The technological feasibility trial at First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi mine in Zambia is reported complete: by August 2025, it had covered more than 4,000 km of haul road and transported over 30,000 tonnes. Hitachi is targeting commercial deployment in FY2027, which ends in March 2028; that is a target, not a confirmed launch date.
How the dump truck charges while moving
The truck combines an onboard battery with overhead electric trolley lines. When connected to the lines, it draws electrical power while moving; when it slows or descends, regenerative braking recovers energy. This is dynamic charging through mine infrastructure, not wireless charging and not a system that works on ordinary roads without trolley lines.
Hitachi says drawing power from the lines can reduce the amount of onboard battery needed, helping limit vehicle weight and preserve payload. It also says charging in motion can avoid separate recharge stops and support a higher operating rate than static charging. These are the manufacturer’s stated design benefits; published sources do not provide independent measurements of productivity, operating cost, or emissions savings.
Where it was tested and what the trial established
Hitachi Construction Machinery and ABB began developing the full-battery dump truck in 2021, with ABB developing the battery system. First Quantum Minerals hosted the technological feasibility trial at its Kansanshi copper-gold mine in Zambia. First Quantum had signed a zero-emission partnership letter of intent with Hitachi in March 2023.

Hitachi’s June 2024 announcement described testing basic operation under actual loads, including travel, turning and stopping, along with battery charging and discharging cycles. The mine’s existing overhead dynamic-charging infrastructure and multiple haul circuits made it a place to evaluate the truck in an operating mine environment.
International Mining reported in April 2026 that the feasibility trial ran from June 2024 to August 2025, covering over 4,000 km of haul road and moving more than 30,000 tonnes. These are reported trial totals, not a published measure of commercial fleet output.

What “world first” means here
Hitachi’s June 2024 “world’s first” claim was narrowly defined: an OEM-produced, ultra-large, full-battery rigid-frame dump truck in a category of trucks with at least 150 tonnes of load capacity. The 150-tonne threshold defines the comparison category; it is not confirmation of this prototype’s payload.
New Atlas described the trial vehicle as based on Hitachi’s EH4000 AC-3 platform. That identification does not establish the battery prototype’s specifications, and the diesel EH4000AC-3’s published figures should not be treated as specifications for this full-battery machine.

Is the Hitachi battery mining truck commercially available?
The available reporting describes a feasibility trial, not a truck already in routine commercial service. International Mining reported Hitachi’s target of commercial deployment in FY2027, the fiscal year ending March 2028. A target can change and is not a confirmed availability date.
For now, the approach is suited to mines able to install and operate trolley infrastructure on their haul roads. Its practical fit depends on site layout and operating plans, including where lines can be installed and how the truck’s battery and trolley supply are coordinated.

What performance details have not been published?
The cited announcements and coverage do not state the battery capacity, standalone range, time for a full charge, independently measured emissions reduction, or a verified cost-per-tonne comparison. The trial distance and tonnage show that the truck was operated at Kansanshi, but do not answer those specification or comparative-performance questions.
Hitachi’s 2024 release called the truck zero-emission. The prototype is described as full-battery and without a diesel engine, but the sources do not provide a lifecycle emissions assessment for either the vehicle or the electricity used to charge it. Hitachi’s release also cited 92% renewable energy for Zambia, sourcing the figure to IRENA; that is a figure cited by Hitachi in 2024, not a current independent measurement of the mine’s electricity supply.
