The clever part was how the tent added overnight space while the vehicle’s stored height remained under two metres, according to Honda’s launch specifications.
What is the Honda Step WGN Field Deck?
Field Deck was a camping-oriented version of Honda’s first-generation Step WGN, announced for the Japanese market on January 22, 1998. Honda said Honda Tokuso developed it from a Step WGN with a double sunroof. It is a specific historical model, not a generic name for a current Honda minivan. Honda’s Japanese launch announcement and its English-language release describe the original configuration.
How did the pop-up roof work?
Honda described the pop-up tent roof as sleeping space for up to two adults. The roof section had entrances at both the front and rear, so a person could enter or leave without having to climb over someone already sleeping. Screened windows were provided at the front and on both sides of the tent.
That layout made the Field Deck a compact minivan with an additional sleeping area above the cabin, rather than a large motorhome. The available Honda information establishes the intended capacity and access features; it does not provide details such as mattress dimensions or a modern safety rating for the tent.

How tall was it with the roof stored?
Honda gave the stored overall height as 1,955 mm for the standard configuration and 1,970 mm for the 4WD version. Honda said that height allowed the vehicle to use large multi-story parking bays. These are specifications and a parking claim from the 1998 launch announcement; they should not be assumed to apply to later Step WGN generations or to every present-day garage.
Was it a production vehicle or a one-off concept?
Honda announced the Field Deck as a model and set a domestic annual sales target of 1,000 units. That figure was a planned target, not a report of actual sales, and it does not establish how many were sold or how popular the vehicle became.

Are Step WGN pop-up campers still available?
A White House Camper price-list PDF lists later Step WGN camper configurations, including pop-up-roof and DECK ONE variants with sleeping options. The listing shows that camper conversions have existed beyond the original 1998 Field Deck, but it does not confirm that those versions can currently be ordered or are in stock.
The historical model’s existence and original features are documented by Honda; current availability, condition, pricing, import legality and ownership costs are not established by the cited material. Anyone considering one would need to verify the particular vehicle, its market and registration requirements, and the seller’s current offering.

How does it fit into Step WGN history?
The Field Deck belongs to the first generation of Step WGN. Honda’s Step WGN first-generation design history provides context for that generation, while a Honda dealer’s current Step WGN page concerns a contemporary vehicle, not the 1998 Field Deck. The shared name should not be taken to mean that the original tent system is offered on the current model.
