Hi-Tech Automotive is the South African factory and long-standing manufacturing partner identified by Superformance for its hand-built heritage cars. Superformance says its roots trace to South Africa in 1994, while separate licensing arrangements cover specific programs: Carroll Shelby Licensing Inc. for the MKIII and Safir Spares LLC for the GT40. That does not mean Hi-Tech owns Shelby or GT40 intellectual property.
What Hi-Tech Automotive actually does
Superformance’s company history says Jim Price established the business in South Africa in 1994 and identifies Hi-Tech Automotive as the factory where Superformance vehicles are built. Superformance also describes Hi-Tech as the partner that hand-builds its cars and says Lance Stander purchased Superformance in 2005.

The precise relationship is therefore manufacturing, not ownership of the underlying marques. Hi-Tech is the production facility named by Superformance; the rights to particular names, designs and continuation programs come through separate licensing relationships.
Who builds Superformance cars?
For the Superformance heritage range, the answer given by the manufacturer is Hi-Tech Automotive in South Africa. Superformance describes the cars as hand-built there, and its current model information includes the Cobra, Daytona Coupe, GT40 and Corvette Grand Sport. The company says the Corvette Grand Sport program is licensed by General Motors.

Superformance reports more than 6,500 cars produced globally and a dealer network of more than 20, but its About page does not date those figures. They should be treated as undated, company-reported totals rather than a production count for a particular year.
What “licensed” means for the Shelby and GT40 programs
“Licensed” applies to a specific vehicle program and its named licensor. It is not a blanket statement that every business involved owns the intellectual property.

These serial-number and certificate descriptions are claims published by Superformance and the relevant licensors. They explain what the businesses say their programs authorize; they are not an independent legal ruling on trademark ownership or registration treatment in every country. Details can vary by edition, so buyers should confirm the paperwork supplied with the exact chassis.

A Superformance GT40 is best described as a licensed continuation car, not an original 1960s Ford-built race car. Superformance says the GT40 is built under license from Safir Spares LLC and uses continuation P-series chassis numbers with Certificates of Authenticity. The car can therefore have an authorized GT40 lineage while still being a newly manufactured vehicle.

That distinction matters for provenance, insurance, taxation and road registration. A continuation chassis should not be represented as an original historic competition car, and the registration authority in the buyer’s country may apply its own rules.
How Shelby South Africa fits into the picture
Shelby South Africa is a regional distributor and conversion business, not a synonym for Hi-Tech Automotive. Its heritage page lists the Superformance Shelby Cobra, Shelby Daytona Coupe and Ford GT40, and calls the company the official South African distributor for the Superformance heritage range.

Shelby South Africa says it was founded in 2015 by South African motorsport figure Peter Lindenberg in its About Us page. In a 2026 anniversary article, the company says Lindenberg worked with Jim Price of Hi-Tech Automotive and Djurk Venter to secure the South African Shelby franchise. Those roles are connected, but they are not interchangeable: Hi-Tech is identified as the factory, while Shelby South Africa handles regional distribution and conversions.
The same 2026 article reports that more than 70 Shelby conversions were completed during the company’s first decade. That is Shelby South Africa’s own decade total and is not presented as an independently audited production statistic. Which models are available through the South African heritage range?
Shelby South Africa’s cited heritage listing highlights three Superformance-based vehicles:
- Superformance Shelby Cobra: an authorized Shelby program associated with Carroll Shelby Licensing for eligible editions.
- Superformance Shelby Daytona Coupe: another Shelby heritage model listed by the South African distributor.
- Superformance GT40: the continuation program associated with Safir Spares LLC’s GT40 licensing route.
Superformance’s broader lineup also includes the Corvette Grand Sport, but that model is not one of the three vehicles highlighted on the cited Shelby South Africa heritage page.
The GT40 60th Anniversary series
Superformance’s GT40 60th Anniversary campaign page describes a 66-car GT40 MKII series. It says each is hand-built at the South African factory under Safir GT40 Spares scrutiny and claims that more than two-thirds of the rolling-chassis parts are interchangeable with 1960s originals.

A buyer should ask whether a particular car is one of the 66, which specification it carries, and what chassis-number and certificate documentation accompanies it.
What to verify before buying
- Identify the exact model and edition. Cobra, Daytona Coupe and GT40 programs use different licensing routes and documentation.
- Ask who issued the serial number. Confirm whether the paperwork is a Shelby CSX number, a Safir continuation P-series number, or another identifier.
- Request the certificate and build records. Match chassis, engine and body numbers to the sales documents.
- Separate factory and distributor responsibilities. Confirm whether you are dealing with Hi-Tech Automotive, Superformance, Shelby South Africa or another authorized seller.
- Check local registration rules. The available sources do not establish road-registration requirements, import treatment, pricing or lead times for any specific country.
- Confirm current availability directly. Distributor status, campaign allocations and licensing arrangements can change.
What the published information does not establish
- Hi-Tech Automotive’s current facility address or physical size.
- Per-model production totals or independent output audits.
- Current prices, deposits or build lead times.
- Whether a particular specification meets road-use requirements in a given jurisdiction.
- A universal legal or registration treatment for continuation cars.
For a purchase inquiry, the named routes are Superformance and Shelby South Africa. Ask them to identify the factory-built specification, licensor, chassis-number system, included certificates and local delivery or registration obligations for the exact car.
