A home-built water-injection system is not just a tank, pump and nozzle: it also needs fluid-compatible hardware, a suitable controller, and a strategy that works with the specific engine and fuel system. Because this title does not specify a vehicle or controller, there is no safe universal parts list, nozzle size, wiring diagram, or tuning recipe. Treat a parts list as a starting point—not proof that a system is compatible or validated.
What a water-injection system includes
Water injection and water/methanol injection describe related but not identical setups. A system combines a fluid reservoir and delivery hardware with metering and a control strategy. The controller determines when and how fluid is delivered; the engine’s fuel system and calibration also matter. A collection of components that physically fit together does not establish that the combination is suitable for a particular engine.
One documented example shows why the distinction matters: Holley calls its 557-101 an installation kit, not a stand-alone system. It is designed for Holley HP and Dominator EFI systems, and the instructions specify additional pump and solenoid/nozzle components. Holley’s product page describes included hardware such as a reservoir, low-level float, tubing, filter, fittings, relay, wiring, fuse and warning LED. Those inclusions do not make the kit universal or complete for every vehicle.
Choose the control system before the hardware
Control compatibility is a core design decision, not a detail to solve after installation. For Holley’s 557-101, the instructions specify Holley HP or Dominator EFI and ECU injector-driver control for its solenoids; the kit is not a stand-alone controller. Other systems may use a separate controller. For example, Bosphorus Innovations describes a standalone-ECU kit with configurable TPS, MAP or engine-load inputs and single-stage, dual-stage or progressive operation. These are descriptions of different product approaches, not evidence that either is compatible with an unspecified DIY build.

Before selecting parts, identify the exact engine-management system and confirm the intended controller supports the vehicle and the chosen delivery hardware. Do not assume that a generic pump, nozzle and controller form a matched system. Nor do vendor flow choices or mixture recommendations establish a validated nozzle size or tune for a different engine.
Check fluid and material compatibility
Fluid limits must be tied to the specific product. Holley’s instructions state that its system is designed for 100% water or mixtures up to 50% methanol, and warn not to exceed 50% methanol. They also require compatible materials for hardware used with the system. That is a product-specific limit, not a universal recipe for home-built injection. Confirm compatibility for every fluid-contact component—including reservoir, pump, seals, hoses, fittings and nozzle—using the manufacturers’ documentation.

Methanol adds a handling hazard. In its July 19, 2016 manual, Banks describes pure methanol as flammable and volatile and advises avoiding direct contact with pure or diluted methanol. Its statement that dilution makes the mixture safer is comparative, not a claim that diluted fluid is harmless. Use the relevant product safety information and take precautions appropriate to the fluid.
Installation involves vehicle and electrical hazards
Use the complete instructions for the vehicle and each component. Banks’ universal-system manual, dated July 19, 2016, gives installation guidance including disconnecting the battery ground before work and routing wiring and hoses at least six inches from exhaust heat, moving parts and sharp edges, with eight inches or more recommended where possible. These are Banks’ instructions, not a substitute for current vehicle-specific service guidance.

- Support the vehicle with appropriately rated stands, ramps or a commercial hoist; Banks says not to rely on a floor jack alone.
- Keep components clean during installation and follow the relevant instructions for electrical connections and fluid handling.
- Confirm the engine fuel system can deliver fuel to factory specification. Water or methanol injection does not replace that requirement.
- Do not proceed with an improvised wiring or hose route that exposes components to heat, movement or abrasion.
Read the Banks installation manual and related instructions alongside the current service information for the vehicle. The manual’s date matters: its guidance is useful context, not a guarantee that it covers later vehicle designs or every installation.
What to establish before building
- Identify the application: Record the exact vehicle, engine, EFI system, fuel and intended use. Without those details, component sizing and calibration cannot be responsibly specified.
- Verify controller and component compatibility: Check the controller’s documentation, how it commands the pump or solenoids, and which additional parts the system requires.
- Confirm fluid limits: Use only fluids and mixtures allowed by the documentation for the complete set of wetted components. Do not transfer one manufacturer’s mix limit to another setup.
- Review safeguards: Determine what monitoring and low-fluid warnings are included, and what the system does if fluid delivery is interrupted. Do not assume a warning light or a particular failsafe is present unless the product documentation says so.
- Plan installation and calibration: Use current vehicle-specific service guidance and qualified tuning support where needed. The sources cited here do not establish a safe tune, nozzle size or wiring plan for an unspecified home build.

| Approach | What is established | What remains vehicle-specific |
|---|---|---|
| Assembling parts yourself | A parts list alone does not validate controller compatibility, fluid compatibility or calibration. | Component selection, installation, safeguards and tuning. |
| Holley 557-101 installation kit | Holley specifies HP or Dominator EFI use, says it is not stand-alone, and lists additional pump and solenoid/nozzle parts in its instructions. The product page lists included reservoir, float, tubing, filter, fittings, relay, wiring, fuse and warning LED. | Fitment and calibration for a particular vehicle; the required additional parts must be identified. |
| Shop installation and tuning | Holley’s product page directs customers to dealers for custom kits, installation and tuning; Banks provides technical support information in its manual. | Local availability, qualifications, suitability and total cost. |
The cited sources do not provide a controlled comparison of these approaches or independently measured results for a home-built system. Vendor descriptions of benefits are not proof that a DIY setup will produce a particular power, temperature, fuel-economy, emissions or reliability outcome.

Without a specified vehicle, controller and intended use, a universal build recipe would be misleading. The cited product instructions and manuals do not establish legality or emissions status for a particular location, a nozzle size, or a calibration for an unspecified application. Those questions require the exact vehicle and current primary guidance. No measured results are established here for the title’s unspecified home-built setup.
