The Volkswagen ID.R completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:05.336 on June 3, 2019, with Romain Dumas at the wheel. Volkswagen announced it as a new electric-car record, but the lap was not the fastest time overall: the circuit’s official table lists it in the prototypes/pre-production vehicles category and records a quicker lap by the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo.
How fast was the Volkswagen ID.R?
The ID.R’s Nordschleife lap took 6 minutes, 5.336 seconds. Volkswagen announced the time on June 3, 2019, with four-time Nürburgring 24-hour race winner Romain Dumas driving. Volkswagen said the lap beat the previous electric-car record by 40.564 seconds. Volkswagen’s announcement gives the date, time, driver and claimed margin.
What record did it set?
Volkswagen described the run as a new electric-car record. The Nürburgring’s official record table lists the 6:05.336 lap under prototypes / pre-production vehicles, dated June 3, 2019. That category matters: the ID.R was a purpose-built electric race car, not a production road car, so its time should not be presented as a production-car lap record.
Nor was it the outright fastest Nordschleife lap. The same official table lists the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo at 5:19.546, a faster time. The two entries represent different vehicles and record contexts; the ID.R’s achievement was its electric-car mark, not the circuit’s overall best lap.

What made the ID.R capable of the lap?
Volkswagen described the ID.R as a two-motor race car producing 500 kW (680 PS). For the Nordschleife, Volkswagen Motorsport adapted it with chassis tuning, energy management and tyre selection, according to the circuit’s report on the run. Those details describe the team’s stated preparation; they are not a quantified breakdown of what contributed how much to the lap time.
Volkswagen also published an average speed of 204.96 km/h. The Nürburgring report gives a slightly different average, and the available figures do not establish a reconciled value. Treat 204.96 km/h as Volkswagen’s reported statistic rather than an independently confirmed figure.

How to read the comparison
| Entry | Time | Date | Record context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen ID.R, driven by Romain Dumas | 6:05.336 | June 3, 2019 | Volkswagen-announced electric-car record; listed by the Nürburgring under prototypes / pre-production vehicles |
| Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo | 5:19.546 | Not stated here | Faster entry shown in the Nürburgring’s official record table; not an ID.R electric-car comparison |
The figures make the distinction plain: a notable record within an electric-car context can coexist with a faster lap in a broader category. The right shorthand is that the ID.R set a significant electric-car mark at the Nordschleife in 2019—not that it was the fastest car ever around the circuit.
