Honda City vs Hyundai Verna: Which Sedan Is Better for Your Budget?

The Verna has the stronger top-trim value case on paper, while the Honda City is the hybrid choice. Compare dated prices, powertrains, space and safety before asking for local on-road quotes.

For a similarly priced, fully equipped automatic, the Hyundai Verna has the stronger value case on paper; choose the Honda City if you specifically want its strong-hybrid powertrain. Autocar India’s May 26, 2026 comparison put the City ZX+ CVT and Verna HX10 CVT at the same ex-showroom price, ₹17.15 lakh, and favored the Verna in that particular comparison. That is not a universal winner: your city, exact variant, gearbox, dealer quote and priorities can change which car fits your budget.

What does the budget comparison actually show?

There are two different questions hidden in “which is better for your budget?” One is which model starts at a lower price; the other is what you get for the money in a specific, comparable configuration. The first can help narrow a shortlist, but it cannot settle the second.

CarDekho’s June 22, 2026 comparison gave broad ex-showroom ranges of ₹12 lakh–₹21 lakh for the 2026 Honda City facelift and ₹10.98 lakh–₹18.40 lakh for the Hyundai Verna. Those ranges are not a comparison of equivalent trims, engines or transmissions. The Verna’s lower starting figure does not establish that a Verna with the safety equipment and features you want will cost less than a similarly equipped City.

Configuration Reported price What the comparison establishes
Honda City ZX+ manual ₹16.15 lakh Autocar reported it at ₹1 lakh below the Verna HX10 CVT.
Honda City ZX+ CVT ₹17.15 lakh Same reported ex-showroom price as the Verna HX10 CVT.
Hyundai Verna HX10 CVT ₹17.15 lakh Same reported ex-showroom price as the City ZX+ CVT.
Hyundai Verna HX10 range ₹17.15 lakh–₹18.25 lakh Autocar reported the turbo DCT at a ₹1.1 lakh premium over the petrol CVT.

These are dated, trim-specific figures, not guaranteed current offers or on-road totals. Taxes and other charges, insurance treatment, accessories, local offers and registration costs affect the amount due in a particular location. Hyundai’s current Verna price page presents a location-and-configuration selection workflow and warns that prices and variants can change, so use it to check the configuration available to you, then get dealer quotations.

How to compare quotes without a misleading price gap

  1. Choose the same city and quote date. Ask each dealer for the on-road price for that location. Ex-showroom figures alone do not compare the full amount you will pay.
  2. Match the configuration. Name the exact trim, engine and transmission in both requests. A manual City and an automatic Verna are not like-for-like alternatives simply because their prices are close.
  3. Make the inclusions visible. Ask for insurance, registration-related charges, accessories and any discount or offer to be shown separately. Compare the same insurance treatment and the same set of included items.
  4. Check the equipment you require. Match your must-have safety and convenience features against the exact trim, rather than assuming a feature on a top model is standard across the range.
  5. Compare total ownership assumptions separately. If you are weighing finance, insurance, fuel and other costs, use your own annual distance, route pattern, local fuel price and terms. The available comparisons do not establish a single total-cost-of-ownership winner.

Hyundai’s price page identifies the Verna variant families as HX 2, HX 4, HX 6, HX 6+, HX 8 and HX 10, alongside 1.5-litre MPi and 1.5-litre Turbo GDi engines. The page’s location and configuration selectors matter: the price attached to a variant name can change, and the same engine or feature should not be assumed across every trim. When you ask for a quote, have the dealer write down the full variant name and engine, not just “Verna automatic” or “City top model.”

For the City, the important budget split is whether you are considering the regular petrol car or the e:HEV strong hybrid. A comparison of the City’s broad range with the Verna’s range can obscure the hybrid’s distinct powertrain and its boot-capacity difference. Write down the exact car you would buy first; then compare its equipment and price with the closest configuration that meets your needs in the other range.

Which engines and transmissions suit your driving?

The City and Verna use different strategies. The City offers a naturally aspirated petrol engine and a petrol-electric strong hybrid. The Verna offers naturally aspirated petrol and turbo-petrol engines. Your preference between hybrid operation, straightforward petrol choices and turbo performance is more useful than treating one headline power figure as a complete verdict.

Model and powertrain Power Torque Transmission information
Honda City 1.5-litre petrol 121 hp 145 Nm 6-speed manual or CVT.
Honda City 1.5-litre strong hybrid 126 hp 253 Nm e-CVT.
Hyundai Verna 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol 115 hp 144 Nm Manual and automatic options are available in the range; verify the gearbox on the exact trim.
Hyundai Verna 1.5-litre turbo-petrol 160 hp 253 Nm The turbo pairing offers stronger performance; verify transmission availability for the selected variant.

The figures are from Autocar India’s May 2026 top-trim specification comparison. They describe listed engine outputs, not independent acceleration tests or a guarantee of how either car will feel in every driving condition. The Verna turbo is the highest-output option in this comparison. The City hybrid is the City’s distinctive alternative if a strong-hybrid powertrain is a priority.

Think about the kind of driving you do before paying for a powertrain. If your shortlist is between a regular petrol and the City hybrid, compare their exact prices and use pattern rather than assuming that the higher claimed efficiency alone decides the value question. If you want the Verna turbo, compare its DCT configuration with the petrol CVT on a separate line: Autocar’s May 2026 figures put the turbo DCT ₹1.1 lakh above the petrol CVT in the HX10 range. That dated premium is a useful reference point, not a substitute for a current quote.

What the City’s claimed fuel economy can—and cannot—tell you

Honda Cars India lists claimed fuel efficiency of 17.77 km/l for the City petrol manual, 17.97 km/l for the petrol CVT and 27.26 km/l for the e:HEV. These are manufacturer figures published on Honda’s specifications page, accessed October 10, 2026; they are not a like-for-like independent real-world test against the Verna.

Do not convert the hybrid’s claim directly into a promised rupee saving. A useful estimate needs your expected annual kilometres, local petrol price, route mix and a comparable real-world consumption basis for the two specific versions you are considering. The source comparisons provide no independent, current real-world fuel-economy test for both cars and no comparative total-cost-of-ownership calculation.

If you want to make your own estimate, first choose a realistic distance and the same fuel-price assumption for both cars. For each version, estimate litres used as annual kilometres divided by the consumption figure you believe is appropriate, then multiply by your local price per litre. Use the same kind of consumption evidence for both cars; comparing Honda’s manufacturer claim with an anecdotal figure for the Verna would not make a fair calculation. If you do not have comparable real-world figures, treat the result as a scenario rather than a forecast, and keep purchase price, financing, insurance and other ownership assumptions separate.

Decide whether a transmission is a must-have

The petrol City gives buyers a 6-speed manual or CVT, while its hybrid uses an e-CVT. The Verna range includes manual and automatic options, and the turbo pairing is positioned for stronger performance. Gearbox availability varies by variant: do not assume that every engine and transmission can be ordered in every trim. Ask the dealer to confirm the exact combination and include it in the written quote.

A transmission preference can change which price comparison is relevant. The reported City ZX+ manual price of ₹16.15 lakh is not directly comparable with the Verna HX10 CVT at ₹17.15 lakh if you need an automatic. Conversely, a buyer who wants a manual should compare available manual trims rather than using the equal-price CVT comparison as the deciding evidence. A written quote should identify both gearbox and engine so that any difference is visible.

Which car gives you more room and useful equipment?

Autocar India’s May 2026 comparison lists the Verna as slightly shorter but wider and longer between the axles. The City is taller in the listed dimensions. Boot capacity differs by City powertrain, making it especially important to compare the version you would actually buy.

Measurement Honda City Hyundai Verna
Length 4,594 mm 4,585 mm
Width 1,748 mm 1,765 mm
Height 1,489 mm 1,475 mm
Wheelbase 2,600 mm 2,670 mm
Boot capacity 506 litres for petrol; 306 litres for hybrid 528 litres

The Verna’s listed wheelbase is longer, and its 528-litre boot exceeds the petrol City’s 506 litres and the hybrid City’s 306 litres. The measurements help identify likely differences for passengers and luggage, but they cannot tell you whether a particular rear-seat passenger fits comfortably or whether your bags load easily. Sit in both cars with the people who will travel in them, and take the luggage you regularly carry to a test drive.

This is a particularly practical check if you are considering the City e:HEV: its listed boot is 200 litres smaller than the petrol City’s and 222 litres smaller than the Verna’s. Those are specification differences, not a judgment about whether the hybrid will work for your household. Try your usual suitcases, stroller or other regular cargo in the actual car, and check access as well as volume. Likewise, the Verna’s 70 mm longer listed wheelbase is a reason to test the rear seat, not proof that every passenger will find it more comfortable.

Top-trim features that affect the value calculation

In Autocar’s compared top trims, both cars are listed with ventilated front seats, a sunroof, wireless charging, rear vents and eight-speaker audio systems. The remaining listed equipment differs:

  • Verna HX10: fully digital 10.25-inch driver display, 10.25-inch infotainment screen, powered driver’s seat with memory, rear sunshades, cooled glove box and Bose sound system.
  • City ZX+: 7-inch MID, 10.1-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and PM2.5 cabin filter.

These are top-trim comparison details, not a promise that equipment carries over to lower-priced variants. Decide which items you will actually use, then confirm them on the exact trim and model year in your quote. A long feature list is only a budget advantage if it includes things you value enough to pay for.

  • ✅【360° FREE ROTATION】 - With an adjustable swivel ball joint, you can rotate your smartphone or device at your own will, providing the best viewing angle. Quickly pick and place with one hand, free your hands and make calls and GPS navigation more convenient

Use a short personal checklist rather than counting every feature as equal. For example, someone who regularly drives with rear passengers may value rear sunshades and rear vents more than a larger display; someone who prioritises smartphone use may want to confirm the City’s listed wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the exact version. The compared list shows the equipment on these top trims only, so verify a feature before treating it as part of a cheaper variant’s value.

How do the compared trims differ on safety equipment?

Autocar’s May 2026 top-trim comparison lists six airbags for the City and seven for the Verna. Both are listed with a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS. The Verna is listed with front and rear parking sensors; the City is listed with rear sensors. For braking hardware, the comparison lists front and rear disc brakes on the Verna and City hybrid, while petrol City variants are listed with front discs only.

The comparison also lists both cars with a tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), electronic stability control, traction control, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming IRVM. Hyundai Motor India’s March 9, 2026 launch release separately says the updated Verna includes Hyundai SmartSense Level 2 ADAS, seven airbags, a dashcam and a surround-view monitor. That is Hyundai’s manufacturer description of the launch model, not independent safety testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a purchase decision, confirm the feature list for the exact trim and model year rather than relying on a range-wide summary. In particular, check which driver-assistance features are included, which sensors and cameras are fitted, and whether the equipment differs between engine or transmission variants. Feature counts do not substitute for a crash-test result, and the comparisons cited here do not provide one.

Make a safety checklist before visiting a dealer. Ask which airbags are fitted to the exact trim, whether the front sensors and surround-view equipment mentioned for the Verna are included in the quoted configuration, and which cameras or sensors are present on the City. If you are choosing the petrol City rather than the hybrid, confirm the braking specification for that version too. This keeps a top-trim equipment comparison from becoming an assumption about the variant you can afford.

Which one should you choose for your budget?

Use your budget ceiling to decide which comparison matters. A low entry price, a matched automatic top trim and a hybrid-versus-turbo decision are different buying cases; they should not be collapsed into one model-wide winner.

If your priority is the lowest starting price

The broad June 2026 ex-showroom comparison starts the Verna lower than the City. Treat that as a shortlist clue, not proof that the Verna is the cheapest car for your needs. Identify the lowest variants that still meet your safety, transmission and convenience requirements, then compare actual on-road quotations for the same city. Trim content and local offers can change the result.

In practical terms, set a maximum on-road amount, then list the features you will not compromise on. Ask each dealer to quote the least expensive exact configuration that meets that list. If a lower-priced trim lacks a must-have transmission or safety feature, it is not a valid budget alternative even if its headline price is attractive. If a dealer proposes accessories or insurance you do not want, ask for the line items to be separated so you can compare like with like.

If you want the strong hybrid

The City is the choice between these two for a petrol-electric strong-hybrid powertrain. Its e:HEV has a 306-litre boot in Autocar’s comparison, compared with 506 litres for the petrol City and 528 litres for the Verna. The manufacturer’s claimed 27.26 km/l figure is relevant to your estimate, but it does not establish how much you will save. Consider the purchase-price difference, the annual distance you expect to cover and the journeys you make before deciding whether the hybrid’s claimed efficiency matters enough to justify its configuration.

Ask for the current e:HEV price and compare it with the petrol City and the Verna configuration you would otherwise buy. Then test whether the boot trade-off is workable. The available figures do not determine a payback period or establish the hybrid as cheaper to own; the answer depends on your annual use, fuel assumptions, finance and local price.

If turbo performance and top-trim equipment matter most

The Verna has the stronger paper case: the turbo is listed at 160 hp, and the compared HX10 equipment includes seven airbags, front parking sensors and several cabin features not listed for the compared City trim. If you are considering the turbo DCT rather than the petrol CVT, include the reported ₹1.1 lakh premium in your dated-price comparison and confirm today’s local quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are comparing the top-trim CVTs

Autocar’s May 2026 figures put both the City ZX+ CVT and Verna HX10 CVT at ₹17.15 lakh ex-showroom. Autocar favored the Verna on value in that specific comparison, given its listed equipment and other paper advantages. Recheck current prices and on-road totals before applying that verdict to a purchase: a dealer’s quote, insurance, accessories or a different required feature can alter the arithmetic.

If luggage space or rear-seat use is decisive

The Verna’s listed 528-litre boot is the largest of these compared versions, while the City hybrid’s listed 306 litres is substantially smaller than the petrol City’s. Its longer listed wheelbase may also make the Verna worth a closer rear-seat check, but dimensions alone do not establish comfort for your family. Bring passengers and luggage to the test drive rather than choosing by specification sheet alone.

If you are asking “Honda City V MT vs Hyundai Verna HX6—which would you choose?”

That is a useful reminder to compare named variants rather than model names alone. The available top-trim price and feature comparison does not settle a City V MT versus Verna HX6 decision: the City V MT is not the ZX+ manual, and HX6 is not the HX10. Get current quotes for those exact trims, confirm their engines and equipment, and compare the features you actually need. Do not apply the top-trim CVT verdict to a lower-trim manual comparison.

What to verify before paying a booking amount

  • Get written on-road quotations for both cars in the same city, on the same date, with the same insurance and accessory assumptions.
  • Confirm the exact model year, trim, engine and gearbox in the quote. The City ZX+ CVT and Verna HX10 CVT price comparison is specific to the configurations Autocar reported in May 2026.
  • Check the exact safety and convenience equipment on the car being quoted, especially airbags, parking sensors, cameras, ADAS, braking hardware and any feature that is a deciding factor for you.
  • Test the seating position, rear-seat fit and luggage capacity with your own passengers and bags. The City hybrid’s boot is not the same size as the petrol City’s.
  • For fuel-cost estimates, use a realistic annual distance, local fuel price and route mix. Do not treat Honda’s claimed figures as equivalent to independent real-world results for both cars.
  • If financing or long-term ownership cost drives the decision, compare the actual repayment and ownership assumptions you are offered. The cited comparisons do not determine which car will cost a particular buyer less over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is cheaper, the Honda City or Hyundai Verna?

CarDekho’s June 2026 broad ex-showroom ranges start lower for the Verna: ₹10.98 lakh–₹18.40 lakh versus ₹12 lakh–₹21 lakh for the City facelift. These are not matched trims or on-road prices. Are the Honda City ZX+ CVT and Hyundai Verna HX10 CVT the same price?

Autocar India reported both at ₹17.15 lakh ex-showroom in May 2026. That is a dated top-trim comparison; current dealer prices, insurance, registration costs, accessories and offers can change the amount you pay.

Does the Honda City hybrid guarantee lower fuel costs than the Verna?

No. Honda Cars India lists 27.26 km/l as the City e:HEV’s claimed figure, but the cited comparisons do not provide a like-for-like independent real-world fuel-economy test for both cars. Estimate costs using your annual distance, local petrol price, route mix and comparable consumption assumptions.

Which car has the bigger boot?

Autocar India’s May 2026 comparison lists 528 litres for the Verna, 506 litres for the petrol City and 306 litres for the City hybrid. If luggage space matters, test the exact version with the bags you normally carry.

Which has more airbags and parking sensors in the compared top trims?

Autocar’s May 2026 comparison lists seven airbags and front and rear parking sensors for the Verna HX10, and six airbags and rear sensors for the City ZX+. Confirm exact equipment on the variant and model year you are buying.

Which car is better value: City or Verna?

For the matched top-trim CVTs priced equally at ₹17.15 lakh ex-showroom in Autocar India’s May 2026 comparison, the Verna had the stronger equipment and value case on paper. The City is the choice between these two if you specifically want a strong hybrid. The best fit for a different trim or local quote may differ.

Can I use the top-trim comparison to choose between a City V MT and Verna HX6?

Not directly. The top-trim comparison covers City ZX+ and Verna HX10, not those lower variants. Compare current quotes and the exact engine, transmission, safety equipment and features for the V MT and HX6.

Which one will cost less to own over time?

The cited comparisons do not establish a comparative total cost of ownership. Your answer depends on the actual purchase price, financing, insurance, fuel use, annual distance and other ownership assumptions. Compare written costs using your own circumstances rather than treating a claimed efficiency figure as a guaranteed saving.

The Bottom Line

For the compared top-trim CVTs, the Verna is the stronger value on paper at the same reported ₹17.15 lakh ex-showroom price; for a strong-hybrid powertrain, the City is the choice between these two. Check current local on-road quotes, confirm the exact trim’s equipment and test the rear seat and boot with your passengers and luggage before booking.
