But there is no publicly established, universal team-by-team sequence for designing, signing off and introducing a part. What is clear is that every decision sits inside a regulated development environment: aerodynamic testing is limited, components must comply when raced, and power-unit upgrades follow separate homologation rules. The 2026 rules also include ADUO, a mechanism that can give qualifying power-unit manufacturers additional upgrade opportunities.
What counts as an F1 car upgrade?
An upgrade is a change intended to improve a car, whether the goal is performance, reliability or both. The term can cover aerodynamic parts and power-unit development, but those areas do not share one unrestricted development path. Aerodynamic work is constrained by limits on wind-tunnel and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) activity. Power-unit changes are governed by homologation requirements, with conditional additional opportunities under the 2026 Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) provisions.

That distinction matters when asking why a team does not simply build a promising part and bring it to the next race. A design has to be developed within the available testing resources, made in time, and shown to comply with the technical rules. For a power unit, the applicable homologation framework adds another constraint. The details of how a team sequences its own design reviews, simulations, manufacturing approvals and track evaluations are not established as a universal process; those internal procedures can differ and are often proprietary.

The most defensible way to describe the process is as a set of engineering questions rather than a fixed checklist used identically by every team. A team must define the intended gain, assess the design, decide whether the predicted benefit and risks justify the effort, and then manufacture and introduce a part that complies with the regulations. Simulation and physical facilities are part of aerodynamic development, but public information does not establish universal correlation methods, approval gates or minimum thresholds for accepting a design.

1. Define the performance or reliability target
Development begins with a problem or opportunity to address: a performance target, a reliability concern, or both. The target provides the basis for comparing options. A performance improvement has little practical value if its reliability or operating risks make it unsuitable, and a potential gain must be weighed against the time and resources needed to produce the part.
2. Evaluate designs using permitted tools
Teams use CFD and wind tunnels to develop aerodynamic parts. These tools are useful in different ways, but their use is restricted under the FIA’s aerodynamic testing rules. In practical terms, development is not just a search for the best design: it is also a choice about how to allocate limited testing activity among possible solutions and development horizons.
One public example shows why that allocation can span more than one car. In March 2025, Aston Martin said its new in-house wind tunnel would support development of both its 2025-specification AMR25 and its 2026 challenger. The team described the model build area and wind tunnel as supporting rapid development and giving aerodynamicists a closer view of complex flow physics. That account illustrates one team’s facility use; it does not prove that every team divides its work in the same way. Formula 1’s report on Aston Martin’s wind tunnel provides the team-specific example.

A useful way to assess competing designs is to ask how large the expected performance gain is, how confident the team is in the predicted behavior, what reliability or operating risks remain, and whether manufacturing lead time and available spares make introduction practical. Testing-resource use and regulatory compliance also belong in the decision. These are sensible comparison questions, not evidence of a single formal scoring system shared by all teams.

The distinction between prediction and confirmation is important: the available public sources do not establish a universal level of simulation-to-track correlation that an upgrade must reach before a team accepts it. Nor do they specify one standard point in the race calendar when teams introduce ordinary aerodynamic parts. The timing is therefore best understood as a team decision made within its engineering, production and regulatory constraints—not as a fixed F1-wide schedule.
4. Manufacture, install and check the part
Once a team chooses to proceed, it must manufacture and prepare the component for the intended event. The exact internal sign-off and installation sequence is team-specific in the public evidence available here. The rule that does apply is concrete: the part must comply with the technical regulations in the configuration in which it is run. FIA checks can be carried out during a season, including in parc fermé and after a race, so compliance is not merely a design-office question.
How do F1 teams test aerodynamic upgrades?
The FIA restricts aerodynamic testing through limits on wind-tunnel runs, wind-on time, occupancy, CFD geometry use and computing resources. The allowances are adjusted by championship position: a better-placed team receives a lower coefficient and smaller permitted totals, while a lower-ranked team receives a higher coefficient. Thus, the same reference figures do not mean every team has the same allowance.
Recommended Free Tools
The 2026 FIA Operational Regulations, Issue 06, give the following reference limits at a 100% coefficient. The coefficient is tied to championship position and ranges from 70% for the champion to 115% for tenth place or a new team. A team’s actual allowance depends on the coefficient applicable to it and the relevant period.

| Restricted activity or resource | Reference value at 100% coefficient | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Wind-tunnel runs | 320 | Reference total; the applicable team allowance varies with its coefficient. |
| Wind-on time | 80 hours | Reference limit, not a universal allowance for every team. |
| Wind-tunnel occupancy | 400 hours | Reference limit; the team coefficient affects the permitted total. |
| CFD geometries | 2,000 | Reference limit, subject to the applicable coefficient. |
| Computing resources | 6 MAUh | Reference value at 100%; actual limits depend on the team’s coefficient. |
These figures come from the FIA’s 2026 Operational Regulations, Issue 06, dated 27 February 2026. They are regulatory reference values, not a claim about the amount any particular team used. The coefficient range and championship adjustment mean that a comparison between teams must account for their positions and the relevant period.
For an upgrade decision, this system creates a trade-off: time and compute spent on one aerodynamic question are resources unavailable for another within the applicable limits. The regulation establishes the limits, but public sources do not reveal how each team internally prioritizes projects or allocates its permitted activity.
How does the FIA check whether an upgrade is legal?
A part must satisfy the technical rules as raced, and the FIA can check it during an event. The 2025 front-wing flexibility changes are a useful example of how compliance tests can be tightened during a season. From the Spanish Grand Prix in 2025, Formula 1 reported limits of 10 mm of deflection under a symmetrical 100 kg load and 15 mm under a one-sided 100 kg load. The permitted trailing-edge flap deflection under a 6 kg point load fell from 5 mm to 3 mm.

The FIA said it would check components regularly, sometimes in isolation and sometimes on the car. FIA Single Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis explained that checks could occur in parc fermé, after qualifying or on Sunday morning, and sometimes after a race. The practical implication is that compliance needs to hold in the configuration used in competition, not just in a separate component assessment.

Those numbers describe the 2025 front-wing directive, not 2026 requirements. They should not be carried forward as current limits without checking the rules applicable to the season in question. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are power-unit upgrades treated differently?
Power-unit changes are not simply another aerodynamic update. The 2026 Technical Regulations set homologation requirements, and ADUO can provide additional homologation upgrade opportunities when a manufacturer’s internal-combustion engine (ICE) performance index falls sufficiently behind the leader in a defined review period.
| ICE performance index position relative to leader | Additional homologation opportunities |
|---|---|
| At least 2% but less than 4% behind | One additional upgrade in season N and one in season N+1. |
| At least 4% behind | Two additional upgrades in season N and two in season N+1. |
These eligibility bands come from the FIA’s 2026 Technical Regulations, Section C, Issue 16, dated 27 February 2026. An upgrade awarded for the current season is forfeited if it is not introduced by that season’s final competition. The mechanism therefore creates an opportunity, not an automatic requirement that a manufacturer use every available upgrade.
What did the FIA announce for the 2026 review periods?
After the first review period of 2026, Mercedes qualified for one additional homologation in 2026 and one in 2027. Audi, Ferrari and Honda qualified for two in each of those years. No manufacturer received additional homologations after the second review period. The FIA reported that the underlying performance-index measurements are confidential, so these eligibility outcomes do not establish exact engine performance gaps.

The FIA’s announcement of the first and second 2026 ADUO review results gives the outcomes and explains the disclosure limit. A manufacturer’s eligibility can be reported, but a reader should not infer a precise percentage gap beyond the official qualifying band.
What ADUO is—and is not
Tombazis described the purpose of the system to Formula 1 as follows: “It is, in fact, a cost cap relief mechanism, where a PU manufacturer meeting ADUO criteria during a review period is given an opportunity to develop its engine through a downward adjustment.” The explanation also makes clear that ADUO is not a balance-of-performance mechanism: eligible manufacturers still need to develop the best engine to win. The system’s purpose is to provide qualifying manufacturers a development opportunity, not to guarantee equal performance. Formula 1’s ADUO explainer includes Tombazis’s explanation.
When do teams bring upgrades to a race?
There is no single publicly established calendar date or race that applies to ordinary upgrades across all teams. A team must weigh its predicted gain and validation confidence against reliability risk, production lead time, spares availability, aerodynamic testing limits and the applicable regulations. A part intended for a particular event also has to be ready for the competition configuration and capable of passing the relevant checks.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Public accounts can show that facilities support current- and future-car work at once, as in Aston Martin’s 2025 description of its wind tunnel. They do not disclose every team’s internal schedule, the point at which it freezes a design, or the exact evidence needed for a track introduction. Treat claims about a universal upgrade cadence or mandatory sign-off sequence cautiously unless a team or engineer has documented that process directly.
What should you look for when assessing an upgrade?
When judging whether a reported update is likely to matter, separate the engineering claim from the regulatory opportunity and from the result on track. A new component may be intended to improve performance, but the available public information may not establish its measured gain, reliability effect or validation confidence. Likewise, a testing allowance is not evidence that a team used all of it, and eligibility for an ADUO homologation does not disclose an exact engine deficit.

- Purpose: Is the stated aim performance, reliability or both?
- Validation: Is there evidence of measured behavior, or only a design intention? Do not assume a universal correlation threshold.
- Timing: Does the account identify when the part is expected to be ready, or is its introduction date unstated?
- Rules: Is the claim about aerodynamic testing limits, component legality or power-unit homologation? They are different constraints.
- Season and version: Are the quoted figures from the applicable year? The cited front-wing limits are from 2025; the aerodynamic reference limits and ADUO thresholds above are from 2026 rules.
