History and Mystery of the Honda CX500 Turbo: Why Honda’s Turbo Experiment Was Short-Lived

Honda’s CX500 Turbo combined a liquid-cooled V-twin, fuel injection and an IHI turbocharger. Its delayed boost, sharp power surge and reported costs help explain why the ambitious model had a short run.

The Honda CX500 Turbo was a genuine production motorcycle, not a show-only concept: Honda revealed it in 1980, began production in 1981, and sold it as a 1982 model. Its compact turbocharged V-twin and electronic fuel injection made it a landmark for Honda, but the riding experience—delayed boost followed by a pronounced surge—was difficult to smooth out. Add the high purchase and insurance costs reported by period and retrospective sources, and the mystery of its short life looks less like a hidden defect than a hard engineering and market trade-off.

What was the Honda CX500 Turbo?

The CX500 Turbo was Honda’s first production turbocharged motorcycle, according to Honda’s corporate history. Honda Italia also describes it as the company’s first series-production motorcycle with fuel injection. Those are Honda’s own historical claims; they do not establish that it was the first production turbo motorcycle worldwide.

The dates refer to different milestones. Honda showed the machine at the Cologne show in 1980, its official history says production began the following year, and specialist and museum accounts identify it as a 1982 model. Honda Italia Classic’s archive lists the model under 1981, reflecting the production-era chronology rather than necessarily the retail model year.

It was based on the CX500, but was not simply a standard bike with a turbo attached. The turbo system required dedicated fuel and ignition controls, while the chassis, brakes, suspension equipment and bodywork were also developed for the model.

Why did Honda build a turbo motorcycle?

Turbocharging offered a way to raise power from a relatively compact engine. Honda’s project paired the CX’s liquid-cooled V-twin with forced induction and electronic fuel injection—an ambitious combination at a time when motorcycle manufacturers were exploring how turbochargers might deliver more performance without relying only on larger engines.

Honda Italia’s account says the V-twin’s uneven exhaust pulses made turbo development more difficult than it would have been on a conventional inline-four. The project therefore tested more than whether a turbo could be fitted: it tested whether a motorcycle could manage the resulting power delivery safely and predictably.

How did the CX500 Turbo’s engine and turbo system work?

Engine and official output

Honda Italia Classic lists an 80-degree, liquid-cooled, pushrod V-twin with a displacement of 496.69 cc. Its archive gives output as 82 CV at 8,000 rpm and torque as 8.1 kg-m at 5,000 rpm. CV is metric horsepower; it should not be silently treated as identical to every source’s bhp figure. A specialist history gives 77 bhp, while a museum account recounts Honda’s claim of 82 horsepower. These numbers come from different sources and conventions, so Honda’s stated 82 CV is the clearest figure to use when referring to the manufacturer archive.

IHI turbocharger and electronic controls

Honda engaged IHI to supply a very small turbocharger. Honda Italia gives a 50 mm hot-side wheel and a 48 mm cold-side wheel, a maximum rotational speed of 180,000 rpm, and a stated overpressure target of 1.2 bar. These are figures from Honda Italia’s engineering account, not independently measured road-test results.

The engine management was also unusually involved for a production motorcycle of its era. Honda’s account describes a computerized fuel-injection unit that read engine and air-condition sensors, alongside a separate ignition controller. The injection system also managed cold-start bypass airflow and a reduced-power fallback mode.

Chassis and running gear

Honda’s archive lists a five-speed transmission, shaft drive, tubular steel frame, telescopic front fork, swingarm rear suspension, two front discs and a rear disc. The specialist history additionally identifies Pro-Link rear suspension and TRAC anti-dive equipment, and notes that the fairing, brakes and frame differed substantially from the standard CX500.

What was it like to ride?

The turbo did not deliver its extra power immediately at low engine speed. In Cycle World’s April 1982 road test, the reviewer described boost arriving after sustained throttle around 4,000–5,000 rpm. Before that, the bike felt comparatively subdued; once the turbo spooled, power rose sharply. The test characterized this two-stage delivery as the overriding reason some riders loved the bike and others hated it—a period reviewer’s judgment, not a claim of universal opinion.

Honda’s history likewise notes that turbo lag and abrupt power delivery could affect motorcycle handling. On a car, a sudden rise in power is often managed by the vehicle’s four wheels and greater mass. On a motorcycle, the rider has to respond while balancing, cornering or changing line. The CX500 Turbo’s surge was therefore not just a comfort issue: it made the relationship between throttle input and power less immediate and predictable than a smoother engine would.

Why did the CX500 Turbo disappear?

There is no well-supported evidence here of a single secret defect or one documented decision that explains the model’s short run. The better-supported explanation is a combination of an exciting but abrupt powerband, the challenges of controlling boost on a motorcycle, and reported cost barriers. A specialist history attributes low sales to high retail and insurance costs; the available sources do not provide a primary Honda sales ledger that confirms a precise worldwide total.

The St. Francis Motorcycle Museum reports that 5,400 turbo bikes were sold and estimates that roughly 2,000 survive. Because the museum does not cite a primary Honda production record for those counts, they should be treated as its estimates, not factory-confirmed CX500 Turbo totals.

The CX500 Turbo also did not stand alone: Honda followed it with a larger CX650 Turbo in 1983. That successor suggests Honda treated the first model as part of an ongoing technical experiment, even as the original 500’s particular blend of cost, lag and abrupt boost made turbocharging a difficult formula to sustain.

How did the 1983 CX650 Turbo change the formula?

The specialist history gives the CX650 a 673 cc engine and 97 bhp, compared with the CX500 Turbo’s 496.69 cc engine and Honda archive rating of 82 CV. Those output figures use different source conventions and should not be read as a direct like-for-like measurement. The same specialist account says Honda revised injection control and reduced maximum boost on the 650 to make the transition smoother; it also describes an ABS fairing in place of the CX500 Turbo’s GRP bodywork.

That development is a useful clue to the CX500’s legacy. Honda had made a turbo motorcycle work, but making its power arrive in a way riders could use comfortably was a separate challenge. The 650’s revisions point toward refinement rather than a simple abandonment of the idea.

What is the real mystery of the CX500 Turbo?

The CX500 Turbo is sometimes framed as a machine that vanished for reasons no one can explain. The evidence supports a more ordinary—and more interesting—answer: it was a bold production experiment whose technology worked, but whose delayed, forceful boost complicated the ride, while high purchase and insurance costs reportedly narrowed its appeal. The available accounts offer clues, not a definitive Honda explanation for discontinuation. Its short life was less a hidden scandal than the cost of being early with a difficult engineering idea.
