Short answer: In the United States, Hyundai advertises longer basic and powertrain warranty terms than Honda, while the evidence does not establish a universal winner for reliability, safety, driving or ownership cost. The useful comparison is between similar models, model years and trims: a Civic and Elantra, for example, answer a different question from a Pilot and Palisade.
Compare equivalent vehicles, not badges
Honda’s U.S. comparison index pairs vehicles including the Accord and Sonata, Civic and Elantra, CR-V and Tucson, Passport and Santa Fe, and Pilot and Palisade. It also presents hybrid matchups. The index is useful for identifying candidates, but it is published by Honda and should not be treated as a neutral verdict: Honda’s comparison index.
For a fair comparison, match model year and trim, then check whether both vehicles have the same kind of powertrain. A gasoline sedan and a hybrid sedan may differ in price, fuel economy and equipment enough to change the decision. The specific candidates to start with include the 2026 Honda Accord versus 2026 Hyundai Sonata, 2026 Civic Sedan versus 2026 Elantra, and 2026 CR-V versus 2026 Tucson.
Small cars: Civic and Elantra
Compare the exact sedan or hatchback configuration and, where relevant, hybrid trims separately. Starting prices alone do not establish value: equipment, incentives, fuel economy and the price of the particular trim matter.

Midsize sedans: Accord and Sonata
Keep gasoline and hybrid versions distinct. Compare the features and powertrain you would actually buy rather than transferring a conclusion from one version to the whole model line.
Compact SUVs: CR-V and Tucson
Match hybrid with hybrid when that is the intended purchase, and compare passenger and cargo needs alongside price and fuel economy. A model-level comparison is more informative than a brand-wide claim.

These are not all interchangeable. Consider seating configuration, cargo space and powertrain requirements before treating one as an alternative to another; the right shortlist depends on how many people and how much gear the vehicle must carry.
Warranty: Hyundai advertises longer terms
Hyundai USA’s warranty page lists a 5-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. Its comparison table lists Honda at 3 years/36,000 miles for basic coverage and 5 years/60,000 miles for powertrain coverage: Hyundai’s warranty comparison.

These are limited warranties, not unconditional promises of coverage. The advertised terms do not mean that every used-car buyer receives the original owner’s full powertrain term. Coverage and eligibility can depend on ownership status, mileage, exclusions and the exact vehicle. Read the applicable warranty handbook and confirm the terms for the specific VIN before assigning a dollar value to the difference.
Reliability, resale and price: evidence is sample-specific
iSeeCars’ brand comparison reports Honda ahead in reliability in 6 of 6 sampled model comparisons. In that same comparison, Hyundai had lower new starting prices in 9 of 14 sampled model comparisons. Those counts describe the models and methods in iSeeCars’ analysis; they are not guarantees about every Honda or Hyundai, nor a complete calculation of what a buyer will spend over a vehicle’s life: iSeeCars’ Honda-versus-Hyundai comparison.

iSeeCars also reports Honda advantages on several of its sampled depreciation, used-price and safety measures, while Hyundai has advantages in sampled fuel economy and towing comparisons. Each finding depends on the models and measures included. The source set does not establish a neutral, comprehensive current reliability ranking across every model from both brands or an aggregate lifetime ownership-cost figure.
For your own decision, compare the exact trim’s purchase price after local incentives, expected fuel use, insurance quotes, maintenance needs, likely resale and how long you plan to keep it. A lower starting price may not mean lower total cost, and a longer warranty does not by itself establish lower repair risk or ownership expense.

Safety depends on model year, size and build date
IIHS safety awards apply to qualifying vehicles within size categories and a given award year—not to a brand as a whole. Its Hyundai listings include several 2025 Top Safety Pick+ recipients, including the Elantra, Ioniq 6, Sonata, Ioniq 5, Kona, Tucson and Santa Fe; some entries have model-year or build-date qualifications. Check the award page for the exact vehicle and conditions: IIHS’s 2025 Hyundai award listing. IIHS explains that “These awards identify the best vehicle choices for safety within size categories during a given year.”
A May 27, 2026 joint list from IIHS and Consumer Reports recommended several Hyundai models and the Honda Passport among its 2026 teen-vehicle choices. That list combines IIHS award status with Consumer Reports’ safety judgment; it is a curated list, not a ranking of all Honda and Hyundai vehicles: The 2026 IIHS and Consumer Reports teen-vehicle list.
When comparing two finalists, check the crash ratings and active-safety equipment for the exact model year and trim, as well as any build-date restriction. An award earned by one version does not automatically establish the result for another year or configuration.
How to choose between Honda and Hyundai
- Choose two or three comparable vehicles. Start with matching body styles and similar model years; separate hybrids from gasoline versions.
- Compare the actual trims. Check standard and optional equipment, passenger and cargo utility, and the final local price after incentives.
- Verify warranty eligibility. Read the terms for the specific vehicle, especially if buying used, and confirm what coverage remains.
- Check model-specific safety information. Use the exact model year, trim and build date when reviewing ratings and award qualifications.
- Estimate the ownership factors that matter to you. Get insurance quotes, compare fuel economy for your driving, consider expected resale and set your likely ownership horizon.
- Drive the finalists. A test drive can help resolve differences in visibility, seating, controls and ride that a brand-level comparison cannot.
The available evidence supports a clear warranty distinction and useful directional comparisons, but not a categorical claim that one brand is always safer, more reliable, cheaper to own or better to drive. The best choice turns on the particular vehicles and the buyer’s priorities.
