BYD overtook Tesla on some sales measures before it did on others. The International Energy Agency says BYD had already sold more plug-in hybrids and battery-electric cars combined in 2022, then became the leading battery-electric car company in the second half of 2023. In 2025, BYD reported more battery-electric vehicle sales than Tesla reported vehicle deliveries—but those are not perfectly matching measures.
What does “beat Tesla” mean?
The answer depends on which vehicles and dates are being compared. A battery-electric vehicle (BEV) runs on electricity alone. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) combines a rechargeable battery and electric motor with an internal-combustion engine. BYD sells both; Tesla’s lineup is battery-electric.
In its 2024 analysis, the IEA’s electric-car market figures include BEVs and PHEVs. On that combined basis, BYD had passed Tesla by 2022 and held more than 20% of the global electric-car market. For BEVs alone, the IEA says BYD became the leading battery-electric car company in the second half of 2023. The distinction matters: counting BYD’s plug-in hybrids changes the timing and meaning of the comparison.

The 2025 figures offer a later snapshot, but still require care. The Associated Press reported that BYD sold 2.26 million BEVs that year, up 28%, while Tesla reported 1.64 million vehicle deliveries, down 9%. How BYD built a sales advantage
It focused on lower-priced models
The IEA describes BYD’s strategy as favoring cheaper models while seeking to protect margins by developing its battery supply chain in-house. That positioning helped BYD address a broader range of buyers than a strategy centered on higher-priced vehicles could. It is one part of the explanation, not proof that price alone caused the sales lead.

The IEA estimated gross profit per vehicle at roughly USD 6,000 for BYD and USD 10,000–15,000 for Tesla across the approximate 2022–2023 period. Those are historical estimates, not current margins. Its business extends beyond BEVs
BYD’s plug-in hybrids count toward its broader new-energy vehicle business, even though they do not count as BEVs. That wider product mix helped it lead the combined BEV-and-PHEV measure before it led BEVs alone. It also gave the company another vehicle type to sell in markets or circumstances where buyers wanted electric driving without relying solely on charging.

It developed battery and component capabilities
In-house battery supply is central to the IEA’s account of BYD’s approach. BYD also presents itself as a manufacturer with capabilities across EV components, not only as a vehicle assembler. These capabilities can support control over supply and product development, but company statements about technology should not be treated as independent validation of performance or cost advantages.
It expanded beyond China
BYD said its overseas new-energy passenger-car sales exceeded 240,000 units in 2023, an increase of 337% year on year, and that it introduced vehicles in 64 countries and regions. These are company-reported figures. “Introduced” in a market does not mean the same thing as a vehicle sold there, and neither figure alone establishes the company’s share or rank in each country. What Tesla’s pricing and financial results show
Tesla’s 2024 filing provides context for the competitive pressure around prices, but it does not explain BYD’s rise by itself. Tesla attributed lower automotive sales revenue chiefly to lower average selling prices following price reductions and financing offers, alongside fewer combined cash deliveries of the Model 3 and Model Y. BYD reported RMB 777.1 billion in revenue and RMB 40.25 billion in net profit attributable to shareholders for 2024. These are company-reported full-year results; revenue and profit say different things from vehicle volume. BYD 2024 annual results

What the lead does—and does not—prove
BYD’s rise reflects several interacting strengths: lower-priced vehicles, a product range that includes PHEVs, in-house battery supply, component capabilities, and overseas expansion. The cited figures establish sales milestones and provide context for those strategies; they do not isolate a single cause or prove that one company is superior in every market, vehicle class, or financial measure.
Nor is the lead risk-free. AP reported sales weakness and price-war pressure in early 2026 alongside BYD’s 2025 profit decline. A volume lead is a snapshot, not a guarantee of future growth or profitability. Associated Press, 2025 results report
