Model-year labels alone cannot tell you whether a particular Civic is a good buy: body style, trim, engine, transmission, market, maintenance, and repairs all matter.
Start by confirming which Civic you are considering
“FG/FB” is a North American generation reference, not a guarantee that every Civic from these years has the same equipment or mechanical configuration. Confirm the car’s year, body style, trim, engine, transmission, and market from its VIN and vehicle documentation. When details matter, check the original owner’s manual for that configuration.
There are meaningful year differences. CarScout’s buyer guide describes 2012 as the launch year and 2013 as a refresh; its summary notes revised styling and suspension, a stiffer body, an upgraded interior, and a standard rearview camera for 2013. For 2014, non-Si 1.8-liter automatic models moved to a CVT, so do not assume every automatic from 2012 through 2015 behaves the same. Verify the specific car rather than relying on a year-level description. Check recalls by VIN—not just by model year
Run the vehicle identification number through NHTSA’s recall lookup or ask a Honda dealer to check it. Request documentation showing that applicable recall repairs were completed; a seller’s verbal assurance is not the same as a repair record. A campaign that affected some vehicles in a model year does not prove that this Civic was included, or that its repair remains open.

CarScout’s 2026 guide, which attributes its year-level figures to NHTSA, reports 3 recalls for 2012, 0 for 2013, 2 for 2014, and 1 for 2015. It names campaigns involving the 2012 driveshaft, fuel-line O-ring and steering column, a CVT software campaign for 2014–2015, and a tire campaign. The guide reports 50,190 units for the 2012 driveshaft campaign and 143,676 Civic and Fit units combined for the CVT pulley-shaft software campaign. Those are campaign figures—not failure rates, counts of cars still needing repair, or proof that a particular vehicle is affected. Read the service history alongside the Maintenance Minder
Ask for service receipts, dates and mileage for routine work, records of repairs, and an explanation of any gaps. Honda Canada says Maintenance Minder applies to 2006–2015 Civics and estimates oil life and recommends oil-and-filter changes and other services. It is useful context, but it is not a complete condition report: it does not monitor engine oil level or wear items such as tires, brakes, and the battery. Honda’s guidance says, “The system doesn’t have sensors to monitor oil level, but it is critical to your engine’s life, so be sure to check your oil level regularly – see owner’s manual for details.” Honda also says the system is not a health check and advises having leaks, unresolved warning lights, and unusual noises diagnosed. Compare the records with the owner’s manual and the car’s actual condition. A displayed maintenance reminder or a seller’s claim that the car was serviced regularly does not replace dated documentation or an inspection.
Inspect the car cold, then road-test it
Whenever possible, arrange to see the Civic before it has been warmed up. A cold start and a deliberate test drive can reveal concerns a quick look at a parked car will not. These checks are screening steps, not a substitute for diagnosis by a qualified mechanic.

Before starting
- Look for visible fluid leaks, damage, or signs of poorly documented repairs.
- Check tire condition and wear, and look over the brakes as far as you reasonably can.
- Test the electrical equipment and controls, including lights, windows, locks, and climate controls.
- Ask about warning lights, noises, repairs, and any known problems; compare the answers with the records.
At startup and during the drive
- Watch the dashboard through its normal startup sequence and note any warning light that stays on or appears while driving.
- Listen for unusual noises at startup, idle, and during acceleration.
- During the road test, pay attention to starting, acceleration, braking, steering, and transmission behavior.
- For a 2014–2015 CVT-equipped car, assess the transmission in the actual vehicle; do not treat it as interchangeable with the conventional automatic used in 2012–2013 configurations.
Use a scan as one diagnostic input
An OBD-II scanner can retrieve diagnostic trouble codes and help identify an issue that needs further investigation. Haynes describes using a fault-code reader when diagnosing a cooling-system warning, but a scan cannot certify a Civic as fault-free or replace an inspection. Treat reported problems as things to investigate, not predictions
Haynes’ October 2022 guide discusses selected recall campaigns and reported concerns, including a steering-column bracket, a driver-side driveshaft retaining clip, a fuel-line O-ring, a CVT input-shaft pulley software campaign, and possible tire damage. It also describes CV-joint clicking or grinding while accelerating and turning, cooling-system warning diagnosis, and a keyless-start shutdown concern. When to get an independent pre-purchase inspection
Have an independent mechanic inspect a Civic you are seriously considering, particularly if service records are incomplete, a warning light is present, the road test raises a concern, or you cannot confidently assess its condition yourself. Share the VIN, service history, and any scan results, and ask the mechanic to investigate the symptoms rather than treating a code reader as the diagnosis. If the seller will not allow a reasonable inspection, factor that uncertainty into your decision.
Compare the actual cars, not “best” and “worst” year labels
The available year-level guidance does not establish one universally best 9th-generation Civic year or a model-wide reliability ranking. Instead, compare candidates on the evidence you can verify:

- VIN-confirmed recall status and documentation of completed applicable repairs.
- Continuity and quality of service records, considered alongside current condition.
- Mechanical, body, interior, tire, and brake condition based on inspection and road test.
- Whether the specific trim, equipment, engine, and transmission suit your needs.
- Mileage in context: how the car was used, what work is documented, and what it needs now.
- Price relative to verified repairs or maintenance needed—not just the model year.
CarScout’s labels about better-value years are editorial judgments, not a universal verdict. The more useful choice is the individual car with the clearest history and condition, the configuration you want, and costs you can assess before purchase.
