They refer to different years, markets and versions, and some are estimates rather than measured results. The official claims that can be compared cautiously include the 1999 S2000 at 241 km/h, European Civic Type R figures of 270 and 272 km/h for different model years, and an approximately 170-mph track figure for the 2017 U.S. Civic Type R.
Why a ten-car Honda top-speed ranking needs a clear scope
“Honda sports car” can mean Honda-badged cars sold worldwide, or it can include Acura-badged U.S. models. A ranking also needs to decide whether different generations and special trims count as separate entries, and whether it compares manufacturer claims or independently measured speeds. Those choices matter: the figures below are manufacturer statements from different markets and years, not results from a single test.
Accordingly, the figures here are a sourced comparison, not a ranked list of ten. Honda’s available material supports several specific claims, but not a defensible ten-car order. A model’s power, reputation or place in Honda history cannot fill in a missing top-speed specification.

Conversions are approximate. The 2017 U.S. figure is close to the 2020 European Civic Type R’s published number, but the underlying claims differ in market, wording and context. Treating them as directly measured competitors would imply a precision the sources do not establish.

What Honda’s Type R history adds—and what it does not
Honda’s Type R timeline identifies the Japan-market NSX Type R, available from 1992 to 1995, as the first Honda to wear the red Type R badge. Honda lists that version with a 3.0-liter DOHC V6, 270 hp and a five-speed manual. The timeline also documents later NSX Type R versions and early Integra Type R models, but it does not provide top-speed claims for them. Why the 2026 Prelude is not in this speed comparison
Honda’s July 2025 announcement describes the 2026 Prelude as an electrified hybrid grand touring sports coupe with suspension and brakes derived from the Civic Type R. The announcement does not state a top speed, so it supplies no comparable figure for a speed order. Honda, July 2025

What a complete ranking would need
Before calling a list the ten fastest, each entry needs a top-speed source tied to its exact year, generation, trim and market. The comparison must also distinguish Honda from Acura branding, manufacturer-published claims from independently tested speeds, and ordinary production specifications from track-only or electronically limited figures where a source identifies those conditions. Without those details, a neat numbered ranking would conceal rather than resolve the differences.
