Ford documented oil-pan seal leaks on some 2.7L EcoBoost F-150s and issued application-specific repair guidance, including a later-style pan for certain 2015–2017 trucks. Separately, Ford introduced a second-generation 2.7L for the 2018 F-150 with design changes it said would improve durability. Those records show how Ford revised the engine and addressed particular leaks; they do not prove that every 2.7L EcoBoost had the problem or that later engines are universally reliable.
What changed in the 2.7L EcoBoost for 2018?
Ford announced an all-new second-generation 2.7-litre EcoBoost for the 2018 F-150. The company said it added advanced dual port and direct injection, reduced internal friction, and improved robustness, with the aims of improving output, efficiency, quality, and durability. Those are Ford’s descriptions of the redesign, not the findings of an independent long-term reliability study. Ford’s January 2017 announcement
Ford later reported a 25 lb.-ft. torque increase for the redesigned engine. Its published EPA-label figures for the 2018 F-150 with the 2.7-litre engine were 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. These figures describe output and fuel economy, not oil-leak frequency or engine life. Ford’s August 2017 F-150 announcement
What did Ford identify in the 2015–2017 F-150 oil-pan leak?
Ford’s August 2019 TSB 19-2205 covers some 2015–2017 F-150s with a 2.7L engine when an oil leak is confirmed at the oil-pan RTV seal. Ford wrote, “This may be due to a lack of RTV adhesion,” and directed technicians to replace the oil pan. The bulletin’s wording identifies a possible cause for the covered condition; it does not establish the cause of every oil leak on every truck. Ford TSB 19-2205, August 6, 2019

That 2019 bulletin also warns that 2015–2017 model-year vehicles are not compatible with the press-in-place-gasket oil pan described for a different repair path. Ford says installing that pan on the covered older trucks would result in engine damage. The distinction matters: the repair specified for some later-build vehicles is not a universal replacement for the earlier F-150s.
How did Ford revise the 2015–2017 F-150 repair?
Ford superseded TSB 19-2205 with TSB 23-2083 in March 2023. For qualifying 2015–2017 F-150s with confirmed oil-pan RTV seal leaks, the later bulletin specifies replacement with a later-style oil pan and lists service pan JT4Z-6675-E. It also requires technicians to inspect the valve-cover design rather than treating the repair as a simple pan swap. Ford TSB 23-2083, March 17, 2023

The reason for that inspection is the PCV system. Ford notes that some oil pans and valve covers contain internal PCV check valves; service parts must preserve an operable PCV system. The bulletin provides different inspection and labor paths depending on valve-cover condition, so the correct parts and procedure depend on the truck’s configuration.
TSB 23-2083 is technician-directed repair guidance, not a statement that every 2015–2017 F-150 needs this work. Ford says coverage remains subject to the vehicle’s applicable warranty or service-plan provisions; a bulletin by itself does not establish warranty eligibility or recall status.

Which 2018–2019 vehicles have a separate pan-repair path?
Ford issued separate guidance for specified applications. These bulletins have their own vehicle and build-date limits, and they should not be generalized to every vehicle with a 2.7L EcoBoost.
| Application covered by bulletin | Condition and repair direction | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Some 2018–2019 F-150s built on or before May 21, 2019 | For a confirmed leak meeting the bulletin’s criteria, install a new oil pan equipped with a press-in-place gasket. | Ford TSB 19-2189, August 6, 2019 |
| Specified 2018–2019 Ford Edge, Fusion, Lincoln, and related applications with 2.7L or 3.0L engines; each has its own build-date cutoff | For covered vehicles and conditions, install a new oil pan with a press-in-place gasket. Check the bulletin for the exact application and build-date criteria. | Ford TSB 23-2075, March 8, 2023 |
The table summarizes the repair paths; it does not substitute for checking the complete bulletin against a vehicle’s model, engine, build date, and confirmed leak location.

What the bulletins do—and do not—say about reliability
Ford’s records support a specific account: the company described a second-generation engine with design changes for 2018, documented an RTV-seal leak condition on some earlier F-150s, and later issued application-specific oil-pan replacement guidance. They do not establish that the 2.7L EcoBoost was universally defective before the redesign, that all 2018-and-newer engines are free of oil leaks, or that Ford measured a population-wide reliability improvement.
No independent long-term failure-rate study or before-and-after reliability statistic is established by these sources. A technical service bulletin is repair guidance for specified vehicles and symptoms—not a recall notice, a failure-rate measurement, or proof of coverage for a particular owner.

- Reliable Anti‑Corrosion Performance: A natural protective oxide layer forms on aluminum surface. It stands up to damp and corrosive working conditions, preventing rust damage and extending oil pan use time
- Magnetic Drain Plug Included: Built‑in magnet traps ferrous metal debris suspended in oil, lessening internal wear for engine protection
How to check whether a vehicle fits a bulletin
For a suspected oil-pan leak, the useful comparison is not simply “old engine versus new engine.” Confirm the details that determine which repair, if any, applies:
- Vehicle line and model year: the early RTV-seal bulletin concerns some 2015–2017 F-150s; later F-150 and other Ford/Lincoln applications have separate bulletins.
- Build date: some bulletins set explicit production cutoffs, including the F-150 cutoff of May 21, 2019 in TSB 19-2189.
- Leak location: the cited repair paths concern a confirmed leak at the oil-pan seal, not an undiagnosed oil leak from another source.
- Pan style and fitment: the 2015–2017 F-150 repair must not be confused with the press-in-place-gasket pan path for specified later applications.
- Valve-cover and PCV configuration: the 2015–2017 repair requires inspection because some configurations use internal PCV check valves that must remain functional.
Have a qualified technician verify the vehicle against the applicable Ford bulletin and parts information. For the 2015–2017 repair, JT4Z-6675-E is the service pan listed in TSB 23-2083, but a part number alone does not confirm VIN-specific fitment, supersessions, or PCV compatibility.
