Formula 1 teams trade aerodynamic grip for straight-line speed: downforce helps a car corner, while drag resists its forward motion. Historically, DRS reduced rear-wing drag in designated zones. For 2026, active aerodynamics replaces DRS, and Overtake Mode is a separate power-deployment feature.
Why downforce helps in corners but costs speed on a straight
A car’s wings and other aerodynamic surfaces redirect airflow, creating downforce that presses the car toward the track. That load helps the tyres maintain grip, supporting cornering, traction and handling. The same aerodynamic surfaces also create drag: resistance against the car’s forward motion. More drag tends to constrain acceleration and top speed on a straight. Formula 1’s glossary describes both effects.

Reducing wing load or using a low-drag configuration can help a car travel faster on a straight, but it may also reduce the downforce available in corners. The right balance depends on the circuit: a setup that gains time on a long straight can lose more through corners if it gives up too much grip. There is no universal numerical exchange rate between straight-line speed and cornering performance in the cited sources.

Wings are only part of the aerodynamic picture. The floor, diffuser, ride height and wing configuration interact, so a speed difference between cars cannot automatically be attributed to one wing setting. In a 2021 technical analysis, Formula 1 discussed how ride-height engineering could affect Mercedes’ straight-line pace, illustrating why the overall aerodynamic balance matters. The practical comparison is therefore between a car’s performance on straights and through corners over the whole circuit, not simply whether it has more downforce or less drag. The sources do not establish a general kilometres-per-hour gain for a particular drag reduction or aerodynamic setting; actual speed depends on the car, configuration, circuit, conditions and session.
How DRS worked before the 2026 regulations
DRS, or the Drag Reduction System, was a movable flap in the rear wing. In designated DRS zones, usually on straights, opening the flap reduced aerodynamic drag and helped the car move faster. Formula 1’s historical explanation says that, in a race, a driver could use DRS when less than one second behind the car ahead at the detection point. Its glossary also says DRS was unavailable in wet conditions. Formula 1’s glossary now describes DRS as replaced under the 2026 regulations, so these rules are historical rather than current.

DRS did not remove all aerodynamic resistance from the car. It changed the rear wing’s configuration to reduce its drag, improving straight-line speed while the system was engaged. The resulting gain was not a fixed speed increment applicable to every car or circuit.

What replaced DRS in Formula 1’s 2026 terminology
Formula 1’s December 17, 2025 terminology update describes active aerodynamics as movable front- and rear-wing elements with Corner and Straight modes. It is the aerodynamic system in the 2026 terminology, not simply DRS under a new name. Formula 1’s terminology update distinguishes it from two power-related functions:

| 2026 term | What it does |
|---|---|
| Active aerodynamics | Changes the aerodynamic configuration using movable front- and rear-wing elements, with Corner and Straight modes. |
| Overtake Mode | Provides extra power to help with an overtake; Formula 1’s update describes it as available to a driver within one second of a car ahead. |
| Boost Mode | Gives the driver control over energy deployment. |
Active aerodynamics changes aerodynamic configuration; Overtake Mode concerns power deployment. They serve distinct functions and should not be conflated.

Formula One World Championship Limited stated in its 2025 overview that the 2026 regulations reduce overall downforce by approximately 15–30% and overall drag by up to 40%. These are the organization’s estimates for the regulation changes, not independently measured comparisons of race speeds or promised gains in kilometres per hour. The terminology update and Formula 1’s 2026 regulations overview provide the regulation context.
