Bentley’s electric Torcal has a purpose-built soundtrack made with real instruments, including drums, viola and bass guitar. The company says it is not a recording or imitation of its V8 or W12 engines: it is a new sonic identity intended to evoke their emotional character through rhythm.
Why give an electric Bentley a soundtrack?
Combustion engines make their own sounds as they accelerate. An electric powertrain does not produce the same engine note, so Bentley approached the Torcal’s sound as something to design rather than simply preserve. Bentley describes it as the powertrain’s “sonic identity”: a musical element that responds to driver inputs and expresses the car’s character. Bentley’s sound-design account links that character to the marque’s history with V8s, W12s and supercharged cars, whose acceleration it compares to an orchestral performance.
How Bentley developed the sound
It studied a V8, then looked beyond imitation
Bentley says its design team recorded and analyzed a V8 in a studio. The team concluded that the engine’s rhythm mattered more than reproducing its exact note. To explore that idea, it played a V8 recording through a parabolic speaker on one side of a space while a drummer performed on the other. Walking between them, the designers compared their energy and emotional impact.
It treated variation as part of the character
The comparison also drew attention to small imperfections: Bentley says both engines and drummers have variations that give their sound a human quality. The Torcal soundtrack was then performed by musicians using real instruments and curated acoustic textures. Bentley does not name the performers on its sound-design page.

Does the Torcal sound like a V8 or W12?
Not as a literal reproduction, according to Bentley. The company’s stated aim is to evoke the feelings associated with its engines, rather than copy an engine note. Its page puts the distinction plainly: “By focusing on rhythm, rather than imitation, we found a new way to express Bentley’s character in the electric age.”
The W12 is part of the sound heritage Bentley cites, but the Torcal soundtrack is not a recording of that engine. Nor should it be confused with the W12’s powertrain successor: on 8 May 2024, Bentley announced that an Ultra Performance V8 hybrid would take the place of the W12 as its pinnacle powertrain. How the soundtrack changes while driving
Bentley’s own page says the sound responds to driver inputs but does not detail the controls. T3 reported on 23 September 2026 that it varies with torque demand and vehicle speed, grows more prominent in Sport mode, and can be turned off. Those specific operating details come from T3’s report on the Torcal soundtrack, rather than the Bentley sound-design page.

The powertrain soundtrack is separate from the sounds used for controls and alerts. T3 also reports that the indicator sound is derived from a hammer striking leather, while touchscreen and digital-assistant notes use a crystal-glass sound. These are interface sounds, not parts of the V8-inspired powertrain soundtrack.
