The name and logo have different origin stories: one stuck because Dodge’s brand team liked it; the other was added after the company saw positive social-media feedback.
How did Dodge come up with the Hellcat name?
“Hellcat” was first an internal codename for the supercharged HEMI. In a September 12, 2014 account, Stellantis quoted Russ Ruedisueli, SRT Engineering’s vehicle-line executive, explaining how it became the public name: “It just kind of stuck. The brand guys loved it.” Stellantis’ account of the Hellcat’s development is the clearest published explanation of that transition.
Dodge’s official explanation adds a historical association: its Spanish-language high-performance FAQ says the car takes its name from the Grumman F6F Hellcat, a World War II fighter. Dodge points to the aircraft’s power and aggressive character, as well as its supercharger, as parallels to the car. Dodge’s performance FAQ gives the brand’s stated rationale; the available accounts do not describe exactly when the aircraft reference entered the naming discussion.
These accounts describe complementary parts of the story. Ruedisueli explains how the codename caught on inside the company; Dodge’s FAQ explains the public-facing aircraft association.

Why does the Hellcat have a cat-head logo?
The emblem was a late change, not the original plan. Motor Authority’s May 13, 2015 report says Dodge initially expected to use “supercharged” badging on the Challenger Hellcat. Then-CEO Tim Kuniskis said Dodge tracked reactions to the Hellcat logo on social media and decided to put it on production cars. As quoted in the report, he called it “a very last-minute change all driven by feedback on social media.” Motor Authority’s account of the logo’s arrival also notes that press-event cars and early Charger images still showed “supercharged” badging.
The report describes several early sketch concepts, including an angry-looking house cat and a design that could be mistaken for a Voltron logo. That establishes that the mark went through iterations, but it does not identify the person who designed the final badge or document the complete approval process. The available reporting therefore supports the story of how Dodge chose to use the emblem, not individual designer credit.

What changed from the original badge plan?
| Original plan | Production choice | What the change conveyed |
|---|---|---|
| “Supercharged” badging | Snarling cat-head emblem | The first label described the engine setup; the adopted emblem gave the Hellcat a distinctive visual identity. Motor Authority reported that social-media feedback helped prompt the late switch. |
The change was more than a different way to label the car: Dodge moved from a functional description to a recognizable symbol tied to the Hellcat name. The reporting does not establish that social-media users created the logo; it says Dodge considered audience reaction when deciding to put the emblem on production vehicles.
