Honda’s Japan-market update guidance confirms that eligible Honda CONNECT displays communicate with Honda’s data center to receive software updates, but it does not itemize what data an update check or download sends. That means the connection alone does not establish that an update transmits location history, destinations, or driving behavior. “ADUO” is not identified as an official name in the Honda materials covered here.
What does “Honda ADUO” mean?
Honda’s official Japan update and privacy pages reviewed here do not identify “ADUO” as the name of an update system. Honda describes software updates for eligible Honda CONNECT displays instead. If “ADUO” appears on a screen, document, or post you have seen, its meaning cannot be confirmed from those official pages; the vehicle model, market, and exact wording would be needed to identify it.
Does a Honda software update send data to Honda?
For the Japan-market process Honda describes, yes: a vehicle using the telematics control unit (TCU) communicates with Honda’s data center to update software. Honda says a dealer visit is not required for this process. The update instructions establish the communication route, not a complete inventory of the information exchanged.
The reviewed Japan update guidance does not say whether update checks or downloads include a VIN, device identifiers, location, update logs, or other personal or vehicle data. In particular, a TCU connection is not proof that location history, destinations, or driving behavior are included in update traffic. Honda Japan’s general privacy policy says personal-information purposes should be specified and information used within those stated purposes, subject to separately disclosed purposes; it is not a technical data inventory for software updates. What data does Honda collect from a connected car?
The answer depends on the market, vehicle, and connected service. Honda’s regional disclosures provide context, but they should not be treated as interchangeable: a U.S. or Canadian policy does not establish the terms for a Japan-market vehicle.
Japan
Honda Japan’s update pages explain that the car and Honda data center communicate during TCU updates, but do not itemize update-specific data. The company’s general privacy policy describes how it states purposes for personal-information use; it does not fill that technical gap.

American Honda’s System Updates terms say personal data is collected, used, and stored to deliver updates and related services, improve and optimize them, respond to questions and complaints, and maintain internal records. The terms also describe converting personal data into anonymous data for aggregated market research and update analysis, and sharing data with support affiliates or service providers. Canada
Honda Canada’s Vehicle Data Privacy Policy says vehicle data may be used to determine software-update eligibility and provide updates. Its examples of connected-service data include vehicle and device identifiers, account and contact details, and vehicle operation or diagnostic information, depending on the service. It also distinguishes independent third-party services such as Google, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. These statements describe the Canadian policy, not the terms for other markets. Can you update a Honda without visiting a dealer?
Honda says eligible Honda CONNECT display vehicles in Japan can receive the software updates described on its official pages through communication between the car and Honda’s data center, without a dealer visit. Eligibility, update programs, and available routes differ by display and model-year group. Follow the page and notice for the exact vehicle rather than assuming every Honda CONNECT model supports the same method. TCU or Wi-Fi: what changes for the update?
Honda’s Japan instructions describe both TCU and Wi-Fi routes for some updates. The update notice for a specific release determines which route is available; the route describes how the software is delivered, not what personal data is collected.

Honda directs owners to operate the display while parked in a safe place. Some notices offer different methods depending on update content and size, so check the matching Honda page and the notice shown in the vehicle before starting.

Update size and estimated time are release- and configuration-specific, not universal Honda figures. For example, Honda’s May 14, 2026 Accord notices describe a CAN gateway update of about 5 MB with an approximately five-minute TCU example, and a separate eligible map-unit update of about 16 MB with an approximately 48-minute TCU example. Honda’s August 20, 2026 Prelude notice lists a TCU update for eligible 2025.09–2026.07 vehicles, version 8B010-36W-J040, at about 0.6 MB and an approximately 30-minute overall estimate including preparation. These examples apply only to the named releases and configurations; consult Honda’s dated update notices for current eligibility and instructions.

The Prelude notice warns that emergency calling and display audio are unavailable for a short period during installation, and instructs owners to park safely and avoid driving until completion. Other releases may have different effects. Read the exact notice before beginning an installation, and do not assume that the vehicle will remain fully available throughout it.
How to check an update before installing
- Identify the vehicle and market. Confirm the model, model year, display type, and country or region; Honda separates update guidance by vehicle group.
- Open the matching Honda update page. Use Honda’s Honda CONNECT software update page for Japan-market vehicles and find the notice for the exact model and release.
- Check the delivery route and prerequisites. Confirm whether that release allows TCU, Wi-Fi, or both, and review any Wi-Fi network or authentication limitations.
- Review size, duration, and service effects. Treat estimates as applying to the named update, and note any warning about unavailable vehicle functions or services.
- Follow the safety instructions. Operate the display only while parked safely and do not drive during any period the release notice says to avoid driving.
If your concern is specifically what data a Japan-market update sends, the reviewed update guidance does not provide a field-by-field answer. Ask Honda or an authorized dealer about the exact vehicle, service, and release; do not infer that sensitive data categories are transmitted simply because the TCU is used.
