The actuator moves brake components that mechanically hold the vehicle in place. The exact mechanism and operating rules depend on the vehicle: some EPBs act directly on rear calipers, while others pull cables to a separate drum brake.
What happens when you press the switch?
The switch is a control, not the part that holds the car. When you apply the EPB, its electronic control system commands an actuator to create force at the parking brake. In HELLA’s Audi example, a DC motor turns reduction gears and a spindle. The spindle changes the motor’s rotation into short linear movement at the caliper piston, pressing the pads against the brake disc. A sensor reports motor revolutions so the control unit can estimate movement. This is one design, not a universal layout. HELLA’s EPB overview describes the example.
Where does the actuator apply the braking force?
EPBs can use different mechanical arrangements. In HELLA’s Audi example, an actuator is integrated with the rear caliper. In its BMW example, a central motor turns a spindle that moves a balancing mechanism and cable pulleys; the cables apply a duo-servo drum brake inside the rear brake discs. In both cases, electrical controls move mechanical brake components to hold the vehicle.
How do you apply or release an EPB?
Follow the owner’s manual for your vehicle: button direction, power-state requirements, interlocks and automatic functions vary. For example, Hyundai’s 2026 owner manual instructs the driver to press the brake pedal and pull up the EPB switch, then confirm that the parking-brake warning light comes on. For manual release, it specifies the required powered state, pressing the brake pedal and pressing the switch, followed by checking that the warning light goes out. Hyundai’s 2026 Tucson owner manual gives the model-specific steps.

Automatic application and release
Some vehicles apply or release the EPB automatically under specified conditions. Hyundai’s 2026 manual says its system may apply when requested by another system or when the vehicle is turned off while Auto Hold is operating. It describes release when shifting out of Park or Neutral with the brake pedal depressed, and another release route that depends on conditions such as the vehicle being on, the driver’s seat belt fastened, listed closures shut, the correct gear selected and accelerator input. Those are Hyundai-specific examples; do not assume another car behaves the same way.
Can you use an EPB for emergency braking?
Only follow the emergency procedure in your vehicle’s manual. Hyundai’s 2026 manual says: “If there is a problem with the brake pedal while driving, emergency braking is possible by pulling up and holding the EPB switch.” It also says braking continues only while the switch is held and that stopping distance may be longer than normal. The manual warns against operating the EPB while moving except in an emergency. An EPB is not a normal substitute for the service brake.

What if the EPB warning light stays on or the system behaves unusually?
A clicking sound during normal operation can be expected, according to the cited Hyundai manual. If a warning indication persists, follow the vehicle’s instructions and arrange qualified inspection; Hyundai directs owners to authorized inspection for specified EPB malfunction indications. Unusual noise or a burning smell after emergency operation also calls for attention rather than continued use.
Low-voltage behavior is vehicle-specific, too. Hyundai’s 2026 manual says its EPB may apply with the Start/Stop button off if battery power is available, but cannot be released in that state. Do not assume that all EPBs respond identically to a flat or disconnected battery.

Why can rear-brake service require a special procedure?
On some vehicles, a technician must put the EPB into a service or maintenance mode before working on the rear pads or caliper. Otherwise, the actuator may clamp while the brake is being serviced. HELLA describes using a diagnostic unit to retract and reset the cylinder on its Audi A8 example; its BMW example has a different arrangement and procedure. HELLA’s technical overview covers those model-specific examples.
TRW’s Easycheck instructions likewise describe maintenance mode and post-service checks for supported Ford systems. The procedures and available tool functions depend on the vehicle and operation. For brake work, use the exact vehicle’s service information and a tool confirmed to support that make, model, year and function, or have a qualified technician do the work. TRW’s Easycheck EPB instructions set out the scope and prerequisites for its supported functions.
