An electric motor can also generate electricity when an external force turns it. In an electric vehicle, the moving wheels can drive the traction motor during deceleration; the motor then resists their rotation and sends some of the vehicle’s motion energy through the electrical system to the battery.
How can an electric motor also act as a generator?
The difference is the direction of energy flow. A motor takes in electrical energy and produces rotating mechanical motion. A generator takes in mechanical motion and produces electrical energy. The Physics Classroom describes a generator as “an electric motor in reverse.” The Physics Classroom’s explanation of generators shows how turning a motor’s shaft can generate electricity.
| Operating mode | Energy input | Energy output |
|---|---|---|
| Motor | Electrical energy | Rotational mechanical motion |
| Generator | Rotational mechanical motion | Electrical energy |
In generator operation, rotation changes the magnetic flux through the machine’s windings. That changing magnetic flux induces a voltage, also called an electromotive force. If there is a complete circuit and the electrical system can accept the output, current can flow.
Turning a small motor shaft can therefore produce a measurable electrical output, but the shaft must be driven and the motor’s electrical arrangement must support generation. A motor does not produce useful electricity simply because it exists: mechanical input and a suitable path for the output are necessary.

How does regenerative braking generate electricity?
During regenerative braking, a vehicle’s moving wheels turn its traction motor instead of the motor driving the wheels. The motor operates as a generator: its electromagnetic reaction resists the wheel-driven rotation, helping slow the vehicle, while the electrical output can be directed to the traction battery. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center explains this process in its hybrid braking overview.
This is a coordinated vehicle-system function, not just a motor acting alone. The traction battery stores electrical energy for the electric traction motor, and the power electronics controller manages energy flow while controlling motor speed and torque. The Department of Energy describes those roles in its overview of how plug-in hybrid electric cars work.

Does regenerative braking recover all the energy?
No. Regenerative braking recaptures some energy that would otherwise be lost as the vehicle slows; it does not restore all the vehicle’s motion energy to the battery. The Department of Energy describes recovery as partial, and the level and control behavior of regeneration vary by vehicle. The available sources do not establish one universal recovery percentage, so a single figure would be misleading.

The generated electricity can flow through the vehicle’s controlled electrical system to the traction battery, where it is stored for later use by the electric motor. The Alternative Fuels Data Center defines regenerative braking as capturing energy normally lost during braking by using the motor as a generator and storing captured energy in the battery; see its glossary of alternative-fuel vehicle terms.
