Among the Honda Type R models with comparable official output figures available here, the Civic Type R rose from 185 PS in 1997 to 320 PS in 2017. This is a ranking of those documented Civic versions—not a definitive ranking of every Type R nameplate or market variant. Honda’s figures use PS for the Civic entries and hp for its cited Integra figure, so the units are kept as published rather than treated as interchangeable.

The list below ranks the six Civic Type R versions for which Honda’s cited releases state a peak power figure. Market is included because the releases cover Japanese and European versions as well as later Civic Type R announcements; the figures should not be read as one uniform specification series.

What the output figures say about the Civic sequence
1997: the first Civic Type R in this list
Honda’s 1997 Japanese release describes a 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine producing 185 PS at 8,200 rpm. That places it at the bottom of this ranking by peak output, despite its high stated engine speed for peak power. Honda’s original specifications provide the market-specific figure.
2001 and 2006: closely matched European figures
The 2001 European Civic Type R is rated at 200 PS at 7,400 rpm from a 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine. Honda’s 2006 European release gives the succeeding version 201 PS at 8,000 rpm and explicitly compares it with the preceding version’s 200 PS at 7,400 rpm. The one-PS difference is small; the listed peak-power speed differs by 600 rpm. Honda’s 2001 release and 2006 release document those specifications.

2007: a higher-output Japanese version
Honda lists 225 PS at 8,000 rpm for the 2007 Japanese Civic Type R and describes its engine as naturally aspirated and 2.0 liters. It outranks the European 2006 entry by Honda’s stated PS figures, but the market difference matters: these are not interchangeable trims of one single regional specification. Honda’s 2007 announcement gives the details.
2015 and 2017: the two highest listed figures
The 2015 Civic Type R is rated at 310 PS at 6,500 rpm, with 400 Nm of peak torque at 2,500 rpm. Honda’s 2017 release raises the stated output to 320 PS and again reports 400 Nm of peak torque, alongside a six-speed manual transmission. Why this is not a complete ranking of every Honda Type R
Honda’s Type R history includes more than the Civic. Honda says the NSX Type R launched in 1992, the Integra Type R followed in 1995, and the Civic Type R arrived in 1997. A 2014 Honda release names four Type R derivatives: Civic, Integra, Accord and NSX. The official figures cited here do not provide a complete, market-by-market output table for all of those models, so combining them into a definitive all-Type R ranking would overstate what these sources establish. Integra Type R: a separate figure and unit
In its 2023 anniversary history, Honda says the Integra Type R engine generated 200 hp at 8,000 rpm in the historical context described. That is not added to the PS-ranked Civic table: it is a different nameplate, Honda states the output in hp rather than PS, and the cited retrospective is not a comprehensive specification list for every market variant. NSX-R and the 280-horsepower regulation
Honda’s retrospective says the NSX-R could not increase engine power under the 280-horsepower voluntary regulation and instead improved performance through aerodynamic changes. That explains why power alone does not capture the development of every Type R, but it does not establish a comparable output figure for every NSX-R version. - PS and hp are retained as Honda published them. The Civic entries in the ranked table use PS; Honda’s cited Integra history uses hp. Do not compare those numbers as if the units were identical.
- Market and model year matter. The figures include Japan-specific 1997 and 2007 entries and Europe-specific 2001 and 2006 entries. The 2015 and 2017 releases cited here do not specify a market in the available material.
- A newer model is not always comparable on the evidence shown. Honda’s July 2022 world-premiere release discusses the newest Civic Type R’s dedicated 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo engine and development goals but does not state horsepower in the cited text. It therefore cannot be placed in this numeric ranking. Honda’s 2022 announcement describes the model without supplying the required figure.
- This ranking compares stated peak output, not overall performance. It does not account for weight, gearing, torque delivery, chassis setup or testing results.
A complete all-Type R horsepower ranking would require official specifications matched by country, model year and variant—including the relevant Accord and NSX-R versions—and a consistent approach to output units. The documented Civic figures above support a useful historical sequence, but not a universal leaderboard.
