EV battery cell bypass is a switching method that routes current around a selected cell section in a series string. While bypassed, that section no longer contributes its voltage; the switch does not restore the cell’s lost capacity. The effect on a vehicle’s usable energy and range depends on the pack’s design and controls, so there is no reliable universal percentage.
What cell bypass does
A battery pack is assembled from cells and modules connected in arrangements chosen to provide the voltage and capacity a vehicle needs. In a series string, the connected sections contribute their voltages along the current path. A bypass circuit creates an alternate route around one selected section, allowing current to continue through the rest of the string without passing through that cell while the bypass is active.

That is a routing or isolation action, not a repair. It does not replenish a weak cell, make its capacity available elsewhere, or make the pack behave as though the cell were healthy. The immediate electrical consequence in the described cell-level design is that the bypassed section stops contributing its cell voltage to the string.

The cell path and the bypass path
In the patent-described architecture, a battery section contains a cell and a charging/discharging switch in series with it. A separate bypass switch is connected in parallel with that cell path. With the bypass switch open, current can flow through the cell section. Closing the bypass switch provides a route around it, so current can continue through the remaining series string without flowing through the selected cell.

The switch states matter: bypass does not mean that the cell is repaired or that its voltage is somehow preserved. The alternate path changes which section current traverses. The patent also describes a pack power-control switch and a controller that can open the pack switch before changing the charge and bypass switches, then restore power flow. That sequence is specific to the patent’s implementation; it is not a general procedure for servicing an EV battery.
How the described controller decides to bypass
The patent describes estimating cell capacity by monitoring voltage over charging cycles and considering how voltage changes in relation to the current profile. If the estimated capacity falls below a threshold, the controller can determine a bypass interval based on that cell’s capacity and operate the switches to bypass the cell for the selected period. The description covers charge and discharge operation.
This is an example of a proposed control method, not evidence that all vehicle battery-management systems use this algorithm. A patent documents a design; on its own, it does not show that a particular automaker has deployed the design in a production vehicle.

What bypass means for pack capacity, voltage, and range
Why the bypassed cell still matters
Cell capacity describes how much charge a cell can store and deliver under specified conditions. Bypassing changes the current route; it does not increase the cell’s capacity. In the described series arrangement, the bypassed section is removed from the active voltage contribution while the bypass is closed. The string therefore has less voltage contribution from that section during bypass.
Pack energy and driving range cannot be calculated from that fact alone. A vehicle’s pack may have series and parallel connections, multiple modules, voltage limits, and control strategies that affect the result. The outcome also depends on how long bypass is active and on the remaining pack’s operating limits. The available sources do not establish a generally applicable capacity or range penalty for bypassing one cell in an EV, and they do not support a universal percentage.
Why a weak cell could change pack behavior
A weak cell can constrain how a series string is operated because the connected sections carry the same series current. A controller that can route around a section may change the string’s electrical behavior, but that does not prove that bypass will increase usable energy or range. Whether the rest of a pack can operate effectively after a section is bypassed depends on its architecture and vehicle controls.
For a specific vehicle, a reliable estimate requires model-specific information such as the pack’s series/parallel layout, module structure, voltage limits, bypass duration, and battery-management strategy. Without those details, a numerical estimate would be guesswork rather than a meaningful prediction.
Cell bypass, module bypass, and cell balancing are different
| Approach | What is switched or managed | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Cell-level bypass | A selected cell section in a series string | The described cell-bypass design routes current around that section, removing its voltage contribution while bypass is active. |
| Module-level bypass | A battery module | A 2026 Journal of Energy Storage research article describes a modular pack using solid-state switches to selectively bypass modules. Its scope is modules, not individual cells. |
| Cell balancing | Differences in cell state of charge | Balancing manages differences in cell state of charge. It is not another name for routing current around a cell. |
The distinction matters when interpreting claims about battery management. A study of module switching cannot establish that a car has individual-cell bypass, and the fact that two approaches involve switches does not make them interchangeable. The 2026 module-level work describes selective bypass as a way to manage voltage and state of charge and reduce traction-inverter losses; that finding should not be transferred to a different, cell-level topology as though it described the same system.

When comparing architectures, keep the scale of the switched unit clear: an individual cell section and a whole module are not equivalent. Also ask what conditions trigger switching, how long the selected section remains bypassed, what voltage and power limits apply to the remaining pack, and what fault-handling and safety provisions are built into the system. Those details determine how a design operates; they cannot be inferred merely from the word “bypass.”
What the available evidence establishes—and what it does not
- Patent-described design: A documented architecture uses series-connected battery sections, a bypass switch in parallel with a cell path, capacity estimation, and a controller-selected bypass period. This establishes that the design is described in a patent, not that it is standard equipment or present in a named production EV.
- Module-level research: A 2026 Journal of Energy Storage article discusses selective module bypass in a modular pack. It is a separate scale of switching from individual-cell bypass.
- Automotive BMS context: Bosch describes battery-management systems that monitor, manage, control, and disconnect battery cells through a battery control unit and cell-supervision circuits. That general context does not document cell bypass in a specific car.
- Aerospace context: An Aerospace Corporation report discusses autonomous or commanded lithium-ion cell bypass alongside mission reliability and safety concerns. Its aerospace focus makes it context, not guidance for EV owners or technicians.
These sources do not establish which production vehicles, if any, use the patent-described cell-bypass arrangement. Nor do they provide a general measured range loss or capacity reduction for one bypassed EV cell. A vehicle-specific manufacturer document or pack schematic is needed to make claims about an actual model.
What an EV owner should do if a cell fault is suspected
Cell-level battery work involves high-voltage components and vehicle-specific control systems. The patent’s switch sequence is not an owner repair recipe, and the described sources do not establish a safe, compatible consumer bypass product. Do not treat a bypass switch, relay, or generic battery-management component as a drop-in remedy.
- Confirm the warning or symptom. Record the dashboard message, diagnostic trouble codes if available, and any change in charging or driving behavior. A symptom alone does not identify a failed cell or prove that bypass is an option.
- Check documentation for the exact vehicle. Use the manufacturer’s owner information and service guidance for the model and battery configuration. Do not infer a feature from a patent or from research on a different pack topology.
- Arrange qualified diagnosis. If a battery fault is indicated, use a manufacturer-authorized repair channel or a technician qualified for EV high-voltage battery diagnostics. Ask for findings tied to the vehicle’s fault codes and pack documentation, rather than a generic claim that one cell can simply be bypassed.
- Ask what the proposed remedy changes. If bypass is mentioned, clarify whether the design acts at cell or module level, what operating conditions trigger it, how long the section is excluded, and how voltage and safety limits are handled. Those are architecture-specific questions, not a universal DIY checklist.
No compatible owner-installed bypass part or standard repair price is established by these sources. Costs would depend on the vehicle, diagnosis, and any manufacturer-approved repair approach, so a quoted amount should come from a qualified provider after vehicle-specific assessment. Treat an offer to install a generic switch as a warning sign rather than evidence that the pack supports the modification.
How to evaluate a bypass claim for a particular EV
Before accepting a claim that a vehicle can bypass a cell—or that doing so preserves a particular amount of range—look for evidence tied to the exact model and pack version. The useful details are the bypass granularity, the conditions and duration for switching, the remaining pack voltage and power limits, and the fault-handling and safety provisions.
If documentation does not identify those details, it is not enough to conclude that the car has cell-level bypass or to quantify the capacity effect. General BMS descriptions show that systems can monitor and control battery cells; they do not, by themselves, prove a particular bypass feature. Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence: a described topology is not proof of production deployment, and no universal range figure follows from the concept alone.

The Bottom Line
Cell bypass is a way to route current around a selected battery section, not a way to recover that cell’s capacity. In the described series design, bypass lowers the string’s voltage contribution from that section while active. Whether a particular EV supports this approach—and what it means for usable energy or range—requires vehicle-specific documentation; no universal capacity or range percentage is supported.
