2WD drives two wheels; 4WD can drive all four. That difference can help a vehicle find traction on certain slippery or off-road surfaces, but it does not make every 4WD vehicle suitable for every condition. The labels, controls and limits vary by model, so the useful comparison is how each vehicle’s system works and where its maker says to use it.

What 2WD and 4WD mean

2WD: power goes to two wheels

Two-wheel drive means the drivetrain sends power to two wheels. The label alone does not tell you whether those are the front wheels or the rear wheels; check the configuration of the specific vehicle.

4WD: power can go to both axles

Four-wheel drive can send power to wheels on both axles. In a selectable system, the driver may choose between modes intended for different conditions. That does not mean every 4WD system works the same way, or that all four wheels receive power in the same manner at all times.

What 2H, 4H and 4L do in a selectable 4WD system

The U.S.-market 2024 Toyota Tacoma owner’s manual is a concrete example of one selectable system. Its mode names and directions are specific to that vehicle; other models can have different labels and procedures.

Mode Purpose in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Important qualification
2H Ordinary two-wheel-drive operation. Toyota says this position gives “greater economy, quietest ride and least wear.” This is Toyota’s description of the Tacoma’s 2H position, not a guarantee that every 2WD vehicle will have those advantages to the same degree.
4H High-range 4WD for tracks or roads that permit tire slip, including off-road, icy or snow-covered surfaces. Toyota warns not to shift from 2H to 4H while the wheels are slipping. Follow the manual’s model-specific shifting instructions.
4L Low-range gearing for maximum power and traction in demanding, low-speed situations such as steep hills, off-road driving, or hard pulling in sand, mud or deep snow. For the 2024 Tacoma, the specified procedure requires stopping the vehicle and putting the transmission in Neutral. Do not assume this procedure applies to another vehicle.

These mode descriptions come from the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Owner’s Manual. Use the owner’s manual for the vehicle you drive before changing modes.

How 4WD differs from AWD

AWD and 4WD are related labels for systems that can drive both axles, but manufacturers do not use them as perfectly standardized descriptions of one universal design. For example, Ford describes an AWD implementation that monitors sensor inputs and uses a clutch to transfer torque without requiring the driver to activate it. That is an example of a Ford system, not a definition that applies to every AWD vehicle. Toyota also presents AWD vehicles separately from its 4WD trucks.

  • FUNCTION: The 4WD Transfer Case Actuator is a part of the transfer case that controls the vehicle to switch into and out of 4x4 drive. Four-wheel drive allows all four wheels of a vehicle to receive power from the engine. Encoder Motor helps with traction and is commonly used in wet, snowy, off-road, or deep puddles areas.
  • MATERIAL: The transfer case shift motor is made of durable metal, with waterproof and anti-corrosion housing. Direct replacement, easy to install. Solve incorrect wiring problems and water leaks.
  • PACKAGE INCLUDED: 1 x Transfer Case Motor, 2 x Screws. Note: Please carefully check your vehicle year/make/model and OE number with our description and pictures before purchasing.

Rather than relying on the badge, check whether the system is automatic or driver-selectable, which wheels can receive torque and under what conditions, what surfaces the manufacturer specifies, and whether the vehicle has a low-range mode. Ford’s explanation is in its AWD glossary; Toyota’s lineup distinction appears on its All-Wheel Drive Vehicles page.

When 4WD may be useful—and what it does not guarantee

Driving more wheels can improve traction in relevant conditions, which is why a selectable system may offer a mode for slippery surfaces or low-range gearing for demanding off-road work. The appropriate mode depends on the vehicle and the surface: for instance, Toyota specifies 4H for certain slippery or off-road conditions and reserves the Tacoma’s 4L for low-speed, demanding situations.

  • Transfer Case Shift Motor is a part of some vehicle' s four-wheel drive (4WD) system and is responsible for switching between the vehicle's different two and four-wheel drive options. It is a small electric motor that moves parts within the transfer case itself to activate the various modes of the 4WD system.
  • If your transfer case motor is not functioning, then you may not be able to shift into or out of 4WD, which could be a big problem. Therefore, getting it replaced quickly is vital. Transfer case shift motor can fail for a number of reasons. Due to its location underneath the body of the vehicle, it can suffer corrosion from road salt or dirt (especially if you take the vehicle off road frequently). The motor can also get damaged from road debris, as well as simply wear out and over time.
  • This Transfer Case Encoder Motor Fits for the Following Vehicles: 2007 Chevy Avalanche, 2003-2006 Chevy Avalanche 1500, 2003-2007 Chevy Silverado 1500, 2005-2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 HD, 2003-2004 Chevy Silverado 2500, 2003-2006 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, 2007 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Classic, 2003-2007 Chevy Suburban 1500 & 2500, 2003-2007 Chevy Tahoe, 2003-2007 GMC Sierra 1500, 2003-2007 GMC Yukon XL 2500, 2003-2007 Cadillac Escalade, ESV, EXT, 2006-2010 Dodge Ram 1500 and see more vehicles.
  • Customers can find the product you need accurately according to the OE number. OE part number: 19125571, 600910, 600-910, 88962314, 19125640, 5170543AA.
  • ATTENTION: Refer to the appropriate shop manual for your vehicle to obtain specific service procedures for this parts. Pay special attention to all cautions and warnings included in the shop manual. Please Read Before Installation! - Do not apply electrical power to Transfer Case Motor before installation on vehicle. If shafts do not align, manually adjust the shaft of the vehicle transfer case only. Do not change the position of the Transfer Case Motor output shaft before installation.

4WD is not a blanket guarantee of safety, and drivetrain alone does not establish how a vehicle will behave on ice. It is not a substitute for suitable driving, tires or the vehicle maker’s operating instructions. Choose a mode only within the conditions and limits described in the specific owner’s manual.

Fuel economy and ownership trade-offs

AWD and 4WD hardware can add weight and mechanical friction, which may negatively affect fuel economy. Manufacturers have made improvements to reduce that impact, but there is no single fuel-economy penalty that applies to every 2WD/4WD comparison. The U.S. Department of Energy explains the trade-off in its February 13, 2023 drivetrain overview.

For a useful comparison, look at fuel-economy ratings for the same vehicle, engine, trim and model year. Also check equivalent trims and model years when comparing price or availability, since drivetrain choices differ across lineups.

For context, the U.S. Department of Energy reported that 59% of light-duty vehicles produced in the United States in 2022 had AWD or 4WD; the 2022 figure was marked preliminary. The statistic is about U.S. production, not worldwide sales or a measure of which system is best for an individual driver.
