For a Honda Rebel 500, start with the owner’s manual for your exact model year, configuration, and market: service intervals and specifications can differ. The checklist below uses Honda’s U.S. 2021 Rebel 500 manual as a clearly labeled example, not as a verified schedule for every Rebel 500. That manual calls for a first scheduled service at 600 miles (1,000 km), regular pre-ride and monthly checks, and time-based fluid replacements. Find the correct manual through Honda’s owner’s manual finder and use its maintenance table for the exact tasks due at each odometer reading.
Confirm the schedule for your motorcycle
Before setting reminders or buying fluids, identify your Rebel’s model year and configuration, then consult the maintenance section of its owner’s manual. Honda’s U.S. manual finder lets owners select a year and model. Honda also says it highly recommends service through an authorized Honda dealer. The detailed intervals and specifications in this checklist are from the U.S. 2021 Rebel 500 (CMX500/A/A2) owner’s manual. Honda lists later Rebel 500 model years, but the 2021 schedule has not been established here as unchanged for every later year, market, or configuration.

Honda says its maintenance intervals are based on average riding conditions. Unusually wet or dusty riding, or riding at full throttle, can require more frequent service. The 2021 manual specifically calls for more frequent air-cleaner service in unusually wet or dusty areas and crankcase-breather service in rain or at full throttle. Ask a Honda dealer what adjustments are appropriate for your use rather than extending or shortening other intervals by guesswork.

The 2021 manual’s main distance checkpoints begin with the first service at 600 miles (1,000 km), followed by 4,000-mile (6,400-km) increments through 24,000 miles (38,400 km). The maintenance record continues in 4,000-mile increments beyond that. At higher odometer readings, Honda says to repeat the established frequency. Use the manual’s full maintenance table to identify what is due at each checkpoint; the checkpoints alone do not tell you which tasks to perform.
#1 Best Overall
- For best performance, follow the manufacturer's recommendations in your vehicle owner’s manual
| 2021 U.S. manual checkpoint | What to do |
|---|---|
| 600 mi (1,000 km) | Complete the tasks marked for the initial service in the 2021 manual. |
| 4,000 mi (6,400 km) | Check the maintenance table for tasks marked at this mileage. |
| 8,000 mi (12,800 km) | Check the maintenance table for tasks marked at this mileage. |
| 12,000 mi (19,200 km) | Check the maintenance table for tasks marked at this mileage. |
| 16,000 mi (25,600 km) | Check the maintenance table for tasks marked at this mileage. |
| 20,000 mi (32,000 km) | Check the maintenance table for tasks marked at this mileage. |
| 24,000 mi (38,400 km) | Check the maintenance table for tasks marked at this mileage; the record continues at 4,000-mile increments. |
Distance is not the only trigger. In the 2021 schedule, engine oil is replaced at the initial 600-mile service and at the mileage intervals marked in the maintenance table, as well as every year. Brake fluid is replaced every two years, and radiator coolant every three years. Follow the manual’s own table for the oil and filter mileage marks rather than deriving a new schedule from the checkpoint list.
Use a practical checking rhythm
Before every ride
Honda’s 2021 pre-ride inspection covers tire tread and pressure, lights, horn, turn signals, and drive-chain condition. The manual instructs the rider to correct problems found before riding. If the chain needs attention, check its slack and lubricate it as needed using the model-specific procedure. Do not treat a warning sign as something to defer until the next mileage service.
- Check tire condition and pressure before setting off; use a gauge and the cold-tire method described below.
- Confirm that the lights, horn, and turn signals work.
- Inspect the drive chain for its condition and slack. Adjust and lubricate as needed, following the exact manual.
- If a check reveals a problem, correct it before riding or have the motorcycle inspected by a qualified technician.
The manual also says that, when carrying a passenger or cargo on an applicable configuration, the rider should check load limits, secure the cargo, and adjust the suspension for the load. Consult the manual for the motorcycle’s actual limits and adjustment procedure; do not assume one configuration’s figures apply to another.

At least once a month
Honda’s 2021 manual calls for periodic checks at least monthly regardless of how often the motorcycle is ridden, and more often with frequent riding. Its monthly list includes fluid levels, brake-pad wear, lights, horn and signals, clutch and throttle controls, drive-chain slack and lubrication, spare fuses, and major nuts and bolts. The manual’s list is a prompt to inspect and maintain these systems, not a substitute for its detailed service instructions.
- Review fluid levels and look for signs that a system needs attention.
- Check brake pads for wear and inspect the brake system according to the manual.
- Operate the clutch and throttle controls and check them for proper function.
- Check chain slack and lubrication; examine more than one point along the chain if checking slack.
- Confirm lights, horn, and turn signals work, and check that spare fuses are present.
- Check major nuts and bolts as Honda directs. Leave work requiring tools or skill you do not have to a dealer or qualified technician.
Check tires and chain using the 2021 specifications
Tire pressure
For the 2021 Rebel 500, Honda specifies 29 psi (200 kPa) for both the front and rear tires. Check pressure with a gauge when the tires are cold, at least monthly or whenever they look low. These are 2021 model-specific figures, not universal Rebel 500 specifications: verify the exact values and tire information for your motorcycle in its manual. Honda warns that excessively worn or improperly inflated tires can cause a crash.
A tire-pressure gauge is useful because visual inspection alone does not provide the pressure reading Honda calls for. Record the reading if that helps you track changes, but use the manual’s specifications and guidance to decide what action is needed. If a tire is visibly damaged or the pressure does not hold, do not treat simply adding air as a repair.

Drive chain
The 2021 manual calls for drive-chain service every 600 miles (1,000 km). It specifies 1–1 3/8 inches (25–35 mm) of slack, measured on the lower chain run midway between the sprockets, with the motorcycle on its side stand on firm, level ground. Check slack at several points around the chain because uneven slack can indicate kinked or binding links. Honda says not to ride if slack exceeds 1 15/16 inches (50 mm). Clean and lubricate the chain as directed in the manual.
Chain care is a recurring task, not something to assume is covered only during a larger scheduled service. For the 2021 manual, Honda names Pro Honda HP Chain Lube or an equivalent product. Confirm the correct product and method for your model year, and follow the manual’s inspection and adjustment instructions. If links bind, slack varies substantially, or you are uncertain how to adjust the chain correctly, have a dealer inspect it.
Keep time-based maintenance on the calendar
A motorcycle can reach a time-based service interval before it reaches the corresponding mileage. Track both the odometer and the date of the last service, and use whichever trigger the exact manual specifies. For the 2021 U.S. Rebel 500, Honda lists these time-based replacements:

- PREMIUM LUBRICATION: Muc-Off Motorcycle All-Weather Chain Lube is a premium synthetic formulation that ensures first-class performance.
| Item | 2021 U.S. manual interval | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | At the mileage marks in the maintenance table and every year | The table starts with oil replacement at 600 mi (1,000 km); consult its marked columns for subsequent mileage services. |
| Brake fluid | Every two years | Honda’s manual notes that replacement requires mechanical skill. |
| Radiator coolant | Every three years | Honda’s manual notes that replacement requires mechanical skill. |
The 2021 schedule also includes oil-filter replacement, air-cleaner replacement, spark plugs, valve-clearance inspection, fuel-line and throttle checks, cooling-system checks, and inspections of the brake system, brake-light switch, headlight aim, clutch system, side stand, suspension, fasteners, wheels and tires, and steering-head bearings. These do not all share one interval. Use the manual’s maintenance table to assign each item to its marked mileage or time; an abbreviated checklist cannot reliably substitute for that schedule.
Select oil and other supplies by specification
For the 2021 U.S. Rebel 500, the manual specifies engine oil with SAE 10W-30 viscosity, JASO T 903 MA classification, and API SG or higher. It excludes oils labeled energy conserving or resource conserving and names Pro Honda GN4 4-stroke oil (U.S. and Canada) or equivalent motorcycle oil. Verify your own manual before purchasing oil: these are not confirmed specifications for all model years or markets.

A capacity figure does not replace the level check.

The same manual lists Honda DOT 4 brake fluid, Pro Honda HP Coolant, and Pro Honda HP Chain Lube or equivalent. Check the applicable manual before selecting fluids or lubricant. Product compatibility and availability depend on the motorcycle and market, so a product name in one year’s manual should not be generalized to every Rebel 500.

Honda says maintenance should meet its standards and specifications and be performed by properly trained and equipped technicians. In the 2021 manual, some tasks are classed as intermediate and are dealer-recommended unless the owner has the required tools and mechanical skill; technical maintenance should be left to a dealer in the interest of safety. Brake-fluid and coolant replacement are examples where the manual specifically notes the need for mechanical skill.
| Service path | Use it when | Recordkeeping |
|---|---|---|
| Owner checks or maintenance | You can follow the exact manual procedure and have the specified tools and mechanical skill for the task. | Record the date, odometer, work performed, and parts or fluids used; keep receipts. |
| Authorized Honda dealer | The manual identifies the task as technical or dealer-recommended, you lack the necessary tools or skill, or a safety-related problem needs diagnosis. | Keep the service documents and receipts with the motorcycle’s maintenance history. |
| Independent repair facility | You choose a qualified independent facility for work you do not perform yourself. | Honda recommends Genuine Honda Parts and retaining receipts in case they are requested for a warranty concern. |
Honda recommends authorized-dealer service generally. Its FAQ also says maintenance expenses are the consumer’s responsibility; do not assume routine maintenance is included. If you perform work yourself or use an independent repair facility, Honda recommends Genuine Honda Parts and keeping receipts in case they are requested for a warranty concern. The 2021 manual recommends maintaining accurate service records and transferring the documents to the next owner.

A clear record helps you spot upcoming time-based work and show what has already been completed. Keep the owner’s manual with the motorcycle and maintain a separate log or use the manual’s maintenance record. For each entry, note the service date, odometer reading, item inspected or replaced, and who performed the work. Keep receipts and dealer service documents together rather than relying on memory or a single odometer reminder.
- Write down the motorcycle’s year and configuration so you do not accidentally follow a schedule for a different version.
- Enter the date and odometer reading when you take ownership, then record the last known service for each item where documentation exists.
- Use the exact manual’s table to identify the next distance-based tasks, and add calendar reminders for time-based replacements.
- After each service, record what was completed and keep its receipt or service document with the log.
- If service history is missing, ask a Honda dealer to help identify the applicable maintenance schedule and what inspection or service is appropriate before you assume an item is current.
Get the correct manual and service advice
Honda’s official motorcycle owner’s manual finder provides year and model selection. Honda says owners can also purchase owner’s or service manuals through a local authorized dealer or HELM Incorporated. Its U.S. FAQ directs owners to the maintenance section of the owner’s manual and recommends asking a dealer about service needs under particular riding conditions.
When discussing service, provide the dealer with the model year, configuration, current mileage, date and mileage of the last documented maintenance, and the conditions in which you ride. That information helps distinguish a routine scheduled task from a condition-specific recommendation without treating the 2021 example as a universal schedule.
