Toyota also rates the 2024 model to tow up to 6,000 pounds and estimates 23 mpg combined. Those figures make the powertrain more convincing on paper than engine displacement alone suggests—but they do not settle questions about sound, driving feel, or long-term reliability.
What the four-cylinder hybrid actually delivers
The 2024 U.S. Land Cruiser uses Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX system: a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. Toyota’s announced figures are 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of combined system output; they are not the gasoline engine’s output by itself. Toyota’s 2023 announcement of the 2024 Land Cruiser gives those system figures.
The distinction matters. A hybrid powertrain’s combined output describes the system, not how either component performs in isolation or what the vehicle sounds and feels like in every situation. Still, it gives a clearer picture of the Land Cruiser’s intended capability than the phrase “four-cylinder” does on its own.
Why the capability case is more than a horsepower figure
Toyota lists a 6,000-pound maximum tow rating and an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined for the 2024 U.S. model. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not guarantees of what every driver will achieve; actual fuel economy and towing suitability depend on conditions and configuration. Toyota’s 2024 Land Cruiser overview also describes full-time four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case, and center and rear locking differentials.

That hardware puts the engine in context. The Land Cruiser is a body-on-frame SUV designed around four-wheel-drive and off-road equipment, so assessing it solely by cylinder count misses other parts of its intended job. The stated tow rating and drivetrain features make a meaningful capability case, though they do not establish how the vehicle will feel under every load or on every trail.
The caveat: the numbers do not tell you how it sounds or feels
Consumer Reports’ road test of a 2024 Land Cruiser reported 20 mpg overall in its test and identified excessive noise and vibration as drawbacks. That 20 mpg figure is the publication’s test result, not the EPA estimate and not a general owner average. Its comments about noise and vibration are the publication’s assessment of the tested vehicle, not proof that every owner will have the same impression. Peak combined horsepower and torque cannot answer whether the engine’s sound is pleasing, how its response feels in a particular driving situation, or how it behaves under sustained load. Those are separate questions from whether the published output and tow rating look substantial.
Does this settle the reliability question?
No. The available model-specific evidence here establishes Toyota’s power and capability specifications and one publication’s road-test impressions; it does not establish long-term reliability for this powertrain. A concern voiced in an owner discussion—how confident buyers should be in a 2.4-liter turbo hybrid making 326 hp—is evidence that the question matters to shoppers, not evidence that the system is reliable or unreliable. The discussion title captures that concern but cannot resolve it.

It is reasonable to separate the buying decision into what is documented and what remains uncertain: Toyota’s combined output and equipment are stated specifications; Consumer Reports supplies a test result and a subjective critique; neither is a longitudinal reliability study of the 2024 Land Cruiser’s i-FORCE MAX system. Do not treat brand reputation, power figures, or a short road test as a durability verdict.
Is the four-cylinder still current in the U.S. Land Cruiser?
The powertrain is not merely a 2024 specification. Toyota’s 2026 U.S. brochure continues to list a turbocharged four-cylinder i-FORCE MAX system with 326 net combined hp and 465 lb-ft. Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser brochure supports that current U.S.-market figure. Land Cruiser powertrains vary by market: Toyota’s European material describes a 2.8-liter diesel, so the U.S. figures should not be generalized worldwide.

Verdict: not a letdown on paper, but not a verdict on every concern
The 2024 U.S. Land Cruiser’s four-cylinder hybrid has a credible paper case: Toyota’s combined system output, tow rating, fuel-economy estimate, and off-road hardware all make engine size alone an incomplete measure. The strongest counterpoint is experiential: Consumer Reports found the tested vehicle noisy and vibratory and recorded lower fuel economy than Toyota’s EPA estimate. Whether that trade-off feels acceptable is a driving preference; long-term reliability remains unresolved by these sources.
