An electric car’s range changes because the battery must power more than the wheels: speed, temperature, cabin heating or cooling, acceleration, cargo, hills, and road conditions all affect how much energy a trip uses. Higher sustained speeds generally reduce efficiency; extreme temperatures can do the same; and rapid acceleration typically uses more energy than gradual acceleration. There is no reliable universal percentage to add or subtract for every driver, car, and trip. The most useful way to understand a range change is to compare the conditions behind the estimate with the conditions on the road.

Why does electric-car range change?

Range is the distance a car can travel using its available battery energy. It is not a fixed distance that the car will achieve on every trip. The energy needed per mile changes with the route and the way the car is driven, while cabin heating or cooling adds another demand on the battery. A range estimate is therefore best understood as an expectation under particular conditions, not a promise that applies regardless of weather, speed, or route.

Several factors can affect a trip at the same time. A cold-weather highway journey, for example, combines outside temperature, cabin heating, and sustained speed. Hills, wind, traffic, and vehicle load can also change energy use. Because those influences vary together, a single observed drop does not by itself show which factor caused it. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center describes the general effects of speed, temperature, acceleration, load, and inclines, but does not establish one adjustment that applies to all models or drivers. Why does an EV use more energy at higher speeds?

At higher speeds, the car needs more energy to overcome aerodynamic drag—the resistance of air against the moving vehicle. As a result, driving quickly on a sustained highway run generally uses more energy per mile than travelling more slowly. There is no model-independent speed threshold or fixed range penalty for every increase of 5 or 10 mph in the available official guidance, so a universal “best speed” or percentage loss would be misleading.

City driving can be more efficient than highway driving for all-electric vehicles, despite frequent stops. Braking can recover some energy through regenerative braking, which returns some energy to the battery. That recovery is not a reason to accelerate hard and brake sharply: the DOE guidance says rapid acceleration reduces range compared with gradual acceleration. The overall result still depends on the trip. Traffic, terrain, temperature, and vehicle design can change the comparison between a city route and a highway route.

How to compare two drives

When judging whether speed changed your range, compare trips with similar conditions rather than treating the posted speed limit as the only variable. Consider whether each drive had sustained high-speed sections, stop-and-go traffic, hills, different temperatures, cabin climate control, or a different load. A difference between two trips cannot be attributed to speed alone if those other conditions changed too.

How much range does an EV lose in cold weather?

Cold weather can reduce range because energy is needed to heat the cabin, and battery and vehicle performance are also affected by temperature. Hot conditions can also reduce range when the car must use energy to cool the cabin. The effect on an individual trip depends on the vehicle and circumstances; the official sources do not provide a single percentage that accurately predicts every driver’s result.

One often-quoted figure needs especially careful context. In a December 2020 summary of controlled laboratory tests, the U.S. Department of Energy reported that all-electric vehicles can experience a nearly 40% decrease in fuel economy in cold temperatures. This is a test finding, not a promise that every EV will lose 40% of its rated range on every winter trip. It does not specify a universal loss for a particular outside temperature, journey length, heater setting, or vehicle. DOE: The Effect of Cold Temperatures on Fuel Economy (2020)

A separate DOE program record published in September 2024 examines speed and ambient temperature together. In the analysis and across the temperatures examined, the modeled range impacts begin to converge as speed rises above 40 mph, indicating that temperature had less effect on range at highway speeds in that analysis. This is a result for the study’s modeled conditions, not a rule that cold stops mattering above 40 mph or that drivers should expect the same result in another vehicle or route. DOE: Program Record—Impact of Cold Ambient Temperature and Extreme Conditions on Electric Vehicles (2024)

What the heat-pump figure means

The same 2024 program record reports that a heat pump reduced total HVAC system power draw by 38% at 20°F for the vehicle and conditions shown in that record. That number describes HVAC power draw in a particular comparison; it is not a 38% increase in total driving range, nor a guarantee for every EV equipped with a heat pump. The record also notes that heat pumps become less effective in extreme cold, when resistance heating may meet much of the demand. Heat-pump availability and behavior are model-specific.

How do driving style and route affect range?

Gradual acceleration generally uses less energy than rapid acceleration. Repeated hard acceleration can therefore reduce range relative to a smoother driving style. This does not mean smooth driving cancels out other demands: it cannot erase the effects of high speed, temperature, steep climbs, or a heavy load.

Route and vehicle load matter as well. Hauling heavy cargo can reduce range, and driving up significant inclines requires energy. Traffic and road conditions can further distinguish two journeys that look similar on a map. When estimating a trip, use the route and load you actually expect rather than relying only on a vehicle’s published figure or a previous drive under different conditions.

Vehicle-specific factors such as battery, tires, and thermal-management design may matter too, but the official sources cited here do not quantify their effects for particular models. That is another reason not to treat a comparison under different conditions as a precise measure of one factor.

What does an official EV range estimate tell you?

In the United States, new light-duty vehicle fuel-economy estimates on window stickers draw on five controlled test cycles: city, highway, high-speed, air-conditioning, and cold-temperature. The Environmental Protection Agency adjusts results for conditions outside the tests, including wind, hills, and road conditions. The aim is to provide a standardized basis for comparing vehicles, not to guarantee the distance one driver will get on a particular journey. That distinction helps explain why a real trip may differ from a published figure without either number being inherently wrong. The label comes from a structured comparison method; a specific drive has its own speed, temperature, route, HVAC use, and load. A vehicle’s displayed range estimate likewise should be read in light of recent or expected driving conditions rather than as an independent measurement of exactly how far the next journey will go.

How to preserve more range in cold weather

The DOE recommends using a vehicle’s preconditioning feature while it is still plugged in, if the model supports it. Preconditioning can warm the cabin and battery before departure while drawing energy from the charger. This can reduce the amount of battery energy needed to bring the car to a comfortable starting condition on the road, but the benefit depends on the vehicle and circumstances. DOE also suggests covered parking where available. DOE: Winterizing Your Electric Vehicle (2024)

  1. Check the vehicle’s settings and manual. Confirm whether it offers preconditioning and whether the feature can be scheduled or started while connected to a charger; controls differ by model.
  2. Precondition while connected, when supported. Start the vehicle’s supported preconditioning process before departure so the cabin and battery can warm while the car is plugged in.
  3. Use covered parking when practical. DOE lists covered parking as a winter measure; it is not a guarantee of a particular range improvement.
  4. Plan around the actual trip conditions. Allow for cold, speed, route elevation, HVAC demand, and cargo when deciding whether the available charge is adequate. No cited source provides a universal winter adjustment that can replace a vehicle- and trip-specific estimate.

DOE also discusses charge-connector covers as protection against a connector freezing in snow or sleet. That is a measure for protecting the charging connection, not an established way to increase driving range.

Why one range-loss percentage can be misleading

A single percentage hides important differences between a controlled test result and a particular driver’s trip. The nearly 40% cold-weather figure is DOE’s summary of laboratory testing; the 38% figure concerns HVAC power draw in a specific heat-pump comparison; and the above-40-mph finding belongs to a 2024 analysis across the temperatures it examined. These figures describe different outcomes and contexts. None is a universal calculator for the range change on an individual journey.

For practical decisions, use published estimates to compare vehicles on a consistent basis, then assess a planned trip using its expected speed, weather, climate-control use, elevation, traffic, and load. If an observed result surprises you, compare those conditions with the trip or estimate you are using as a baseline before concluding that one factor explains the difference.
