SRT’s history runs from a Viper-powered supercar and a turbocharged compact to HEMI muscle cars, a V10 pickup and a 710-horsepower three-row SUV. The eleven vehicles in this representative history show how Chrysler’s internal Street and Racing Technology group evolved into a cross-brand performance designation, briefly became its own brand, and ultimately returned to Dodge while remaining active on the Durango in the U.S. 2026 lineup.

What SRT means—and what it became

SRT is commonly expanded as Street and Racing Technology. It began as an internal Chrysler performance-engineering organization, became a recognizable designation applied to Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram products, and briefly operated as a standalone Chrysler Group performance brand. It was later consolidated back into Dodge, where SRT continued as a high-performance designation rather than disappearing entirely.

The eleven vehicles below are representative milestones, not every SRT-edition vehicle ever sold. Together, they show the full arc: the Viper supplied the halo-car credibility, the Neon proved that SRT could build an accessible turbocharged compact, the 6.1- and 6.4-liter HEMI programs made the formula scalable, and the Hellcat era pushed SRT power into sedans and three-row SUVs.

One distinction matters from the beginning: the Viper program predates the formal SRT badge. The 2003 Viper SRT-10 is therefore best understood as the badge-era expression of an older performance program, not as the moment the Viper itself was invented.

1. Dodge Viper SRT-10: the halo that made SRT credible

Model years: 2003–2010.

The Viper SRT-10 was SRT’s foundational supercar assignment. The redesigned car received an 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V10 producing 500 horsepower and 525 lb-ft of torque. SRT engineers also worked on chassis rigidity and weight reduction, demonstrating that the mission involved more than fitting a large engine and adding an aggressive body kit.

The Viper gave the developing SRT organization a critical form of credibility. A low-volume flagship allowed engineers to work at the edge of Chrysler’s capabilities, and the results could then inform less exotic vehicles. The Viper’s engine, chassis character and uncompromising layout made it clear that SRT was capable of re-engineering a vehicle rather than simply creating an appearance package.

It is also important not to confuse the origins of the Viper with the origins of the SRT badge. The Viper concept and program reach back to the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Viper SRT-10 was the formal SRT-era continuation of that lineage. When SRT briefly operated as a separate brand, the Viper returned for the 2013 and 2014 model years as the SRT Viper. That later car continued the Viper story; it was not a separate origin point for SRT.

2. Dodge Neon SRT-4: proving SRT could be accessible

Model years: 2003–2005.

The Neon SRT-4 established the other founding extreme of SRT. Where the Viper used a huge naturally aspirated V10 and rear-wheel drive to create supercar drama, the Neon used a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive to deliver serious performance from a relatively inexpensive compact platform.

Period brochure material lists the 2005 model at 230 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. Those figures mattered, but the larger achievement was strategic. The SRT-4 brought factory-engineered turbocharged performance to a high-volume, tuner-oriented audience. It was the evidence that SRT’s expertise could be applied to a compact car that ordinary buyers could actually consider, not just a hand-built halo vehicle.

The Neon SRT-4 also helped establish a pattern that would recur throughout SRT history: the performance division changed the powertrain, chassis tuning, braking capability and supporting hardware to match the vehicle’s new mission. The car’s identity came from the engineering package, not merely from an SRT emblem.

3. Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6: SRT crosses the brand divide

Model years: 2005–2006.

The Crossfire SRT-6 was the first Chrysler-badged vehicle to receive the SRT designation. Its importance is therefore organizational as much as mechanical. During the DaimlerChrysler period, SRT was willing to work across brand and platform boundaries rather than treating performance development as a Dodge-only activity.

The SRT-6 used a supercharged, intercooled V6 producing 330 horsepower. It was offered as both a coupe and a roadster. The chassis received SRT-specific suspension and braking changes, while the wheel and tire package used 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels. Large vented disc brakes were part of the effort to make the Crossfire’s extra power usable repeatedly on the road.

The Crossfire was not a traditional Dodge muscle car, and that is precisely why it belongs in this history. Its supercharged engine, suspension calibration, wheels, tires and brakes served the same broad SRT mission seen in the Viper and Neon: take an existing vehicle and give it a substantially more focused performance identity.

4. Dodge Ram SRT-10: putting a Viper heart in a pickup

Model years: 2004–2006.

The Ram SRT-10 was perhaps the clearest expression of SRT’s willingness to build the unexpected. It took the Viper’s 8.3-liter V10 and installed it in a pickup truck, creating a rear-wheel-drive street machine with 500 horsepower and 525 lb-ft of torque.

Contemporary specifications identify a six-speed manual transmission, a lowered performance-oriented chassis and a rear-wheel-drive layout. The program also required supporting changes to cooling, tires, suspension, bodywork and braking. This was not a conventional work truck with a larger engine. It was engineered as a high-speed performance pickup, and its compromises followed from that goal.

The distinction between the Ram SRT-10’s engine and the ordinary V10 offered in some Ram trucks is important. The SRT-10 used the performance-oriented, Viper-derived V10 configuration. It should not be described simply as the regular Ram V10 with an SRT badge.

In effect, the Ram SRT-10 translated the Viper’s mechanical shock value into a different body type. It showed that SRT could create a coherent performance vehicle even when the underlying platform was designed for utility.

5. Chrysler 300C SRT-8: the HEMI formula becomes usable

Model years: 2005–2010, with later 300 SRT variants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Chrysler 300C SRT-8 introduced a second major technical identity for SRT. It was one of the first applications of Chrysler’s new 6.1-liter HEMI V8, which produced 425 horsepower in its initial use. The same engine and basic performance philosophy soon spread to other Chrysler Group vehicles.

The 300C SRT-8 was significant because it made SRT performance feel relatively conventional and usable. It had four doors, a comfortable cabin and the presence of a large rear-wheel-drive sedan, but underneath was an engine, chassis and brake package intended for much more than quiet commuting.

Compared with the Viper, the 300C SRT-8 was less exotic. Compared with the Neon, it was larger, more powerful and more mature. That combination helped establish SRT as something a buyer could choose for daily transportation without giving up a serious performance identity.

6. Dodge Magnum SRT-8: the performance wagon becomes a statement

Model years: 2006–2008.

The Magnum SRT-8 applied the same 6.1-liter, 425-horsepower HEMI formula to a station-wagon body. Mechanically, it extended the 300C SRT-8’s approach. Culturally, it did something more unusual: it made a high-performance wagon central to the SRT conversation.

The Magnum’s shape suggested cargo space and family usefulness, while its engine, brakes, wheels and visual treatment communicated deliberate excess. That tension was the point. SRT did not insist that a performance vehicle had to be a two-seat sports car or a traditional coupe. The Magnum could carry people and gear while still presenting itself as a serious street machine.

Its place in the lineup also helped define SRT’s design attitude. The engineering changes were important, but so was the willingness to put an extreme powertrain in a body style that conventionally prioritized practicality.

7. Dodge Charger SRT-8: the four-door muscle car takes over

Model years: 2006–2010 for the early SRT-8, followed by later SRT generations.

The Charger SRT-8 extended the 6.1-liter HEMI formula to a four-door muscle sedan. It shared the broad mechanical direction of the 300C and Magnum, but its identity was more overtly tied to Dodge’s muscle-car tradition.

The Charger became especially important because it carried SRT from the first modern HEMI revival into the later horsepower-war period. The platform combined the practicality of a four-door sedan with the aggressive proportions, sound and attitude that buyers increasingly associated with modern Dodge performance.

Later Charger SRT generations added the increasingly powerful 392, Hellcat and related formulas. The 2023 Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye illustrates how far the nameplate had moved from the 2006 SRT-8: the early car established the HEMI-powered template, while later cars turned it into a headline-making supercharged performance range.

8. Dodge Challenger SRT-8: the complete SRT arc in one nameplate

Model years: 2008–2014 for the early SRT-8, followed by SRT Hellcat, Demon, Super Stock, Redeye and related variants.

The reborn Challenger SRT-8 arrived for the 2008 model year with retro styling and the 6.1-liter HEMI. It connected SRT’s modern engineering to Dodge’s historic muscle-car image more directly than any previous vehicle in the lineup.

For 2011, the 392 HEMI reached the Challenger SRT-8. The 2011 392 Inaugural Edition was rated at 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, showing that SRT’s naturally aspirated HEMI development was not simply a holding pattern before supercharging. The 392 delivered a distinct high-output character and became an important bridge between the 6.1-liter cars and the later Hellcat generation.

The 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat then changed the scale of the story, with the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI rated at 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. From there, Dodge used the Challenger platform for increasingly specialized variants, including drag-focused models and the SRT Super Stock. Dodge’s 2023 SRT lineup identified six high-performance Challenger models, illustrating how broad the family had become.

The Challenger is the best single vehicle through which to tell SRT’s entire development: retro revival, naturally aspirated 392 performance, supercharged Hellcat power, drag-oriented derivatives and the final V8-focused “Last Call” period. The later names should still be treated as variants or sub-lines within the Challenger story, not as separate vehicles in a list of eleven.

9. Dodge Caliber SRT-4: a successor with a different character

Model years: 2008–2009.

The Caliber SRT-4 continued SRT’s compact-performance strategy after the Neon, but it did not simply reproduce the Neon SRT-4’s formula. It used a five-door hatchback body and a more powerful turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, giving it a roomier and more versatile format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The change in body style affected the vehicle’s character. The Neon SRT-4 was a relatively direct compact performance sedan aimed strongly at the tuner market. The Caliber SRT-4 was a larger hatchback with a different platform, different proportions and a different balance between practicality and speed.

That makes the Caliber an instructive chapter rather than an uncomplicated successor. The badge and intent continued, but the driving experience and market position were not identical. It demonstrates both the reach and the limits of applying SRT’s turbocharged compact formula across changing product plans.

10. Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8/SRT: the decisive move into SUVs

Model years: 2006 onward across multiple generations.

The Grand Cherokee SRT8 was the strategic turning point that brought SRT engineering into the SUV category. Period Jeep material identifies the 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 as a distinct performance version with SRT8 badging, specialized equipment and performance-oriented exterior hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Later WK2 versions used a 6.4-liter HEMI V8. After the naming change, the vehicle was marketed as the Grand Cherokee SRT rather than SRT8. The change in badge did not mean that the performance mission had ended; it reflected the broader naming direction of the SRT designation.

The Grand Cherokee expanded the definition of a performance vehicle. It combined substantial passenger and cargo utility with all-wheel drive, large brakes, aggressive suspension calibration and a large-displacement V8. SRT no longer meant only a supercar, compact turbo car, sedan, wagon or unusual pickup. It now also meant a premium-capable utility vehicle engineered to behave like a road-going performance machine.

11. Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat: SRT reaches the three-row SUV

Model years: 2021, with a 2023–2026 continuation in the researched U.S. lineup.

The Durango SRT Hellcat is the clearest expression of how far SRT’s original brief expanded. It places the supercharged Hellcat powertrain in a three-row family SUV without abandoning the supporting performance hardware and calibration expected of the badge.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the 2026 model year, Dodge specifications list the SRT Hellcat as an all-wheel-drive model. Its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 produces 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. Dodge quotes a 3.5-second 0-to-60-mph time and up to 8,700 pounds of available towing capacity. Those figures make the Durango unusual even within the Hellcat family: it is not merely a fast SUV, but a vehicle combining extreme acceleration with genuine three-row and towing capability.

Dodge also lists the SRT Hellcat Jailbreak as a customization-focused derivative built around the same 710-horsepower foundation. The Jailbreak name is a variant within the Durango SRT Hellcat story, not a twelfth SRT vehicle.

The Durango also resolves a common misunderstanding about SRT’s modern status. SRT was consolidated back into Dodge after its short period as a separate brand, but it did not vanish from every vehicle. In the researched U.S. 2026 lineup, the Durango SRT Hellcat and Hellcat Jailbreak keep the designation active.

The chronology: from engineering group to performance designation

  1. 1989 to the early 2000s: The Viper program and related performance engineering establish the roots of the organization that would become SRT.
  2. 2003 to 2005: The Viper SRT-10 and Neon SRT-4 create the first recognizable SRT-era pairing: a supercar halo and an accessible turbocharged compact.
  3. 2005 to 2006: The Crossfire SRT-6, Ram SRT-10 and first 6.1-liter HEMI SRT-8 vehicles show SRT expanding across brands, body styles and powertrain types.
  4. 2008 to 2011: The Challenger SRT-8 and 392 HEMI reconnect SRT with a modern retro muscle-car identity.
  5. 2012 to 2014: SRT briefly operates as a separate Chrysler Group performance brand. The Viper is sold as the SRT Viper, while the Grand Cherokee receives SRT branding.
  6. 2014 onward: SRT is consolidated back into Dodge as a performance designation. Charger, Challenger and eventually Durango carry the badge into the Hellcat era.
  7. 2026: Dodge continues to offer the Durango SRT Hellcat and Hellcat Jailbreak in the researched U.S. lineup.

What these eleven vehicles reveal about SRT

1. SRT was an engineering culture before it was a badge

The vehicles differ radically in layout and purpose, but the strongest examples received meaningful changes to powertrain, suspension, braking, cooling, tires, aerodynamics or body structure. The Viper SRT-10 gained chassis rigidity and reduced weight. The Crossfire SRT-6 received SRT-specific suspension, wheels, tires and brakes. The Ram SRT-10 required a complete performance-oriented response to the demands of a Viper-derived V10 in a pickup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why reducing SRT to an appearance package misses the central point. The visual treatment was part of the appeal, but the designation originally signaled a broader engineering brief.

2. SRT developed two technical identities

The first was the Viper’s naturally aspirated V10: large, dramatic and tied to a low-volume halo car. The second was the HEMI formula. The 6.1-liter V8 made 425 horsepower in the 300C and Magnum SRT-8, while the later 6.4-liter 392 expanded the concept across sedans, coupes and SUVs.

The Viper gave SRT emotional and technical authority. The HEMI program made that authority scalable. Without the HEMI-powered 300C, Magnum, Charger, Challenger and Grand Cherokee, SRT might have remained a niche performance group rather than becoming a defining part of Chrysler Group’s product identity.

3. Cross-brand work was essential

A Dodge-only history would omit two important chapters. The Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 showed that the group could work on a non-Dodge sports car during the DaimlerChrysler era. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 showed that the same philosophy could be applied to a premium-capable SUV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ram’s Viper-powered pickup made the cross-brand story even more obvious. SRT’s identity came less from a particular badge family than from the willingness to apply serious performance development to very different products.

4. The meaning of excess changed during the Hellcat era

Early SRT vehicles were often specialty projects: a two-seat supercar, a turbo compact, a supercharged coupe, a V10 pickup or a high-performance wagon. The Hellcat period made excess more mainstream within Dodge’s range. A four-door Charger, a retro Challenger and a three-row Durango could all receive immense power while remaining recognizable as everyday vehicles.

The Durango SRT Hellcat is the logical endpoint of that expansion. It does not resemble the Viper in body style or intended use, but it preserves the same basic idea: pair an unusually serious powertrain with a vehicle that was not originally designed to be a supercar.

5. Nameplates and variants should not be double-counted

SRT-8, SRT Hellcat, SRT Super Stock, Demon, Redeye and Jailbreak are important performance variants, but they belong within the histories of broader nameplates. Counting every one as a separate vehicle would make a title promising eleven vehicles misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same logic applies to the Viper. The 2013–2014 SRT Viper is a later continuation of the Viper SRT-10 lineage, not a separate origin story. A clear SRT history has to distinguish a new vehicle line from a new engine, trim, model generation or marketing name.

Bottom line

SRT’s history is not simply a list of increasingly powerful Dodges. It is the story of a performance-engineering culture testing its ideas on radically different vehicles. The Viper established the halo, the Neon made the mission accessible, the Crossfire and Ram proved the group could work across brands and categories, the 300C/Magnum/Charger/Challenger made HEMI performance scalable, and the Grand Cherokee and Durango turned SRT into an SUV proposition.

From an 8.3-liter V10 supercar in 2003 to a 710-horsepower three-row SUV in the 2026 U.S. lineup, the hardware changed dramatically. The consistent thread was SRT’s willingness to make ordinary vehicle categories perform in extraordinary ways.
