Honda’s Reusable Rocket Test: What the 2025 Landing Actually Proved

Honda’s experimental rocket flew for 56.6 seconds and landed within 37 centimeters of its target. The test advanced reusable-rocket research, but did not demonstrate an orbital launch or put Honda on par with SpaceX.

Honda successfully launched and landed an experimental rocket in a 56.6-second test—but it was a 271.4-meter hop, not an orbital flight. The June 17, 2025 test in Taiki, Hokkaido, demonstrated landing and control technologies that could support Honda’s longer-term goal of reusable rockets for carrying satellites. It did not show that Honda has an operational launch system or has caught up with SpaceX.

What happened in Honda’s rocket test?

Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s research and development subsidiary, conducted the test on June 17, 2025, in Taiki, Hokkaido, Japan. The company reported that its experimental rocket reached a maximum altitude of 271.4 meters, then landed within 37 centimeters of its target after 56.6 seconds in flight. Honda described it as the first time it had landed a rocket after reaching nearly 300 meters. Honda’s announcement gives the flight figures.

The Japanese Cabinet Office’s Seventh Space Development and Utilization Award document describes the achievement as Japan’s first successful launch-and-landing test of an experimental rocket conducted by a private company. It repeats Honda’s altitude, touchdown accuracy and flight-duration figures; it does not provide a separate independent measurement of the flight.

How big was the rocket, and what did the test prove?

The demonstrator was 6.3 meters long and 85 centimeters in diameter. Honda reported its mass as 900 kilograms dry and 1,312 kilograms wet. Those dimensions and the short flight put the accomplishment in context: this was a compact experimental vehicle performing a controlled hop, not a rocket demonstrated in an orbital launch mission. Honda’s announcement reports the vehicle specifications.

The test focused on technologies Honda considers important for reusable rockets: stability during ascent and descent, the ability to land, and gathering flight data. A precise touchdown on a short test flight is meaningful evidence of progress on those tasks. It does not establish that the vehicle can reach orbit, deliver a satellite, or fly repeatedly as part of a commercial service.

Why did Honda use a turbopump on such a short flight?

Honda engineers said the demonstrator used a turbopump to deliver methane and oxygen to the engine’s combustor. In a company interview, Chief Engineer Kenichiro Ikeya said the rocket could have reached the tested altitude without a turbopump, but Honda included one because it would eventually be necessary for the company’s goal of delivering satellites into space. Honda’s September 30, 2025 engineering interview explains the choice.

Honda says it began space research in 2019 and is working in three areas: a circulative renewable-energy system, space robotics and sustainable rockets. Its stated ambition is a reusable vehicle powered by renewable fuel to transport satellites and other payloads. That is a longer-term research goal, not a description of the 2025 flight: the cited materials do not establish that the test rocket used renewable fuel.

Honda’s engineers have described bringing experience in combustion and airframe control from automotive work, HondaJet and Formula 1 to the effort. That background may inform the company’s engineering approach, but it does not by itself demonstrate launch capability.

Is Honda competing with SpaceX?

Not on the evidence of this test. Honda demonstrated a controlled hop of 271.4 meters; its stated destination is a reusable vehicle capable of taking payloads to space. SpaceX’s official reusability page describes a rocket recovery and reusability program, but the available sources do not provide a like-for-like performance comparison. The difference in demonstrated mission and operational maturity is substantial: Honda’s test was experimental and low-altitude, and it did not demonstrate an orbital launch or an operational reusable launch system.

Honda engineer Junichiro Ishimura, Chief Engineer and Sustainable Rocket Project Manager, said, “Even if the technological hurdles are high, we believe we should strive for sustainable reusability rather than discarding rockets after each use.” That is Honda’s stated rationale for pursuing the work, not an independent assessment of how soon the company might reach its goal. The interview attributes the statement to Ishimura.
