That put the combined Hummer total about 77% of the Lightning’s count, a difference of 1,334 vehicles—but it was not a pickup-versus-pickup comparison.
What the Q2 2025 numbers show

The arithmetic is straightforward: the Hummer EV’s combined pickup-and-SUV count was 1,334 below the Lightning’s reported count, or roughly 77% as large. “Almost outselling” captures that numerical closeness, but it can give the wrong impression if read as a direct comparison between two pickup models. One figure combines two Hummer body styles; the other is for the F-150 Lightning pickup.
Why the Hummer figure needs context
GM reported 2,929 HUMMER EV pickups and SUVs combined in Q2 2024, then 4,508 in Q2 2025—a year-over-year increase of 53.9%, according to the same GM sales report. The reported increase concerns the combined Hummer EV total, not the pickup alone.
GM’s broader sales message should not be mistaken for an explanation of this particular result. In its July 1, 2025 presentation, GM senior vice president and North America president Duncan Aldred said the company’s investments across crossovers, SUVs and pickups—gas and electric—along with employee, supplier and dealer execution had made GM “the engine of growth for the U.S. auto industry this year.” That was GM’s characterization of its wider business, not a neutral analysis of Hummer EV sales or the Hummer-Lightning comparison. The gap did not establish a lasting sales ranking
A single quarter is a snapshot, not evidence that the two vehicles were on a sustained trajectory toward equal sales. In Q3 2025, Ford reported a record 10,005 F-150 Lightning deliveries, up 39.7% year over year. That later result shows why the Q2 comparison should not be carried forward as a current ranking. Ford also reported 82,886 “electrified” vehicle sales in Q2 2025 and 156,509 in the first half of that year. Those company-wide totals include hybrids and plug-in hybrids as well as electric vehicles; they are not battery-electric sales totals and cannot be used as a substitute for the Lightning figure. What changed for the electric Lightning
On December 15, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Ford planned to stop making the fully electric F-150 Lightning and offer an extended-range version instead.
