calculation of how far the fuel will last.
What a safety car changes—and what it does not
A safety car changes the pace of the race and can shift the value of a pit stop. It may change when teams expect to stop or how they assess track position. But it does not erase the remaining distance: the car still has to complete all the laps to the finish, and the team still needs enough fuel for them.
That distinction mattered at Bathurst in 2026. The race ended with a three-lap green-flag run after the late Safety Car. A caution can alter the situation, but it cannot guarantee that any particular car has saved enough fuel to finish. Teams have to manage the remaining-lap requirement rather than assume a neutralised period makes the existing fuel plan sufficient.
Why the 2026 Bathurst leader ran out
Team 18’s No. 18 DEWALT Camaro, driven by Anton De Pasquale and Lee Holdsworth, was leading on strategy before it ran out of fuel on the final lap. In a statement reproduced by Supercars on 13 October 2026, team owner Charlie Schwerkolt said an issue in the team’s fuel-strategy software meant the final fuel fill was less than the amount required to finish. The team said the issue had been resolved.

Supercars’ account of the finish describes Brodie Kostecki passing De Pasquale as the Camaro stopped. The reported failure illustrates why a car’s position and the correctness of its fuel plan are separate things: the No. 18 could be leading yet still lack the fuel required for the final lap. The statement does not quantify the shortfall in litres or seconds, so neither figure can be reliably stated.
The episode also shows why the final fill deserves careful attention. The team attributed the shortage to a software issue affecting the calculation of the amount required, not to a general rule that leaders should stop at a particular time. One team’s reported failure is not evidence of a general failure rate or of how other teams calculate their fuel loads.
How to read a Bathurst fuel-strategy call
When a team pits, stays out, or adds a particular amount, the move only makes sense in relation to its full plan. A useful way to assess the decision is to ask:

- How much fuel does the team expect to need for the next stint and the remaining race, and how does that compare with the permitted capacity?
- What stint length and pit window is it targeting, and what track position might it gain or lose by stopping then?
- Does the timing fit the driver’s required allocation and the team’s planned driver changes?
- How might traffic, a caution, or a change in race position alter the value of stopping now versus extending the stint?
- Is there a sufficient margin for the closing laps, including a return to green-flag racing?
These questions explain the trade-offs without pretending that a spectator can calculate a private team’s fuel budget from the public capacity alone. Fuel consumption, team calculations, and strategy plans are not provided as comparable figures in the official information cited for this explanation. A claim that a specific team should have made a specific stop, or could have finished on a particular load, needs evidence beyond the capacity limit and the race result.
Why there is no fixed number of fuel stops
There is no supported universal answer to “How many times do Bathurst cars stop for fuel?” A stop count depends on the stint plan, the amount carried and added, the driver schedule, and how the race develops. A team that changes its timing in response to traffic or a caution may no longer follow its original windows. The 2025 Sprint Cup account of two fuel additions under churn rules is not a fixed Bathurst stop count, and it does not establish a standard endurance-race schedule.
For the same reason, the capacity figures cannot be converted into a universal number of laps per tank. To make that calculation, a reader would need a relevant consumption rate and assumptions about the car’s race conditions and strategy. Those figures are not established here.
