Honda has been reported to have patented a compact, rideable machine that could serve two purposes: short trips on two wheels and, when connected to an electric vehicle, generating electricity to top up its battery. It is a patent concept—not a Honda product announcement—and its performance, safety, and commercial prospects have not been established.
What the reported Honda patent concept would do
New Atlas’s September 6, 2024 report describes drawings of a small, Motocompo-like ride-on machine with a gasoline engine and generator. In the proposed arrangement, a driver could use it for short-distance travel or connect it to an EV to generate electricity. The article says the drawings show intake and exhaust connections intended to bring in outside air and route exhaust outside the car cabin; that is a description of the drawings, not a validated installation method.
New Atlas also uses a Honda City and a Motocompo-style scooter in its account of the drawings. The original Motocompo was a foldable scooter designed to fit in the trunk of the 1980s Honda City. The reported concept evokes that pairing, but the illustrations do not establish that Honda plans to build it. New Atlas’s report and interpretation of the drawings
Why it is called a range extender
A range extender uses a fuel-powered engine to drive a generator, producing electricity for an EV. That differs from a conventional hybrid setup in which an engine may also drive the wheels. In Honda’s reported concept, the compact ride-on machine would be a separate vehicle and generator that could potentially supply an EV with electricity.

- This generator is used in the electric car driving process in the case of non-stop output DC electric energy to drive the electric car motor work, and control the engine running and off, so that the output voltage is stable in the standard range (using rectifier regulator), the remaining power to the battery to supplement the charge.
- This 3kW gasoline range extender directly provides DC power to your electric vehicle's motor while driving, significantly extending your range. It's the ultimate solution for long journeys or trips to areas without charging stations.
- This system seamlessly works with a wide range of electric vehicles (48V, 60V, and 72V systems). Its built-in intelligent voltage regulator ensures the output voltage remains within a safe standard range, preventing damage to the vehicle's battery pack from overvoltage or high-current charging.
- Easy Installation, Suitable for Multiple Vehicles This on-board charging solution is designed for electric sedans, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and utility vehicles. Large silencer exhaust pipe, low noise.
- Electric Start and Continuous Power Equipped with a convenient, enhanced electric start system, operation is quick and easy. The durable motor with pure copper coil ensures strong rotation of the drum and provides stable power output.
The idea is unusual because one machine is shown serving both personal transport and backup-energy roles. But the available reporting does not establish how it would connect to a car, how much electricity it could supply, or how it would be operated in practice.
What the drawings and reporting do—and do not—establish
- Described: a compact, rideable design with a gasoline engine-generator, depicted alongside a Honda City and styled in a way New Atlas compares with the Motocompo.
- Not established: generator output, charging rate, additional EV miles, fuel consumption, emissions, weight, price, or production cost.
- Not demonstrated: that the arrangement has been tested, is safe or efficient, complies with road or emissions rules, or can be commercially viable.
- Not announced: a production model, release date, or sales plan.
A patent drawing can describe a possible design without showing that it has been built or that its owner intends to sell it. The exact filing behind New Atlas’s illustrations has not been confirmed here, so the concept should not be attributed to a specific patent record or treated as a verified Honda product plan.

How it differs from the Honda Motocompacto
The Motocompacto is a separate, real Honda product: a foldable electric scooter for short first- and last-mile trips. It runs on a battery that must be charged; it is not the gasoline-generator concept described in the patent reporting and does not act as an EV range extender. New Atlas’s September 2024 article listed the Motocompacto at US$995, with a 15 mph (24 km/h) top speed, 12-mile (19 km) range, 3.5-hour charge time, and 41 lb (18.5 kg) weight. Those are specifications reported at that time, not confirmation of current price or availability. New Atlas’s Motocompacto coverage
What the BMW i3 comparison can tell you
New Atlas cites the 2019 BMW i3 as an example of an EV with a range extender, reporting 126 miles (203 km) of battery range and 200 miles (322 km) of total range with the extender. Those figures provide context for the general range-extender idea; they say nothing about the output or expected range of Honda’s proposed machine. No comparable performance figures have been reported for the Honda concept.

A related patent record is not confirmation
A separate record, US12409742B2, titled “Electric vehicle,” appears in a Justia listing dated September 9, 2025. Its description concerns an EV with storage for an engine-equipped saddle-riding vehicle whose generator can be coupled to recharge the EV battery. That resembles the broad idea of carrying a rideable generator, but it has not been confirmed as the filing illustrated in the September 2024 New Atlas article. The two should not be treated as the same invention. Justia’s US12409742B2 record

The reported concept is intriguing as a packaging idea, but the available facts do not answer whether Honda will build it. A patent alone does not establish production intent, specifications, price, or release timing. The exact filing number and legal status behind the drawings also remain unconfirmed in the cited reporting. Until those details and technical evidence are available, it is best understood as a reported design concept rather than an upcoming Honda accessory.
