Ford is addressing several distinct EcoBoost problems through vehicle-specific repairs, a safety recall, and diagnostic service procedures—not through one fix for every EcoBoost engine. The documented issues include coolant intrusion in certain older 1.5L Fusion and Escape models, an oil-pump belt and tensioner recall for specified 1.0L automatic-transmission vehicles, a separate coolant-passage concern in some newer 1.5L Escapes, and a fuel-injection-pump leak condition in certain newer vehicles. Which response applies depends on the vehicle’s model, engine, build date, transmission, symptoms, and VIN.
What Ford is doing about EcoBoost problems
“EcoBoost engine failure” is an umbrella description, not the name of one defect affecting every engine in the family. Ford’s documents describe different causes, affected applications, and remedies. Some are safety recalls; others are technical service communications describing how technicians should diagnose and repair a condition.
The documented responses range from replacing a short block and head gasket in a defined older 1.5L application to inspecting or replacing oil-pump components under a 1.0L recall. Other service messages direct technicians to diagnose cooling-system symptoms or investigate a possible fuel leak into the engine oil. None of these documents establishes a failure rate for EcoBoost engines as a whole.
Which EcoBoost issues are documented?
| Issue and source | Vehicles covered | Reported condition | Ford’s stated response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Older 1.5L coolant intrusion; Ford TSB 19-2375, December 10, 2019 | Certain 2014–2019 Fusion vehicles built on or before June 10, 2019, and certain 2017–2019 Escape vehicles built on or before April 8, 2019; 1.5L EcoBoost | Low coolant, white exhaust smoke, rough running, and specified powertrain diagnostic codes; coolant may be entering a cylinder | Replace the short block and head gasket, subject to the bulletin’s application and diagnostic criteria |
| 1.0L oil-pump belt and tensioner; Ford Safety Recall 23S64 Supplement #1, October 24, 2024 | Specified EcoSport, Focus, and Fiesta vehicles with a 1.0L EcoBoost and automatic transmission; confirm a specific vehicle’s eligibility by VIN | The tensioner arm may fracture or separate, and/or the oil-pump drive belt may degrade and shed material, causing loss of oil pressure. Ford warns of possible engine damage or seizure, loss of motive power, and loss of mechanical vacuum-pump braking assist. | Ford described an interim repair for an engine already failed in a manner related to a broken belt or tensioner. It said the updated belt and tensioner would be replaced when remedy parts became available. |
| Newer 1.5L Escape coolant-passage concern; Ford SSM 54114 | Certain 2023–2025 Escape vehicles with a 1.5L EcoBoost built on or before September 16, 2024 | Engine-coolant over-temperature warning and specified codes during hard acceleration or high load; machining chips in the cylinder head may block a coolant passage near the cylinder-head temperature sensor port | Follow the diagnostic and flushing procedure; replace the cylinder head if the concern persists |
| Fuel-injection-pump leak; Ford SSM 54138 | Some 2024–2025 F-150, Expedition/Navigator, Escape/Corsair, Bronco, Explorer, Mustang, and Maverick vehicles with 1.5L, 2.0L, 2.3L, or 3.5L EcoBoost engines built from October 1, 2024, through May 31, 2025 | Possible extended cranking, fuel odor in engine oil, and/or a high oil level; an internal pump leak may allow fuel into the crankcase and reduce fuel pressure | Use the vehicle-specific service procedure to diagnose the condition; the cited message describes the issue rather than a universal EcoBoost repair |
Older 1.5L Fusion and Escape: coolant intrusion
Ford TSB 19-2375 ties a particular combination of vehicle application, build date, symptoms, and diagnostic codes to possible coolant intrusion into a cylinder. Its stated repair is replacement of the short block and head gasket. That recommendation is not a blanket instruction for all 1.5L engines, all model years, or every vehicle that loses coolant.

Because the prescribed repair involves a major engine component, an engine-family label or symptom checklist is not enough to choose parts. Have a qualified technician confirm that the vehicle and diagnosis meet the bulletin’s criteria before considering a short block or other replacement component.
Specified 1.0L automatic vehicles: oil-pump belt and tensioner recall
Recall 23S64 Supplement #1 describes a possible failure of the oil-pump belt or tensioner that can lead to loss of oil pressure. Ford’s stated risks include engine damage or seizure and loss of motive power; the document also warns that braking assist from the mechanical vacuum pump could be lost. The remedy described in the supplement distinguishes between an interim repair for certain already-failed engines and replacement of the updated belt and tensioner when remedy parts become available.

Ford listed 136,135 affected U.S. vehicles in the recall document. That is the campaign’s U.S. vehicle population, not a count of confirmed failures. A separate Transport Canada recall record covers certain listed vehicles in Canada and says dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the oil-pump belt tensioner assembly and oil-pump belt. The Canadian list and scope are jurisdiction-specific; check the record for the vehicle’s market rather than combining it with the U.S. campaign.
Newer 1.5L Escape: coolant passage blocked by machining chips
SSM 54114 describes a different cooling-system concern from the older coolant-intrusion bulletin. In the covered Escape vehicles, machining chips trapped in the cylinder head may obstruct a coolant passage near the cylinder-head temperature sensor port. Ford’s procedure calls for diagnosis and flushing, with cylinder-head replacement if the condition persists. Do not assume that this message’s cause or repair applies to the older Fusion and Escape coolant-intrusion cases.

Several newer models: possible fuel in the engine oil
SSM 54138 concerns a possible internal fuel-injection-pump leak in certain vehicles built during the specified October 2024–May 2025 window. Fuel entering the crankcase may reduce fuel pressure; symptoms can include extended cranking, a fuel smell in the oil, or a high oil level. Those symptoms warrant vehicle-specific diagnosis, but they do not by themselves prove that the pump is leaking.
Recall, investigation, and service message are not interchangeable
A safety recall identifies a safety-related defect and an official remedy process for eligible vehicles. A technical service bulletin or service message gives technicians information about a condition and diagnostic or repair procedure; it does not, by itself, mean every vehicle in a model line is recalled or entitled to a free repair. A complaint or investigation is also not the same as a completed recall. NHTSA’s recall guidance recommends checking an individual vehicle’s VIN to determine whether it has an open recall.

A secondary automotive report in August 2026 described an upgraded NHTSA investigation concerning timing-belt failure in certain 1.0L manual-transmission Fiesta and Focus vehicles, along with a Ford customer-satisfaction program. The official NHTSA search results available for this topic did not establish the current investigation status, affected population, or remedy. Treat that reported development as unconfirmed here; check NHTSA’s investigation file and Ford’s notice before relying on it. It is a separate reported matter from the documented 1.0L automatic-transmission oil-pump belt and tensioner recall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to find out what applies to your vehicle
- Record the vehicle details. Note the model year, model, engine displacement, transmission, and production or build date if available. Gather the symptoms and any diagnostic trouble codes. The Ford documents above have specific application limits.
- Check the VIN for open recalls. Use NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup, then ask a Ford dealer to confirm campaign eligibility and whether any listed repair has been completed. If the vehicle is registered outside the United States, check the recall records for that market as well.
- Describe symptoms precisely when arranging diagnosis. Examples in the cited Ford documents include low coolant, white exhaust smoke, rough running, an over-temperature warning under load, extended cranking, fuel odor in engine oil, and a high oil level. A symptom is a reason to investigate, not proof of a particular defect.
- Ask the technician to check the applicable Ford procedure. Provide the build date, codes, and vehicle details so the repair can be matched to the correct bulletin or recall. Do not order a major engine component solely because the vehicle has an EcoBoost engine or resembles an online symptom description.
What the documents do—and do not—show
Ford’s documents establish several specific conditions and responses, not one universal EcoBoost failure or a single repair program for the entire engine family. The evidence here does not establish an overall EcoBoost failure rate. For an individual vehicle, the practical starting point is its exact configuration and build date, a VIN recall check, and diagnosis using the procedure for that application.
