What the Honda sticky-steering recall covers
Honda and Acura recalled 1,693,199 vehicles in the United States under recall 24V-744 because a steering-gearbox defect can increase steering effort and raise the risk of a crash. The affected population includes certain 2022–2025 Honda Civic, Civic Hatchback, Civic Type R, CR-V and HR-V vehicles, certain 2025 Civic hybrid and CR-V Fuel Cell EV models, and certain 2023–2025 Acura Integra vehicles.

The repair is free at an authorized Honda or Acura dealer. Technicians replace parts inside the electric-power-steering gearbox and redistribute or add grease as required by the repair procedure. A model-year match alone does not prove that a vehicle is involved: owners must check the vehicle’s identification number, or VIN, for an open recall.
What “sticky steering” feels like
“Sticky” does not mean the steering wheel is literally adhesive or that the problem is cosmetic. It describes a momentary increase in steering effort or a notchy, unsmooth feeling as the driver turns the wheel. NHTSA’s investigation said the condition was primarily reported at highway speeds after the vehicle had been driven for some time.
Some drivers may also notice abnormal steering noise. The safety concern is that steering effort could suddenly increase while the vehicle is moving. A driver might overcorrect, have trouble avoiding a road hazard, or lose the ability to make an expected steering maneuver. NHTSA’s initial investigation reported no crashes or injuries associated with the complaints at that stage, and Honda’s recall filing reported no injuries or deaths in the related warranty claims as of September 26, 2024. That does not make the condition safe to ignore.

This is a list of potentially affected vehicle populations, not a declaration that every vehicle of those models is defective. Build configuration and VIN determine whether a particular vehicle has an open recall. Owners should use Honda’s recall lookup and NHTSA’s VIN lookup rather than relying on the model and year alone. The same check is especially important when buying a used Honda or Acura.
What owners should do now
- Run a VIN-specific recall search. Use Honda’s or Acura’s official recall tool, or NHTSA’s VIN lookup. The VIN is usually visible through the driver-side windshield or on the driver’s door-jamb label.
- Confirm the campaign. Recall 24V-744 may appear under Honda or Acura campaign identifiers SJS, MJU, QJT or VJV.
- Schedule the repair with an authorized dealer. The safety-recall remedy is free. When making the appointment, describe any steering resistance, noise or notchy feel and ask whether the campaign parts are available.
- Do not attempt the repair yourself. This is an internal steering-gearbox procedure, not a consumer lubrication job. Honda’s service information is intended for trained technicians using proper tools and equipment.
- Keep your paperwork. Save the repair order and invoices. Honda’s recall filing says owners who previously paid for a related repair may be eligible for reimbursement under the recall reimbursement plan; ask Honda about eligibility.
Important: The recall repair itself is free, and this article is not a substitute for an official VIN check or a dealer diagnosis. Check your Honda or Acura recall by VIN before assuming the vehicle is covered.

Why the steering can become difficult
The affected vehicles use electric power steering with a gearbox containing a worm gear, a worm wheel and a spring that controls preload between the gears. In plain language, the worm gear turns the worm wheel to help transmit the driver’s steering input.

- Worm-wheel deformation: The worm wheel could swell during use because of the way it was produced. That changes the angle and pressure where the gear teeth meet, increasing surface pressure and reducing the thickness of the grease film between the parts.
- Excessive spring preload: The worm-gear spring was set with too much preload. That increases sliding load and torque fluctuation inside the gearbox.
Together, those conditions can increase internal friction. The result may be a steering wheel that does not turn as smoothly as expected or that briefly requires more force, particularly after extended operation. This explanation also shows why applying an easily accessible lubricant elsewhere on the vehicle is not an appropriate substitute for the recall repair: the affected components are inside the steering gearbox, and the remedy requires specific parts and grease placement.
What the dealer repair involves
The remedy is not a steering-wheel accessory, an OBD software update or a generic under-hood lubrication service. The technician repairs the electric-power-steering gearbox by replacing the worm-gear spring with an improved part and redistributing or adding grease according to Honda’s procedure.

The exact work depends on the vehicle and campaign instructions. Owners should not disassemble the gearbox or try to adjust spring preload at home.
If the steering still feels abnormal after a recall repair, return to the dealer and describe exactly when the symptom occurs: cold or warm, at highway or low speed, during left or right turns, and whether noise or warning lights appear. A post-repair complaint does not automatically prove that the recall remedy failed. It could involve a separate steering fault, an individual repair issue or an unresolved symptom requiring diagnosis.

How Honda and NHTSA reached the recall
- September 9, 2021: Honda received its first confirmed complaint related to the condition.
- November 23, 2022: Honda began investigating after receiving a market-quality report.
- March 17, 2023: NHTSA opened preliminary evaluation PE23-005, initially covering an estimated 238,271 2022–2023 Civics and citing 145 complaints.
- November 29, 2023: NHTSA upgraded the investigation to engineering analysis EA23003.
- During the investigation: Honda found deformation of worm-wheel teeth and revised the worm-wheel mold process. Later market reports and returned parts indicated that the condition remained significant.
- September 26, 2024: Honda determined that a safety defect existed and decided to conduct the recall.
- January 28, 2025: NHTSA closed engineering analysis EA23003 after recall 24V-744 was established.
Honda reported 10,328 warranty claims related to the issue between September 9, 2021, and September 19, 2024. The company’s filing reported no injuries or deaths in those claims as of September 26, 2024.
Was the problem fixed in production?
Honda reported that the supplier revised the worm-wheel pressure-angle control value, spring-load specification and grease-application process. Steering gearboxes with reduced friction and load entered production beginning August 30, 2024.
That production-change date is useful background but cannot replace a VIN search. Recall coverage depends on the vehicle’s identification and build configuration, so owners of a vehicle built around that date should still check for an open campaign.
How many vehicles have been repaired?
Recall completion figures change as dealers perform repairs. An early quarterly report listed 321,687 vehicles remedied, 15,009 unreachable and 15,241 removed from the recall population for the fourth quarter of 2024. That is a historical report and should not be presented as the current completion rate.

A 2025 NHTSA annual recall report, using a February 2026 reference point, still listed 24V-744 among recalls for which more than 60 days had elapsed and no remedy had been made available as of that report. That is a compliance snapshot, not proof that every affected vehicle remained unrepaired. The practical answer for an individual owner remains the same: check the VIN, contact an authorized dealer and verify that the repair has been completed.

If the wheel suddenly requires noticeably more effort, keep both hands on the wheel, slow down smoothly when safe, avoid abrupt corrections and move to a safe location. Do not continue unnecessary driving if steering resistance is substantial or recurring. Contact Honda or Acura, an authorized dealer or appropriate roadside assistance and explain that the vehicle may be affected by recall 24V-744.
