When did Sterling Anderson leave Aurora?
Anderson notified Aurora on May 6, 2025, that he intended to resign from both his executive position and the board. Aurora disclosed the decision in a May 8 Form 8-K.

The separation from Aurora’s management and the separation from its board were therefore not simultaneous. Anderson stopped working as chief product officer one day before his stated start date at GM, while continuing as an Aurora director for nearly three more months.
Why Anderson’s departure mattered
Anderson was not simply an executive recruited from another technology company. Aurora was founded in 2017 by Anderson, Chris Urmson, and Drew Bagnell. Aurora’s filings identify all three as the company’s founders.
He had served as Aurora’s chief product officer from the company’s founding and also held a board seat. Before Aurora, his work included MIT’s Intelligent Co-Pilot and projects associated with Tesla’s Model X and Autopilot programs. His responsibilities at Aurora placed him close to the company’s effort to turn autonomous-driving research into a commercial product.
That made the timing significant: Anderson left as Aurora was moving from development and testing toward regular commercial operations with its autonomous trucking system.
Aurora had just begun driverless freight operations
Aurora said it launched Aurora Driver for Freight in April 2025 and began operating trucks without a driver onboard while hauling customer loads. The company’s later proxy materials described this as the beginning of its driverless freight operations.

During 2025, Aurora said it continued expanding the operating domain for the Aurora Driver to additional routes and conditions in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. It also continued working with original-equipment manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers as it pursued autonomous-trucking commercialization.
Aurora’s 2026 proxy statement also reported that the company recorded zero Aurora-driver-attributed collisions in its 2025 freight operations. That is Aurora’s own reported safety figure, not an independent industry-wide assessment, so it should be understood in that context.

It does not support the stronger claim that he left because the launch failed, because the technology was not ready, or because he disagreed with Aurora’s strategy.
What Aurora said about the resignation
Aurora’s May 2025 filing described Anderson’s move as a resignation, not a termination. The filing also expressly stated that his resignation from the board was not the result of a disagreement with Aurora concerning the company’s operations, policies, or practices. Aurora recorded its appreciation for his contributions.
That statement does not explain every factor behind a senior executive’s career decision. It does, however, mean that reports presenting the departure as a documented board dispute or a rejection of Aurora’s commercial strategy would go beyond the primary evidence currently available.

Anderson’s new role at General Motors
GM announced on May 12, 2025, that Anderson would become its executive vice president of global product and chief product officer. GM said he would report to President Mark Reuss and begin on June 2.
His GM remit is broader in product scope than his position at Aurora. According to GM, Anderson would oversee the end-to-end product lifecycle for the company’s gasoline-powered and electric vehicles, covering:
- Vehicle hardware
- Software
- Services
- User experience
GM said Anderson would work between its Mountain View Tech Center in California and Global Tech Center in Michigan. The company framed the appointment as part of an effort to better integrate software and hardware development, shorten development cycles, and improve the customer experience.
Those were GM’s stated objectives for the appointment. They do not establish that Anderson was hired to lead a particular autonomous-driving program, nor that GM’s announcement represented a specific change in its autonomy strategy.
Did Anderson leave because of Aurora’s driverless-truck launch?
There is no verified evidence that the launch caused his departure. The launch and the resignation occurred close together, but proximity is not proof of causation.

The strongest available evidence is Aurora’s Form 8-K, which gives the resignation dates and says the board departure was not caused by a disagreement over operations, policies, or practices. Neither the filing nor GM’s announcement says that Anderson lost confidence in Aurora, opposed its freight strategy, or left because of a problem with the technology.
It is therefore accurate to describe Anderson’s move as a high-profile leadership transition during Aurora’s shift into commercial driverless trucking. It is not accurate to describe it as proof of an internal conflict, a technology failure, or a weakening of Aurora’s business.

Aurora continued its autonomous-trucking program after Anderson’s employment ended. Its later annual report continued to identify Urmson as co-founder and chief executive officer and described the company as pursuing commercialization of autonomous trucks.
Aurora reported approximately 1,900 employees as of December 31, 2025, including approximately 1,600 in engineering and product. The company’s later proxy materials also described continued freight operations, route expansion, and work with vehicle manufacturers and other technology partners.

Later Aurora disclosures also confirmed the two-stage transition: Anderson was no longer an executive after June 1, 2025, and no longer a director after August 31, 2025. He remained an Aurora shareholder after leaving management and the board.
The bottom line on the transition
Sterling Anderson left Aurora’s executive team on June 1, 2025, and joined GM the following day as its global product chief. He completed his departure from Aurora’s board on August 31.
The move was notable because Anderson helped found Aurora and left soon after the company launched driverless freight operations. But the documented facts stop there. Aurora characterized the decision as a resignation and specifically said the board departure was not caused by a disagreement with the company. Any explanation beyond that—whether about technology readiness, strategy, or internal relations—would require additional evidence.
