The 2026 Pilot is still part of the fourth generation, not a fifth-generation model. Each generation brought a major redesign, while updates such as the 2006 front-wheel-drive option, the 2019 technology and styling changes, and the 2022 TrailSport trim occurred within an existing generation.
Honda Pilot generations at a glance
This guide covers the U.S.-market Pilot by model year. A model year is not always the same as the calendar year when the vehicle was announced or sold: the original Pilot went on sale in 2002 as a 2003 model, the second generation was introduced ahead of its 2009 model-year launch, and Honda unveiled the fourth-generation Pilot in late 2022 as a 2023 model.

First-generation Honda Pilot: 2003–2008
The first-generation Pilot established the nameplate’s basic identity: a North American-oriented, three-row crossover SUV built on a unibody platform rather than a traditional body-on-frame truck chassis. Honda announced the production-ready Pilot in March 2002 and said it would go on sale in June as a 2003 model.
Power came from a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 240 horsepower. Buyers could also choose Honda’s VTM-4 four-wheel-drive system. Honda’s launch material emphasized theater-style seating for up to eight people, folding second- and third-row seats, and a large, useful cargo area. Those practical traits became defining Pilot characteristics for the generations that followed.

First-generation year-by-year changes
- 2003–2005: These model years represent the initial first-generation configuration.
- 2006: Front-wheel drive became available, according to model-history references. This means drivetrain cannot be inferred from the body style alone.
- 2007: Stability control became standard, according to model-history references.
- 2008: Final model year for the original Pilot before the second-generation redesign arrived for 2009.
For a used-car shopper, the first generation is the easiest Pilot to identify visually: it has the boxiest proportions and the least modern-looking cabin of the four generations. Equipment can still vary by year, trim, and drivetrain, so a visual match should be treated as a starting point rather than proof of exact specifications.
Second-generation Honda Pilot: 2009–2015
Honda introduced the second-generation Pilot as a 2009 model. It was a complete redesign rather than a minor facelift, with a bolder exterior, a more accommodating interior, and a more conventionally SUV-like appearance.
The second generation retained a 3.5-liter V6 but introduced a newer version of Honda Variable Cylinder Management. Honda described the revised system as capable of operating in six-, four-, and three-cylinder modes, whereas the earlier system used six- and three-cylinder operation. The change was intended to balance the V6’s utility with improved fuel-efficiency behavior under lighter loads.

Compared with the first generation, the 2009–2015 Pilot put more emphasis on interior room, family usability, and SUV presence. It remained a three-row unibody vehicle, but its larger and bolder design made it look more like a conventional SUV than the original Pilot.
Second-generation year-by-year range
There were no new generation boundaries during this run: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 are all second-generation Pilot model years. Trim equipment, drivetrain availability, safety features, and styling details can change from one year to another, but the underlying generation remains the same.
The 2015 Pilot is the final year of this body style. The 2016 model introduced the next major redesign, a new powertrain strategy, and a broader set of technology and safety features.

Third-generation Honda Pilot: 2016–2022
Honda unveiled the all-new 2016 Pilot in February 2015 and described it as the third generation of its three-row midsize SUV. The redesign brought a lighter and more rigid body, revised packaging, new powertrain hardware, additional technology, and expanded safety equipment.

The 2016 model introduced a 3.5-liter Earth Dreams V6. Depending on trim, it was paired with either a six-speed automatic transmission or Honda’s first nine-speed automatic used in a Pilot. Front-wheel drive remained available, while Honda also introduced a newly developed all-wheel-drive system.
Honda expanded the availability of Honda Sensing safety technology during this generation. The result was a Pilot that felt more rounded and family-focused than the blockier second-generation model, with more premium equipment and a greater emphasis on technology.
Important third-generation updates
- 2016: Launch year for the third generation, with the new body, Earth Dreams V6, six- or nine-speed automatic transmission depending on trim, available front-wheel drive, available all-wheel drive, and expanded safety technology.
- 2017–2018: Continued third-generation models with year- and trim-specific equipment changes.
- 2019: Notable mid-cycle technology and exterior-styling update. This was an update within the third generation, not a fourth-generation redesign.
- 2020–2021: Continued third-generation Pilot model years.
- 2022: Final year of the third-generation body style and the first Pilot model year to use the TrailSport name.
The 2022 TrailSport deserves special clarification. It introduced the TrailSport identity to the Pilot, but it should not be treated as equivalent to the more hardware-focused 2023 TrailSport. The fourth-generation TrailSport added more substantial off-road-oriented equipment, including all-terrain tires and additional ground clearance.
Fourth-generation Honda Pilot: 2023–2026
Honda introduced the all-new 2023 Pilot in November 2022. This generation moved the Pilot toward a more upright, squared-off design and a more rugged visual character. It also brought a revised light-truck architecture, a redesigned cabin, and a new powertrain combination.
The fourth-generation Pilot uses a 3.5-liter DOHC V6 producing 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission sends power through the vehicle’s drivetrain. The body is longer and more upright than the third-generation model, and the interior was redesigned around the Pilot’s three-row family-utility mission.

TrailSport becomes more substantial
The 2023 TrailSport was more than a new badge. It brought a more developed off-road package with all-terrain tires, additional ground clearance, and other off-road-oriented hardware. That makes the 2023-and-newer TrailSport meaningfully different from the first TrailSport appearance on the 2022 Pilot, even though both use the same trim name.
Fourth-generation model-year changes
- 2023: Launch year for the fourth generation, with the new body, 285-hp DOHC V6, 10-speed automatic, redesigned interior, and more capable TrailSport.
- 2024: Continued the 2023 design with model-year equipment and pricing changes rather than another generation change.
- 2025: Continued the fourth-generation Pilot lineup, including the Black Edition trim identified in model-history coverage.
- 2026: Current model year in the supplied U.S. model-year coverage. Honda lists Sport, EX-L, TrailSport, Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite, and Black Edition variants, along with the 3.5-liter V6, 285 horsepower, 10-speed automatic, and seating for up to eight.
The 2026 Pilot is not a fifth generation. It remains within the fourth-generation run that began with the 2023 model. A new trim, equipment revision, or appearance package does not by itself create a new generation; the term generally refers to a major redesign of the vehicle’s body, structure, and overall engineering.

How to identify a Honda Pilot generation when shopping used
Generation identification is useful for narrowing down parts, specifications, seating, drivetrain, and technology. It is not enough to identify the exact trim or equipment level.
- Check the model year first. The fastest reliable shortcut is the year shown on the title, registration, vehicle history records, or Honda’s model-year information. Use the four ranges above.
- Compare the exterior shape. A 2003–2008 Pilot has the original boxier design. A 2009–2015 model looks larger and more traditionally SUV-shaped. A 2016–2022 Pilot has smoother, more rounded bodywork. A 2023–2026 Pilot is more upright and squared-off.
- Verify the drivetrain. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive availability can vary by generation, year, and trim. Do not assume that every Pilot of a particular generation has the same drivetrain.
- Check the transmission and engine details. The third generation can have a six-speed or nine-speed automatic depending on trim and year. The fourth generation uses the 285-hp 3.5-liter DOHC V6 with a 10-speed automatic. These details are useful confirmation, but they should still be checked against the vehicle’s documentation.
- Confirm the trim separately. Sport, EX-L, Touring, Elite, TrailSport, Black Edition, and other trim names do not define separate generations. Trim availability changes over time, and a used Pilot may have been modified or badged by a previous owner.
- Verify the VIN before ordering parts. A VIN check is especially important when a seller’s listing, title, or online parts catalog gives conflicting information. Honda’s owners information is organized by model year, which can help confirm manuals and vehicle-specific documentation.
When researching a used Pilot, a vehicle history report can supplement the model-year check by helping you investigate title status, accident history, reported ownership, and other records. It does not replace an inspection or prove that every feature is original.
What the generation differences mean for owners
Choosing a first-generation Pilot
The 2003–2008 Pilot is the original interpretation of Honda’s three-row family SUV. Its key appeal is the straightforward, practical formula: V6 power, available VTM-4 four-wheel drive, three-row seating, and a boxy cargo-friendly shape. Its equipment and safety content should be evaluated by individual model year, particularly when comparing an early example with a 2007 or 2008 vehicle.

- Tips: It is normal for seat covers have creases during transport. Some time after installation, the crease in seat covers will disappear.
Choosing a second-generation Pilot
The 2009–2015 model is the most traditionally SUV-shaped Pilot generation. It offers the larger, bolder design and more accommodating cabin introduced by the redesign. The updated VCM system is a defining technical change, but it does not turn every year and trim into the same vehicle; confirm the exact engine, drivetrain, and equipment configuration.
Choosing a third-generation Pilot
The 2016–2022 generation is the rounded, technology-oriented transition between the older SUV shape and the more rugged fourth-generation design. It is also the generation in which transmission choice varies noticeably by trim, with six-speed and nine-speed automatics both used. The 2019 update and the arrival of TrailSport in 2022 are important distinctions for shoppers comparing listings.
Choosing a fourth-generation Pilot
The 2023–2026 Pilot is the most upright and rugged-looking generation. Its 285-hp DOHC V6, 10-speed automatic, redesigned cabin, and more capable TrailSport distinguish it from the third generation. The 2026 model is a continuation of this design, not a new fifth-generation vehicle.
This generation overview should not be used as a reliability ranking. The supplied model-year history establishes redesign boundaries and equipment changes, but it does not establish that one generation is categorically more reliable, that a particular year should always be avoided, or that a specific VCM or transmission design is defective. Those conclusions require separate recall, service-bulletin, repair-cost, and long-term ownership research.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Accessories and fitment: why the exact year matters
Pilot accessories are not automatically interchangeable across all 24 model years. Before buying anything, match the part to the model year, generation, trim, drivetrain, roof configuration, seating arrangement, and whether the vehicle has factory-installed accessories.
For protecting the cabin, Honda Pilot floor mats are a practical starting point. Honda lists all-season mats as Pilot accessories intended to trap dirt and protect the original carpet from wear. Verify the exact model year, trim, row configuration, and drivetrain before purchasing because a mat set for a 2023–2026 Pilot should not be assumed to fit a 2003–2008, 2009–2015, or 2016–2022 vehicle.
Families who regularly use the third row or carry wet, muddy, or bulky items may also want a Honda Pilot cargo liner or cargo tray. Honda lists a folding cargo tray among its Genuine Accessories. Check whether the vehicle has the standard cargo-floor arrangement, a third-row seat configuration, or another accessory that changes the available cargo-floor shape.
For bikes, skis, kayaks, baskets, or roof boxes, Honda Pilot roof crossbars can provide the mounting base for compatible attachments when the Pilot has the required roof-rail configuration. Crossbar fit varies by model year and roof setup, so confirm the rail type, attachment system, load limits, and installation instructions rather than buying solely from the vehicle name.
Owners performing maintenance or researching generation-specific repairs can use a Honda Pilot repair manual matched to the exact model year. There is no reason to assume that one manual covers every Pilot generation: engines, transmissions, electronics, safety systems, and service procedures change significantly between 2003 and 2026.
For official fitment information, compare the vehicle’s details with Honda Genuine Accessories for Pilot through Honda’s accessory ecosystem or DreamShop. Official accessory listings can help confirm whether a mat, cargo-protection product, roof accessory, or trailer-related item was designed for the specific Pilot configuration, but official product availability should not be confused with a guarantee that an older item remains in stock.

Used-Pilot shopping checklist
- Record the model year and confirm which of the four generations it belongs to.
- Verify the VIN against the title, registration, seller listing, and vehicle documentation.
- Confirm front-wheel drive versus all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
- Check the engine and transmission rather than assuming they match another Pilot from the same generation.
- Identify whether the vehicle is a standard trim or a TrailSport, Elite, Black Edition, or another package.
- For a 2022 TrailSport, remember that it is the first TrailSport model year but not the same hardware package as the 2023-and-newer TrailSport.
- For a 2026 Pilot, do not let the Black Edition or Touring Blackout name suggest a new generation.
- Check the exact fitment before buying floor mats, cargo protection, roof equipment, replacement parts, or service literature.
- Use a vehicle history report as one part of the buying process, then arrange an independent inspection and review maintenance records.
- Do not treat generation membership as a substitute for checking recalls, service records, condition, mileage, accident repairs, and ownership costs on the individual vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Honda Pilot generations are there?
There are four U.S. Honda Pilot generations through the 2026 model year: first generation, 2003–2008; second generation, 2009–2015; third generation, 2016–2022; and fourth generation, 2023–2026.
Is the 2026 Honda Pilot a fifth-generation model?
No. The 2026 Pilot remains part of the fourth generation that began with the all-new 2023 model. Its trim and equipment updates do not create a new generation.
