Honda R&D, Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec have developed underlying technology for wireless EV charging while vehicles are moving. Their system puts transmitting equipment in the road and receiving equipment on an equipped vehicle. The partners have tested it on a private test roadway and plan further tests before a public-road demonstration on Japan’s E14 Tateyama Expressway from Japanese fiscal 2027 onward. This is not a highway charging service available to ordinary drivers.

What is Honda’s wireless EV charging while driving?

It is a form of dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT): road-embedded equipment sends energy to a receiver fitted to a vehicle as it moves. Honda calls the road transmitter a ground assembly (GA) and the vehicle receiver a vehicle assembly (VA). No cable connects the two during power transfer, but both the roadway and participating vehicles need purpose-installed equipment.

The three partners combine Honda’s GA/VA technology and DC distribution, Taisei Corporation’s high-response DC power supply, and Taisei Rotec’s road-embedding construction methods. Their joint work also covers pavement structure, durability, equipment upgrades and testing of DC distribution and wireless power transfer.

How does dynamic wireless power transfer work?

Alternating current in a coil embedded in the roadway creates a changing magnetic field. A coil in the vehicle’s receiver responds to that field and generates electrical current. This magnetic coupling transfers energy across the gap between road and vehicle without a plug or cable.

Honda says its developed GA integrates an inverter and coil into one DWPT unit, with DC distribution between units. The intended installation method involves milling existing pavement and embedding the equipment. The design challenge is to make the system practical to install and maintain while handling large commercial-vehicle loads and transferring power at high vehicle speeds.

Honda cites vehicles with gross weight of approximately 20 tonnes as load context for the pavement challenge. It describes a peak output of up to 150 kW per GA unit as a development capability; the partners say future work will verify performance at outputs up to 150 kW for potential large-commercial-vehicle use. That is a planned test level, not a reported highway result or a measurement of energy delivered to a vehicle in everyday use.

What has been tested, and what comes next?

Work completed on a test roadway

The partners report experiments and validation on a Taisei Group test roadway at T-FIELD/SATTE. Honda says this work verified technologies for the DWPT system, pavement structures and construction methods intended for a public-road demonstration that includes large commercial vehicles. The announcement describes development and test-road work, not a completed public-highway trial or independent certification.

Planned tests at T-FIELD/TAMRA

The next phase is planned to start in late 2026 on another test roadway, T-FIELD/TAMRA. Honda says the planned work includes:

  • A long-term durability loading test equivalent to one million wheel loads, based on 49 kN per wheel.
  • Tests of DWPT performance.
  • Assessment of measures to address electromagnetic-field leakage.
  • Later performance verification at outputs up to 150 kW and reliability checks at high speeds.

These are announced plans, not completed test results. The one-million-wheel-load figure describes the planned durability test; it does not by itself establish a service life for installed road equipment.

When will Japan test wireless charging on a highway?

The partners say they intend to participate in NEXCO East’s Tateyama Project from Japanese fiscal 2027 onward. NEXCO East identifies the planned test area near Kimitsu PA on the E14 Tateyama Expressway, on a section approximately 300 meters long. Its project description lists two teams: Honda R&D with Taisei Corporation, and Toyota Motor Corporation with Denso Corporation and Obayashi Corporation. Demonstrations are planned multiple times from fiscal 2027 onward; the schedule is a plan, not a guaranteed completion date. NEXCO East’s Tateyama Project description says the vehicles and coil equipment are developed and prepared by each team, rather than being off-the-shelf accessories.

Can an EV charge while driving on the Tateyama Expressway?

Not as an ordinary driver today. The Tateyama Expressway work is a planned demonstration using project-specific vehicles and coil equipment, not a public service for compatible consumer EVs. The announcement does not provide a list of compatible vehicles, a consumer price, or a date when drivers could use the technology.

Compared with stationary charging, DWPT’s intended difference is that a vehicle can receive energy without stopping at a charging point. But it requires purpose-installed road infrastructure and vehicle receivers, and its performance depends on the installation, speed and power-transfer conditions. The current announcements do not establish project cost, consumer savings, energy efficiency or lifecycle emissions, so those outcomes cannot yet be compared reliably with conventional charging.

A separate Japanese road experiment reported measurable results

A peer-reviewed paper published in IEEJ Transactions on Industry Applications on April 1, 2026 describes a separate Japanese public-road DWPT prototype project. Its abstract reports approximately 10 kW transferred to an actual automobile and 63.3% of driving energy replenished by that system. It also reports stable parameters for the buried transmission coil after 18 months of testing, with no false detection or power transmission to other general vehicles. These findings belong to that paper’s project, not Honda’s newly announced joint system. Read the IEEJ Transactions on Industry Applications paper via J-STAGE.

What Honda’s announcement establishes—and what it does not

  • Established: Honda R&D, Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec report developing underlying road-embedded DWPT technology and conducting tests on a private test roadway.
  • Planned: Further durability, power-transfer and electromagnetic-field-leakage tests, followed by participation in public-road demonstrations planned from Japanese fiscal 2027 onward.
  • Not established: A completed Honda highway trial, consumer access, vehicle compatibility, commercial availability, charging efficiency, project cost or consumer savings.

Honda presents the technology as a way to supply power while vehicles are moving and says it could reduce how often EVs need charging at home or at charging stations. That is the company’s stated expectation; the announced work has not demonstrated that consumer outcome.
